what shocked me was how nationalistic bethelites were when this happened. I remember being very confused by all the side taking going on at Bethel. I did question whether this was God's organisation because they were acting as if Jehovahs witnesses was an American religion.

okay to get back on track. It looks as though people with narcissistic personality disorder may seek out a niche in the JW religion because they have an opportunity to express and enjoy their disorder. I think this is true.

moe and mrs jones
breaking the cycle is the most productive thing one can do.
edit: my mother was a drama queen too but I do know that she experienced a lot of distress for the harm she inflicted but owing to culture she did not have the opportunity or the means to get help.
edit, edit: Mrs Jones after having read back over my original reply to you I want to apologise for sounding dismissive and for giving the impression that I was trying to stop people talking about this terrible subject. What I was trying to suggest was a way to come to terms with the harm parents cause. But, sometimes, because of the extent of the harm, it isn't possible to do so and one can only reflect on it in horror.

okay I was adding an edit to explain myself whilst you, mrs jones and moe were typing.
here is my edited post in full
I don't understand why you think I am blaming the victim?
edit
Seems to me you think no one should be talking about this on the board. It helps people to talk about their experiences. It helps folks to know that they aren't alone in their experiences. It helps.
I can assure you I was not thinking that.
I am quite interested in how personality disorders are diagnosed. One criterion for a diagnosis of narcissistic personality disorder is that the person inflicting the harm enjoys doing so and does not experience any suffering themselves in infliciting harm. Most mothers who inflict harm on their offspring do experience personal distress when they inflict harm. Very few don't and those who don't would certainly merit being diagnosed as having narcissistic personality disorder.

here is what I said mrs jones
well I've read this thread with interest and the most important thing I'm seeing described are clashes of culture between mothers and their children. These clashes are distressing, no doubt about that, but it is inportant to recognize that many of the mothers described here are simply reflecting the culture in which they were brought up. In a different time and place they would be considered normal. If these clashes of culture between you and your mother are bothering you get some psychotherapy.
I don't believe in any kind of assignment of blame.

Latest research findings: The more believers doubt their own beliefs, the more they proselytize in favor of them .
by AndersonsInfo inon december 10, 2010, appearing in our local newspaper was an article titled, social science palooza, written by columnist, david brooks.
"every day, hundreds of thousands of scholars study human behavior.
every day, a few of their studies are bundled and distributed via e-mail by kevin lewis, who covers the social sciences for the boston globe and national affairs.

Hi Barbara
I think these findings are most true of people whose beliefs are ideologically and/or emotionally based. Both are true of Jehovahs witnesses.

Ok, so there is a gap in my reasoning ... but that's a good thing
by Simon ini was going to post a 'welcome' message for all the new people who may have got a computer for christmas and are making their first forray into the online world.. of course, not many jws are going to be getting a computer or much else for christmas right?.
kinda-strange for me to forget about such a big thing like that eh?!
it's pretty good though to have moved on so that the jw indoctrinated mindset isn't the first thing that springs to mind.. hope you're all having a great christmas and wherever you are in the recovery process that you feel a little bit better today than you did yesterday, more free and relaxed than you did last year and looking forward to your new life in 2011.. there's going to be lots of changes coming for this site hopefully in the next week or so and probably continuing over the next year.

thanks for the further link psac. It is always interesting to me when theologians take evolution on board and then go back to the scriptures and are honest enough to take a new look at their cherished beliefs. John Shelby Spong was another such guy. What they seem to do is confront belief in God as a dilemma and, to me, they seem almost to be atheists when they do so. Murphy also comes accross to me like this. I remember being very unsettled by Spong but I now feel at home about entertaining an atheistic position. For this reason I have come to value CREATIVE IMAGINATION as it enables me to go to a place that used to be occupied by an all good God and still experience the same or even better effects of peace and tranquility yet still be tuned to the dilemma of being a multifaced me.
To me this latter point is a crucial aspect of belief in God. Murphy in his essay does seem to keep the tension of good and bad as existing in God through the passion of Christ. Whereas in my former belief in God I located evil in man and in the creation leaving God to occupy the spot of total goodness. Nowadays it seems to me that if one locates good and bad within God then one is more of an atheist than a believer.
