Does 2 John 10-11 encourage shunning ex JW's?
by TimothyT ini was reading john's second letter before in my nlt bible and i came accross the scriptures used to back up the act of shunning former jw's.
in my bible it reads totaly contrary to the way the jw's say, so i decided to get out the old nwt bible which gives exactly the same ideas.
here are some of my thoughts:.

Crooklyn... HAHAHAHA!!! Great points everybody. Gives me a lot to think about in considering how absurd these people are.
Ok... lets be honest then... the scripture is right, the governing body are wrong, and their only real interest is power. I think that about sums it up doesnt it. Anyone who was interested in real TRUTH, would look at the context of these scriptures and work out what John is realy saying.
As Billy the ex Bethelite would put it, its the Governing Bodys clear, deliberate and unloving missaplication of scripture that would lead to HIM, disfellowshipping THEM. Good riddance!!! Lets just hope that there are natural loving JWs still in the org who actualy TRY to understand such scriptures and principles. I know several who shun me now, and i pity them for being as misguided sheep.

Punk... you are right. I remember a sister encouraged me a while back to read as many of the dublications (nice word) as i could. I always figured... why cant i just read the bible. Of course they would all say, yeh but you need to know what the bible means. Only the org can tell you that. Errr yeh ok.
Nontheless i do liking reading books about the bible, to get someone elses views on it. I suppose its why i like this forum too, that and many here have helped me a lot.

Broken Promises: Ayyy.... i also enjoyed the articles on practical, Christian qualities. I think such things are good for anyone to study realy, and i dont think i could such how the GB could taint them. When i studied the gospels i came across many verses which kind of condemned the WTS. Its crazy when you read stuff like that and you see it RIGHT there. Makes you wonder why you never sawe it before.
Mindseye: The Mankind Search book was good. I remember reading it when i was young. It made me interested in other religions too. :)
Ding: Thats very true. To do a contextual study would be counterproductive for the WTS. In a way thats sad because it means they arnt interested in the history and context of the bible anymore, but they now are in a situation where they have to cover up and adjust teachings. They have lost the main reason for the bible i think. OOOH... I havnt picked up Galations in a while. May do it soon actualy. Thanks.

Irondork... i did enjoy the Daniel book too. I love history and i enjoyed the way the Daniel book presented it all. I thought then and of definately think now that some of the JWs ideas of it were a little skewed. Perhaps i should do a study of the book of Daniel again and see what bible scholars such as Barnes and Clarke think about those prophecies. That would be interesting.
Cantleave: Yes... my dad often said the same. Why cant we have more verse by verse discussions. Reading the bible in context is good, but the org prefers the topical study approach which picks and mixes scriptures which can lead to bias and loss of context. :(

Yes Dunlap wrote it. My dad loves that book. He said it was special and well written. Im sure Franz had a hand in it too. Probably a good reason to look at it then.
Eclectic: They are some good quotes. Its interesting isnt it that sometimes the society throws in something which condemns itself. We pick up on them straight away. I doubt the average JW does though. :(
Transhuman68: HAHA! You forgot door stop and car booster seat. Lol

Yes, welcome to the forum. Its fab here. You can ask anything you want JW or non JW related and someone will have something to say. There are also lots of current JWs and non JWs here, and also lots of different perspectives from people who have experienced all sorts of things through life. I hope you enjoy it here and find it a useful and practical resource and encouragement like i did.

I was reading John's second letter before in my NLT bible and i came accross the scriptures used to back up the act of shunning former JW's. In my bible it reads totaly contrary to the way the JW's say, so i decided to get out the old NWT bible which gives exactly the same ideas. Here are some of my thoughts:
I think its interesting that John restates the need for true Christian love in v5 and v6 before he starts speaking about the main reason for his letter.
V7 gives us the context. John is warning against deceivers, who dont believe that Jesus is God's son and the saviour of mankind. The original greek word for deciever (planos) clearly refers to someone who is actively teaching that Jesus isn't God's son. It doesnt seem to mean those who passivly dont believe in Jesus. Hey, each to their own. :)
V9 logicaly continues, those pushing ahead of Jesus and not remaining in his teaching (i assume that being that he is the messiah) does not have God. V10 then says that to such ones we should not say a greeting to them. Again the greek word used (chairo) refers to wishing the person prosperity. I suppose John simply did not want Christians to encourage or wish such ones well in their task to decieve others, whilst at the same time showing love to them as reminded in v5 and v6.
I dont know if my thoughts are correct here, but if so, i see no real basis for the JW's practice of shunning former believers. In many cases, ex JW's certainly arent out to actively deceive others and therefore should not be so unlovingly shunned.
Can anyone correct me if im wrong. This is quite an interesting and important set of scriptures in the bible.

Wasnt it dreadful.
Instead of sitting through such bullsh** i spent the time in a nice baptist church and listened to them talking about Jesus Christ and how we can follow in his footsteps. It was MOST encouraging. :)
