Question 1. Yes, they are a religion. No, they are not fascists.
Question 2. The GB thinks of both, themselves and others. They are misguided, but not evil in the true sense of the word as you imply.
Question 3. Should you think for yourself - It depends on the person. Some can and want to - some don't want to.

A couple of other thoughts. I think you would find the information about the Amish culture that I just mentioned on another thread to be a useful read.
Also, on the interviewing of women who are JWs, I think it will be very difficult to get them to tell the truth. Protecting their religion, I think, is more important to them than telling you the truth.
I am not trying to give you a hard time. I am just saying that this will be a very difficult barrier for you to overcome.
Anyway, I think your efforts are noble and I wish you well in your endevours.

However, it is very sad to read about the serious problems they have which are the same as the Witness problems. David's entire book is on the internet. On the front page of his web site is a numeration of all the chapters, so you can stop reading and go back later to where you left off. My opinion,
I did not comment here, because I was already on the side of JT, Focus, and Alan F. JT and I have already had much dialogue with Xandit who is from a place I have never seen - a world where you take the beliefs "with a grain of salt." Friend says that the religion can be changed from within - it will never happen. As someone wrote earlier, Xandit and Friend would make good attornys. I agree. No blood in their veins, a cold heart, and belief in the WT written word as gospel, and the only force in a poor Witness life. I feel sorry for anyone who buys their crap.
Friend, perhaps I was too hard on you in my statement about being heartless, but believe me you will never be able to change the WT system. Why don't you get out where you can do more good.

Well, I am not female and I'm not Australian either, but I will give you my answers.
1. What induced me to join? I was raised in it.
2. How do I feel about the religion? I think it is a total crock of....
3. Why did I leave? I read the early books of Russell and Rutherford.
4. How did I cope? I went from a JW workaholic to a secular workaholic. There were no books like Franz's or Penton's and no support groups at that time. My wife and I were on our own....not easy. That was back in 1965.
Obviously, I am not concerned about confidentiality, having been out so long. I hail from Ohio, if that is of any value. I suspect that the answers you get will be the similiar all across the USA, and probably similiar to the answers in Australia.
I would bet that there are others who might answer your questions right here on the board.

All of last year's Awake articles are on line at the official WT website. Some of the Watchtower articles are there too, but they appear to be shortened versions. I only checked out the articles on mental illness and links to earlier articles. Their advice is pretty much of the self help variety with only minor mention of professional intervention as a last resort. The only exception was anorexia where they recmmended immediate medical intervention. I guess even they can recognize that if someone is near death, they better get some help.

From your math, it appears that all of the remnant from the '60's all turned out to be bad seed. How peculiar. Your numbers would really confuse a Witness at the door. I am going to save this in case they show up some day. It has been years since the "plauge of locusts" have hit my door step. In the midwest we have 17 year locusts. Maybe they have modeled themselves after that particular type of locust, here in the neighborhood.
