I think I first saw it on PZ Myers blog Pharyngula. Well worth saving to your bookmarks but not for anybody who prefers their atheists to be polite and inoffensive.

God is not a good Samaritan
by peacedog ini don't start threads very often, but yesterday i had something of an epiphany as i was doing some work in the yard.
deep in thought, as i usually am when doing mundane tasks, it occurred to me that while jesus encouraged us to be "good samaritans", god himself is not a good samaritan.
in the parable by jesus, a traveler is left beaten and robbed on the side of the road.

The more I read apologies for god the more it reinforces my decision to abandon my faith.
All attempts to reconcile god and suffering are ultimately vacuous.
The world looks exactly as it we would expect it to look if there was no god.
I grieve for suffering but I no longer experience the pointless angst of wondering "why?"
Shit happens!
(very good OP by the way)

Christopher Hitchens to Undergo Cancer Treatment
by XJW4EVR injames white linked to the huffington post article on this matter.
he and hitchens have a debate scheduled in august.
this is sad news indeed.. .

I saw the Al Sharpton debate, I too am stunned at your conclusion, but then it wasn't a conclusion as you cut out half way through.
Hitchin's is often dismissive of his opponents in debate and that does come across as arrogance, so in honour of him I am not even going to comment on EXJW4EVR's waffle.

Problems with Soccer (Football) from an American Standpoint
by RubaDub inso as not to hijack another thread, just a few comments on why we (americans) find that soccer is generally a boring game to watch.. 1. lack of scoring: american football adjusts the rules periodically so that each team averages around 3 touchdowns per game.
basketball added the three-point line to encourage more scoring.
even traditional baseball has tweaked the rules to encourage more scoring.

Don't they already have another official on the sidelines, who is talking to the refs on the field via the headset using technology, cofty? So if that's FIFA's argument I think they are kind of talking out their ass on that one.
<devils advocate> Yes but the principle is that all decisions are made by human judgement in real time the world over. It saves time to have a radio mic between the ref and his assistant but essentially nothing has changed. If you introduce goal-line technology the game is essentially different at the top level</devils advocate>

I still believe the off-sides line should be a fixed line (a la ice hockey) and the ball has to pass the line before offensive players. You can still pass it the length of the field but the player(s) cannot be over the line before the ball.
You are proposing removing a huge part of the tactical skill from the game.

Hitchins is an intelligent, well informed and clear thinking commentator. Many of his observations are devastating to the smug, self-assured religious apologists who dare to debate with him.
I hope he is able to beat his illness.

To play devil's advocate the principle behind FIFA's objection to technology has absolutely nothing to do with anti-american sentiment, actually that claim sounds really odd. It is their belief that exactly the same game should be available everywhere at every level of the game.
It is the most accessible game on earth, a bit of grass (optional in some countries) a ball and a couple of 8 foot x 8 yard goals (or a couple of jumpers if necessary)
I sympathise with their obstinate insistence that it should stay simple and that decisions should be made by a referee. Linesmen are optional and 4th officials are only found in the pro game. Having said that so much is at stake in the highest level of the game it may be time for compromise?
I hate the idea of endless stop-start video-judge calls. Perhaps managers could be allowed 2 or 3 appeals per match as in tennis?
The offside law is just fine as it is. I've been coaching for 15 years, if the game was dumbed down by tampering significantly with offside I would pack in.

by Lady Lee inmy camera got to see her - the back of her.
too many people for me to get through with the wheelchair.
i stood up held my camera in the air and clicked in the direction i hoped she was in.

Yeah I know I grabbed a shot with my mobile phone from back of the crowd. There were a couple of serious looking men in suits just out of shot who looked as if they would "discourage" anybody from getting too close
She is diminutive; that's Philip trailing along behind beside the Lord Lieutenant. She was on her way to say "How do you do" to the Lifeboat crew

My views on the monarchy have changed radically since leaving the borg.
By separating the head of government from head of state It allows us Brits to oppose the government and the Prime Minister with a passion without feeling unpatriotic.
For example if our troops are in a war we disagree with there is a separation from the queen they are fighting for and the government who sent them into the conflict
There are hangers-on around the royal family but nothing like there once was. I have gone from religious to atheist and from republican to royalist in roughly the same time.
