Wouldn’t be surprised if Simon has to scramble to buy more SQL space after this post. Good lord.

Another note: there are two ways Muslims are guaranteed paradise.
1 - kill or be killed in the name of Allah.
2- emigrate in the name of Allah.
#2 seems glossed over so many times-especially for the purposes of threads like this. For those Muslims that don’t want to kill, no worries. Just move to another country and refuse to integrate. This is exactly what is happening to Europe.
To integrate would mean to accept that whatever religious law you might have now comes second to the laws of the new home country.
I think you said you like the “melting pot” analogy. To be part of the melting pot, you have to accept being in the pot, not replacing it.

The Bible is much like the Quran in that regard.
Yes, those elements are present in the Torah. But herein lies an important difference, in my opinion. The Biblical passages don’t come with prescriptive mandates to push Jewish law above secular law. In other words, there can be a separation of synagogue and state.
But it goes far deeper than that. The violent passages in the Bible are grammatically historical. They read like this: “God told Joshua to <list of things that seem quite immoral>.” It would be quite different if the passage were prescriptive for all worshipers forever: “God told Joshua to <list of horrible things to do>. Likewise so should you do until the entire earth is for Yahweh.”
This type of mandate, valid for all time, for the followers to execute, is not found in the Bible. Ruling is for Muslims only - solidifying a tight bond between mosque and state. The non-Muslims pay a poll tax and submit to second class status, and any complaints gets your head sawed off with a butter knife.
There is a reason why Isis-type Muslims do what they do and then point directly to the Quran and insist they are justified: because the justification is plainly and grammatically there. You don’t have Christian groups pointing to Jesus and claiming a terrotist mandate. It’s apples and... cruise ships.
Note: we haven’t even talked about Mohammad and how he is the perfect and excellent example of conduct, to be imitated by all Muslims.

Islam is not an ethnicity or race.
@recovering:
I have not read the entire thread but I find it hard to believe Simon is trying to convince you that all Muslims are evil. I would be willing to bet you are reaching a bit there.
As with any religion, individual members have different levels of knowledge, enthusiasm, and belief. And no doubt some Muslims cherry pick different parts of the religion to live by while ignoring other parts - as do some Christians, JWs, Jews, etc.
But regardless of what any individual Muslim may or may not do, we can always go back to the religion to find its official standing. That is the pertinent point, IMHO. There is no room within the writings that make up Islam for a separation of mosque and state. There is no room in Islam for a “Draw the prophet” contest. There is no room in Islam for homosexuals.
Some Muslims make room - but they are being good Muslims by being bad Muslims.

Pfft. It only took three posts before it was applied to Trump admin. I haven’t gotten into the show yet. But I’ve heard applications of it by late night talk shows toward Trump. If it’s just a thinly veiled attempt to make an anti-Trump political statement, then I’m not interested.
So honestly - is the show a political statement? Or is it a good story? I’m willing to give it a shot if it’s a good story with decent character developement ... and no glaring internal contradictions (like what Star Wars has become)

Corporate Virtue Signalling At Your Expense
by Simon inthe latest trend seems to be that you can't go to any store without being asked for money.. no, not the money for the things you went in there to purchase, extra money for the store to donate to charity.. yes, that's right, the big-name stores, often making $millions in profits, ask you to give them extra money so that they can give it to charity and get some publicity about how awesome they are so that they'll look good to their customers, like, erm, you.. it seems to have ramped up more in the last year or so and frankly, it pisses me off.
if i want to donate to some cause, i'll give the money straight to them.
i hate that it puts people on the spot to guilt them into donating and imagine some people on a tight budget may give even when they can't really afford it.. often you don't know what the charities really are (it's vague like "to help children") or how the money will be spent or even how much will go on the people it's supposedly to help (charity is a multi $billion industry, some just exist to pay themselves).. so what to do?

I am a bit annoyed at the culture of “corporate social responsibility.” You know, they have to “give back” to the community - as if they are just a bunch of takers.
If a company is making a profit, it is already giving back by its very operation. The profits made are a signal that they are using resources in a beneficial way. People are voluntarily reaching into their pockets and giving them money in exchange for whatever they are producing. It means that they are either moving lower order goods to higher order goods, or the company is providing a service that people find helpful enough that they would support it.
If a company wants to support a charity or cause with its money, that is great. Glad for it. But the idea if a company does not find a pet cause to champion, it makes them socially evil just chaps my ass a bit.
Of course this is different than the situation Simon describes. I agree on that count as well.
