For My Dad.

today, the 28 february, is 17 years since my dad died.

every year, on this day, i speak to my jw mum on the telephone, just to say hello mum, i know this isn`t your favourite day.. every year that passes, she tells me that, every morning on this date, when she wakes, she tells herself that today is just another day, there is nothing special about it.. well, today i told her that today was special.

the sun and earth were in the same place, the season was the same.

I remember on another thread that 40 was a bad year for you. If was tough for me as well. My father died in February. A month later my mother found out she had cancer. I found out a few months later I had a medical problem. By the time my birthday came in October, I was not, as they say, "happy camper". It was the toughest year of my life. Well, it is 20 years later and time heals, and life is looking better.

Witness Funeral Services

I wish they could understand how offensive their funeral services are to the outsider. They think they are "giving a witness" when in fact they are giving the most repugnant message possible. To them the perfect delivery should cover the following: is there a soul? is there a hell? are you going to heaven or a paradise earth? how many will go to heaven? Oh, and by the way we have a dead person here.

Am I over reacting? I don't think so.

The Poor JW Children

there are many things that could be changed, and even though i would never go back, i think there are some very basic changes they could make in their child rearing practices, simple changes that would make a big difference in their society.. 1. don't force small children to sit for two hours in a chair.. this was discussed at length on the thread about slapping children at the kingdom hall.. 2. don't bring children to meetings where the subject has to do with adult sexual practices.. 3. don't tell teenagers that they can't ask someone out for a date unless marriage is on their mind.. 4. don't tell them that they are not special, that they have to humble themselves and be like everyone else.. 5. don't tell them they have to get good grades through high school as a reflection of what jehovah has given them and then tell them they can't go to college when they graduate from high school at the top of their class.. 6. don't tell your wordly neighbors that you give your children presents all through the year, but not on their birthday, when they have never seen a special gift wrapped present in their life.. 7. don't expect a shy child to enjoy going from door to door and don't expect an extroverted, lively child to sit still at meetings.. 8. don't tell an inquiring child not to ask questions and don't tell them not to read interesting books.. 9. don't surprised if you don't change your ways that your children will leave you, even though they love you.

Your comments on the social life, or should I say the party life of the brothers and sisters was interesting. In my day we were a pretty sedate bunch.

After high school, I worked for a year. I was pretty frugal. While my buddys were buying nice cars, I was saving my money. I occured to me that going to college with the money I had saved would be more useful than a nice car that would rust out in a few years. I had to talk my mother into it, but I did go to college, and as they say, the rest is history.

By the way, Lurker, it will be interesting to see where those who discouraged you will be ten years from now compared to you. I guess you are the experimental group (N=1) and they are the control group (N= a whole bunch).

I failed to read the title of the thread until after I had posted. When I first read the title, I took it to mean "typical" of JWs, but you are right in that it could have been slanted against women. I also agree with you as I stated above that is generaly more dificult for JW women than it is for nonJW women. I believe that most women feel trapped in their oppression and find it very difficult to get out of it.

Waiting, you wax quite eloquent when you write on this subject. Have you ever thought about writing a book on women's issues and how they are exaserbated by the JW culture? Years ago, I wanted to write a book about the psychology of JWs. I spent about six months on it and generated about 150 of draft material. Unfortunately, I didn't have the emotional stamina to spend another year it would take to bring it to completion. I still draw on it for information I post here from time to time, so it wasn't a total waste. Waiting, thank you again for your incisive omments.

I think it is very difficult for women in general to escape abuse and go to a shelter, seek counseling, etc. I think as you well described, it is doubly difficult for a Witness woman to do so, because they often have no support from their congregation and risk being expelled as well.

I went back and read the previous posts and wouldn't find the word typical associated with the woman's refusal to testify. Did I miss something?

I really do understand your two concerns about your parents. The first, being their reaction when you leave the religion. It broke my mother's heart when I did, but I had no other choice. I simply, couldn't live that life any more. A lot of JWs believe that we leave for perverse reasons. That is simply not true in my case or yours or many others here. We left because we simply couldn't believe it any more. It would have been nice if we could have stayed, but we simply couldn't.

The othe real concern for your parents is their retirement years and how that will play out. You won't know until they get there, and then, like all things in life, you will have to deal with it as best you know how.

Well, no one knows how things will turn out, but the odds are in your favor.

A mother was taking her daughter to her daughter's friend's house. On the way, the daughter asked her mother how old she was. Her mother told her that was a very impolite question to ask an adult. A little later on the trip, the daughter asked how much she weighed and again the mother told her that was a very impolite question to ask. A little more time went by and the daughter asked why her mother and father got a divorce. Again, the mother told her that was not the kind of question to ask an adult. Well, the little girl was bothered and when she got to her friend's house she told her the story. Her friend told her that she could find out all that information on her mother's driver's license, so when she got home she snuck into her mother's purse and found her license. She told her mother. "I know how old you are you're 38." The mother said, "How did you know that?" And I also know, the girl added, that you weigh 135 pounds, and I also know why you got divorced because you got an F in sex.

I also found most of the sisters to be pretty shallow. My wife was an exception. Your comment about "cute and perky" is interesting. Cute and perky lasts for a few years, but intelligence lasts a life time. Well, you might find someone at a JW convention or you might find her at work, or at the local library, but believe me, you will find her.

Not all wordly girls are wordly, and not all Witness girls are pristine.

You didn't get burned last year. You are not burned until you withdraw the money at a loss. Out of the last ten years, there have only been two down years. You have to play for the long term averages. With dollar cost averaging, there is no long term problem. By the way, I don't think you should buy individual stocks. Do the research and find a good mutual fund. Look at the top 100 listed in money magazine, I think in the June or July issue of last year. I was happy to find that my three funds were on the list.
