a junior civil servant has embarrassed the uk foreign office with his suggestions for the popes visit to the uk in september.
the foreign office has been forced to issue a public apology after an official document suggested britain should mark the pope's visit this year by asking him to open an abortion clinic, bless a gay marriage and launch a range of benedict-branded condoms.... .
i've got another idea; throw his papal arse in barlinnie prison with a load of rangers fans as a reward for years of covering up child abuse.
I am disgusted at the foreign office inviting him under the present circumstances. We just about still have the right to peaceful protest in the UK. Let's hope he is left in no doubt how much contempt there is for his cult right now.

They will have to leave their toys at home when they come to the UK

The vatican has decided to be very offended indeed over this affair.
Cardinal Renato Martino, the former head of the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace, said: "The British government has invited the Pope as its guest and he should be treated with respect.
"To make a mockery of his beliefs and the beliefs of millions of Catholics not just in Britain but across the world is very offensive indeed."
PZ Myers is sympathetic to the old bastards as expected..
Oh, "very offensive indeed." Merely joking about asking the Pope to defend himself outrages the Vatican…but we're supposed to overlook the effects his lies about birth control, disease, and the treatment of children have had on the world.
Stay home, Ratzi, stay home. Hide in your palace surrounded by your sleazy sycophants, and stuff up your ears when others dare to point out that you are an evil old man running a corrupt establishment.
Lets hope the pope and his cronies take PZ's advice decide to stay out of the UK this summer.

i enjoyed this essay by psychologist valerie tarico.
the born again experience.
i prayed harder and just then i felt like everything i was saying was being sucked into a vacuum.
In my own case there was no intense emotional experience. I did feel a great sense of relief and certainty. I couldn't wait to be at church or house group and to spend time praying, singing praise and studying. Over the following weeks it had a tangible effect on me.
One simple example; a couple of weeks after my "conversion" a female driver smashed into my car through total carelessness. My reaction surprised me, I was completely calm and my only concern was for her welfare. (no she was not young & attractive) I felt a sense of care and empathy with everybody around me.
Nobody can possible argue you out of how you feel. It is real and personal and if anybody doubts it you assume it is because they just don't understand.
Looking back there is not the slightest doubt about the accuracy of the observations in the article above. Leaving the borg was only half of my journey in learning hard lessons about not being influenced by a combination of group dynamics and wishful thinking. Admitting this to myself was harder than leaving my life in the watchtower.
i come from what i consider to be one of the finest cities on earth.
edinburgh, scotland.. i love the place.
every day i drive along narrow roads that tourists flock to in the summertime.. cobbled streets dating back hundreds of years.. my great, great, great, great x4 grandparents have walked the same streets.
They left Scholes with half an acre of space in the box. Man City v Spurs will be a big finish to the season for you.

Hey Jambon I was born in a tenement in Ardmillan Terrace just a few yards from Tynecastle. Greatest city on earth.
where do we go when we die?.
there are many very confusing concepts about this subject.
about where we go when we die, and no one i've found to date has really set forth a satisying answer to this question; so i thought i might just employ some of the knowledge i've gained from my own thirty year study of the bible.. where actually would be the most sensible place to begin when dealing with this subject?
Our consciousness is wiped out temporarily by a bump on the head or an anesthetic. It has no chance of surviving the complete destruction of our brains. Death is the end; live for life before death.
thought i would tell you a story given by a member of the church i attend these days in scotland.
after a discussion about miracles in which i made my point that as being raised as someone who belived in god interacting with those in world with whom he truly loved, i had now come to an understanding that if god is the embodiment of omnipotence and goodness, then surely he would not play the role of a trickster who randomly throws miracles about like a trickster, causing chaos and a lack of understanding of the laws of nature due to this.
but it is the very fact of science and the laws of nature that show miracles to be uncommon, and that is is merely that man fails to understand that an certain event has yet to be explained through our knowledge of the world.
A world with no god would look remarkably like the one we live in.
Many people die of cancer; some would have an inexplicable remission. Many would die in car crashes; some would walk away from violent accidents unscathed. etc etc
There would be no discernible pattern to who had good fortune and those who did not.
