would you be comfortable knowing that your co-workers, neighbors and or friends could find out so much about you, how you thought, felt and believed on so many issues?

could you let others who don't really have a clue as to who you really are, come here and look you up?.

would you consider it a good start for someone who wished to get to know you, to start here?.

Good subject!

I have become more convinced with time that first impressions can be very misleading.

This holds true for an in-person encounter, work-only encounter or on-line encounter.

The old cliche is true "you don't really know someone unless you live with him/her."

Some people who post on JWD or other sites can put on an online persona that is not true reflection of their overall disposition in real life.

Your other subject may well be true: Some who appear "nice" are hiding their evil side.

It takes several years of close association to really be able to say "I KNOW that person" and even then they may surprise you by doing something you did not initially think they would be capable of doing.

Watchtower Publisher Records and Social Security Numbers

around the early 1990's an announcement was made just after the "ministry school" that the society was requesting personal information of all baptised publishers in the kh i was attending.. the attendands passed out blank "service reports" and we were told to write on the back our full name, date of birth and social security number.

i was very uncomfortable about the intrusive nature of their request.

being newly baptised, of course, i did as they asked.

Faithful & Discreet Slave?

i was doing some research on just how we had understood the faithful discreet slave class when we were jw's.

you'll notice it also speaks about the evil slave.

i thought of drunkard rutherford who was president and how he really started beating his fellow slaves.

According to the Watchtower teaching, 144,000 men and WOMEN (including the remaining ones on earth today) collectively make up this "faithful and discreet slave." In theory, they are all equal in status.

In practice, however all the partakers at the memorial who are supposedly scattered in various KHs around the globe DO NOT dispense "spiritual food" at the proper time. They don't take EQUAL turns delivering special messages or writing articles of "new light" in the watchtower.

This task of "preparing food" is only done by a select few and printed after the legal department --and others high up in their heirarchy--- puts their seal of approval on it. Ranking only occurs in Christendom.....NOT!

overall, i felt the film was easy to follow and well presented.. it got a well deserved academy award, but even without that, it's worth watching.. yc.

According to critics, a person who owns a vehicle, throws out waste and garbage that goes into landfills, and uses electricity should just shut up about global warming.

The fact is in North America alone, with very few exception, we ALL in some way depend on cars, we ALL generate waste and we ALL use electricity.

So does that mean as indivudials we can't take some steps to reduce our contribution to global warming? I think not.

CAN YOU IDENTIFY YOUR EMOTIONS accurately???

It's a nature/nurture type of distinction when it comes to emotions.

I think INDOCTRINATION can produce certain learned emotions. That is why there are exit counselors. For some people exiting a cult is a difficult process. They need to get rid of cult learned values and behavior as well as the emotions tied to the indoctrinations they were subjected to over the course of many years.

Nature on the other hand, provides a vast range of emotions. Some are critical to our survival, like tetra pointed out.

If men and women were not biologically attracted to each other and ACTED on this attraction, the human species would cease to exist. If this natural attraction between the sexes were not controlled, there would not be anyone "tempted" to cheat on their spouse who could successfully fight off such temptation.

Most parents act to protect their young when these face eminent danger. There is such thing as natural affection. If this were not the case, we would see abandoned children everywhere. Thankfully the majority of parents love their children.

Terry, I understand your point, however I see definite limitations to your analogy of "computer with virus/ human with emotions."

First of all humans are not computers, a computer cannot feel lust and indignation. To ask a healthy heterosexual man to NOT feel great attraction to a beautiful, sexy female co-worker would be to ask him to stop being human. He has to "control" his emotions to keep from acting on them when he knows it would lead to bad result ( such as a sexual harassment lawsuit) This control is necessary because he cannot get rid of his feeling of attraction to the co-worker (unless he wears blinders at work and that would cause obvious problems to working effectively) but he can work there provided he controls his emotions and makes a determination to deal in a strictly professional manner with the co-worker.

Similarly with a person who rudely cuts in front of you on the freeway. A normal human reaction is to become angry, especially if the other driver deliberately causes you to run your vehicle off the road possibly causing you great physical harm. The natural human reaction to this is to become angry, but failure to control that anger and retaliating in some way will only escalate an already bad situation.

The display of some emotions can be more harmful than others.

For example, road rage has resulted in countless hurt or killed people.

Someone who is happy to see their beloved relative or friend and shouts for joy would not be harmful.

Making a pass a co-worker one finds very attractive could lead to them getting fired with accusations of sexual harassment.

There is clearly a real NEED to CONTROL harmful emotions, since acting on them can do lasting harm.

Crying when someone dies (as avidbiblereader pointed out) is an emotion that Jesus exihibited, but tears in and of themselves are not hurtful.

Clearly, it is lazy thinking that eventually leads some people to act on harmful emotions.

Our values should never be compromised by harmful emotions.

It takes real conscious effort to identify and control harmful emotions.
