Siegswife--I think that story is terrible. Think about this--that girl wasn't born violent. After reading the story it doesn't take a genius to figure out where the girl learn to deal with things in a violent manner. I'm one of those people who thinks there is a better way to teach kids to deal with things than violence. I don't consider such thinking superior so much as I consider it more enlightened, civilized and achievable by all who are interested in making the effort. Apparently your friend didn't realize this or didn't bother to make the effort. While we cannot know one thing we do know, your friend is producing a young adult who will go into the world with the idea that the way to deal with differences or difficulties is violence. That is where it costs everyone in society. That is the cost to us to for lack of good parenting skills.

It is my firm believe that these OT accounts are written after the fact and are used to justify human barbarity. There is no other acceptable explanation, IMO.

Tierce-

I think you would enjoy the story of Judges 19:15-30. Here we have a guy who follows up on the offer of sacrificing a woman when the crowd demands his visitor. This woman is the visitor's concubine, she is basically raped to death throughout the night, her master finds her dead on the doorstep come morning. He takes her home and cuts her up into twelve pieces and has her body parts distributed throughout the region. Sick shit, eh? I can't believe there are folks who can, with a straight face, insist this is to be considered, without question a part of this book of "enlightenment"--the bible. I can imagine the volumes of gibberish Rex could post in defense of this garbage.

Hey Tina--

Thanks for helping to raise awareness of this epic horror. I saw a documentary on CNN some time ago where a very brave woman went in and took some hidden cameras and--well you should have seen.

You may be able to catch it, I think I saw a blurb where it's going to be on again, maybe tonight. I think it is called Beneath the Veil. Look into it everyone, it is well worth watching. Be warned, it's really awful, what some go through.

Hey everyone--

I've enjoyed reading everyone's thoughts on the matter. AmazingP, it is nice to hear some honesty on the matter from a believer. I'm glad there are some Christians out there who don't necessarily consider all the barbarism in the bible to be holy or enlightened/inspired or even truthful and they're honest enough to admit it. A refreshing change from those who would defend such as God's doing and reasonable to boot. I am not at all surprised to see Chappy have a similar view as you he's always a laid back sort of open-minded believer. You know, an honest sort. Thanks to you both for your views.

***Let's see, first of all, Israel had been told not to do it. At 1Chronicles 21:3 It says that Joab pointed out to David that it was wrong, and it seems that all of Israel knew that because at 1Chronicles 21:6 it states that the tribes of Levi and Benjamin refused to participate because they knew that Joab was right. From this I can only surmise that these people had a choice NOT to participate in the census since they knew that God said not to do it. It sounds like the elders (?) of the tribes had the choice to have their tribe participate or not. I would even venture to guess that individual people could have opted not to be counted.
If you told your kids not to do something, warned them of the consequences and some of them did it anyway, shouldn't those kids received the consequences that they were warned about? If you didn't do what you told them you would do, wouldn't the kids that listened see that there was really no benefit for them to listen to you since you didn't do what you said?

Don't you think death is a little harsh for being counted? Couldn't they have been struck mute or blind or something? Maybe arthritis or premature hair loss...countless lesser, more reasonable punishments for being counted.

While I agree that children should receive consequences if forewarned I can't imagine wielding the threat "..or I'll kill you...". I am more likely to point out "if you do not do this now you won't have time later for that". The consequences of their own choices not the consequence of my anger. The earlier they learn that their choices result in consequences beyond the pleasing of a parent the healthier I say. My 2 cents on the matter.

congress is now reviving a proposal killed last year by senator phil gramm, the texas republican who was then chairman of the senate banking committee.

the bill, introduced by the clinton administration, would give the treasury secretary broad power to bar foreign countries and banks from access to the american financial market unless they cooperated with money-laundering investigations.

it was strongly opposed by the banking industry and mr. gramm.. "i was right then and i am right now" in opposing the bill, mr. gramm said yesterday.

This is an all out lie Rex. I was barely able to drag answers out of you once, you did however dodge the questions repeatedly.

:you contuinue to ignore the research done in written material because you don't like the answer.

Another lie Rex. I didn't ignore the answers that you found (that others wrote, indicating your inability to form your own thoughts/conclusions). I included them under the verses I had to badger you into addressing. I note you do not take issue with my summary of said answers.

:So why do you keep bringing it up, time after time?

It hurts, I know Rex. After dodging all that time and finally, to save face, you post "answers" for "the lurkers"--no doubt thinking you could finally be done with it and move on to more thunderous activity. I thought this post would serve to accomplish several things. One would be to again highlight just what exactly is in the bible and of course the lengths (or should I say depths) that Defenders of the Faith, such as yourself, have to go to to "explain" it all.

Lastly, this latest performance of dodging, finger pointing, baseless accusations and LYING that you have handed in is worthy of recap. It clearly demonstrates who really has to employ dishonesty in order to justify their views and it isn't those who don't believe in biblegod.

I can't help but wonder if a "quote" like this is to plant that subconcious seed of fear. As in when people think a god who demands constant worship is not worthy of worship will end up dead. Of course all those guys that wrote the bible are, hey wait a minute, they are all dead too. Funny how that works.

Hey Seeker--

It pains me too but I must admit that Bush did a fine job last night. I think he said a lot of stuff that Americans needed to hear and I was so relieved we weren't subjected to (and representd by) the standard Deer-Caught-in-the-Headlights look he often employs at important times. That surely would have been disastrous.

I went through and saw all the attacks you endured in the Colin, Gore, Bush (whatever) thread and see here the criticism you faced for saying a word of praise for a President you aren't so fond of.

I for one appreciate your graciousness at enduring such and displaying your fine qualites (keeping a cool head, independent thinking based on facts etc). It was good to see your attacker(s) assume rational mindsets eventually. It's good to have a friend you can always learn from. That's what you are to me--
