  1973 versus 2013 (40 years later)... How much confidence have J-Dubs lost in the Slave's "End-Time" estimations?

  back in 1973, when i was just a pre-teen, i remember that meetings in general were chock full of persecution talks, great tribulation talks and armageddon talks.

  so much so, that there was a hightened sense of anticipation that the end was really just a few years away.

  most j-dubs really believed, without any doubt, that freddy's estimation about armageddon in 1975 was a certainty (give or take a few months... not years).

  I was a teenager in the mid 60's and JWs were convinced that specific events wouldn't happen such as the 1976 Olympic Games or that we would not see year 2000. My parents allowed me to leave High School at 16 years old because a good education was valueless since we would be in the new system in a few years. Some were absolutely conviced that their children wouldn't have time to start school...Today we no longer hear them speak with the same certainty...Now they are not serving for a date...at least that what they claim.

  Do you think those at the top realise that it's their fault - suicide as a result of being disfellowshipped?

  i have been stunned to hear of two suicides in our area recently.. this adds to the other 3 that i have known of from the past.. the two recent suicides resulted from 1-the person being gay & hearing a horrific talk at the kingdom hall & 2-the person with problems who was disfelloshipped & then took his life the next week.. it astonished me that jw's in general don't rebel against this sort of thing.

  it's an appalling lack of support which leads people to feel distressed, abandoned & unloved.

  how the witnesses in the locality can just sail on without giving the cruelty of these measures serious though is beyond me.

  Steve2 - I'm glad you mentioned the WT cautioned their elders about people threatening to take their life during a judicial commitee...and there lies the problem. Most people who commit suicide do not "advertize" their intentions and those who do usually don't follow through or are attempting to get help. Others use the threat of suicide as black mail...So how do elders know the person they are about to isolate from everyone he loves not going to end it all?

  that doesn't rarely often and that is the wts.

  executive editors apologizing for the organization's past mistakes and proclamations.

  No, I don't want to reconnect to any JWs and have the elders believe that I am now open to talk to them...I asked them to leave me alone and they have for over 2 years...I like it this way.

  I agree with you when you say suicides cannot be solely attributed to religion. When people are fragile, losing a close friend, getting divorced, losing a job or bullying can bring an individual's despair to an intolerable level when others can deal with the same issues in a more rational way. Still, I surely wouldn't want to be part of a judicial commitee who disfellowshipped someone who takes his life shortly after...There is no way elders can predict how someone will react to such a cruel punishment shunning is...but telling yourself you had no way of knowing is of little comfort when the person is gone.

  Dazed...if your mom seeks other's opionion on Ray Franz, chances are you'll be unfriended a second time! In the eyes of old-timers JWs, Ray Franz was the epitomy of apostates...he was blamed for some of the flaky teachings resulting for apostates infiltrating the WT society...

  I am like Dr. Leo Marvin in "What about Bob"

  a few days ago i watch the old bill murray movie "what about bob" with my family and realized that i'm in the same situation as dr. leo marvin (played by richard dreyfus).

  for those who have never seen this movie, dr. marvin is a psychiatrist who is unable to shake off an obsessed patient who manages to track him down during his family vacation.

  the patient befriends the family who see him like a charming man, when in fact he is driving dr. leo crazy.

  Moshe, nobody wants to lose those they love...and I already took that risk by leaving the cult. I now can be myself because I am no longer under the control of the WT and not because I am free from my family...Because I no longer believe what they believe doesn't change how much I love them. I know that's not how they feel right now...but I have nothing to lose by continuing to love them regardless.

  Hermano, I do...bought her the larger home she really wanted. Travel abroad every year...at least once. She never had to go to work outside of home and we always had more than enough to live. Although they love all I do for and with them, they have a hard time getting over the fact I left the truth. It's like this comment we use to say about some neighbors: they are such nice people, all they are missing is the truth!

  The dinner scene is a classic...last year my wife invited a few friends and they were having their usual JW talk...then one of the brother started talking about this sister who needed to be talked to because she seemed not to know her place in the congregation...that comment annoyed me as much as Bob's mmmmmmmms Mrs. M, mmmmmm...So I asked the brother how was it that he could determine what the sister's place was and what authority he had over her...my family looked at me puzzled...then there was long silence. There was a younger sister there and I was shocked that she wasn't reacting to the chauvinistic comments of a mid twenty overzealous male pioneer...cultic paralysis I guess!
