New World Translation, is it the best bible translation?
by littlebuddy inmy jw elder friend said to me that the nwt is the best translation of the bible and that scholars have said as much.
is this true and is it the best?
are there scholars who disagree?.

Wikipedia also mentions the positive review that Jason BeDuhn did:
Summary: "... it can be said that the NW emerges as the most accurate of the translations compared...the translators managed to produce works relatively more accurate and less biased than the translations produced by multi-denominational teams, as well as those produced by single individuals." "Jehovah's Witnesses... really sought to re-invent Christianity from scratch... building their system of belief and practice from the raw material of the Bible without predetermining what was to be found there.
Some critics, of course, would say that the results of this practice can be naive. But for Bible translation, at least, it has meant a fresh approach to the text, with far less presumption than that found in may of the Protestant translations."
"...Most of the differences are due to the greater accuracy of the NW as a literal, conservative translation of the original expressions of the New Testament."You can read more about it here: http://acts18910.blogspot.com/2007/05/jehovahs-witnesses-and-new-world.html
Anyone have thoughts on this?

There are other JW apologist here. Posters like Spike and Ernest involve themselves in discussions and debates all the time. Why is it that Reniaa is so strongly disliked? Not because of her opinions, but because of the way she tries to provoke. No one kicked her off of the board. She left of her own accord. Ex-JW posters have left for the same reasons she did; claiming they were being picked on. If you want to play nice and be respectful of others you can make your opinions known, whatver they be. But if you poke someone with a needle, they're going to scream and probably smack you.

Being Brought Up As A Jehovah's Witness---Was It A "BAD" Upbringing?
by minimus ini think that my upbringing made me the person that i am today---for good and bad.
even though i was raised a witness, i don't think that my upbringing was bad.. your thoughts, please..

I feel very stunted now, because I spent my entire youth and early twenties immersed in the org. I was taught to focus on The Truth tm to the exclusion of all else and now I'm left with nothing to fall back on. I have to figure out who I am from scratch.

I have two complaints about being raised a witness: The first is the lack of education and preparation for the future. I was discouraged from going to college. Hell, I didn't even finish high school. I quit to pioneer. I wasn't given the opportunity to learn anything about religion other than from the publications of the WTS. I was taught that I would probably never be an adult in this system, let alone need to prepare for a career, family or retirement.
The second is the dating structure of the org. Starting with the strict policy of no fornication. If I had slept with my ex just once, we never would have married, I wouldn't have gone through a horrible marriage and divorce, and I wouldn't be facing bankruptcy now for his idiocy. If we were allowed to date outside of the religion I could easily have found a good man. There was nothing but the dregs at the bottom of the barrel for sisters like me within the org. And we're just expected to never be loved? To never be intimate with someone?
This isn't just a problem for adults because of the many teenage witnesses who marry and because of the stupid things children are taught about sex and marriage. At least half the witness girls I know wouldn't have sex with their husbands after marriage because sex had been so demonized for them. The other half end up making really stupid sexual choices because they're not allowed to be open and honest with their parents about their relationships and feelings.

highdose, you're my favorite kind of sinner; although I was hoping your confession would include some girl-on-girl action.
just kidding
If we were ever in the same place (unlikely) I would have been one of the people who treated you so badly because I was an uber-witness and thought that everyone else should be. So I would like to apologize to you for being such an ass.
Thanks for sharing your story.

Birthday Celebrations & other shenanigans
by homeschool inwell, here's my latest "thing"...i plan on speaking with my siblings & their mates in the near future.
i have told them that i have questions regarding some doctrines, mainly stuff like birthdays, mother's day, father's day, etc.
my hubby has some questions for them regarding their wacky blood doctrine (but i wont cover that in this thread).

I heard on the History channel once that lipstick originates with prosttiutes rubbing berries on their lips to signal their willingness to perform oral sex to potential customers.
Yes, and eyeshadow and blush are supposed to simulate the way the body naturally flushes during orgasm.
Make-up, nylons and shaving various body parts all came into fashion from prostitutes.

Meandering Thoughts of my Old Life - Regrets
by AllTimeJeff intwo threads popped up today, one on pedophiles and jw's, and another on what keeps us/me coming back here..... i gotta tell you, when i remember that i was once an elder, spouting off the company line, it makes me sick.
when i had to read the defense of jw pedophiles today, i was reminded that i too once spouted a similar line.
i personally observed other elders resign for what i knew to be real differences they had with the gb on how to handle pedophiles.

There was one particular hall where I was always excluded from my peer group. My brother was very popular. I thought I wasn't good enough for them--turns out I was too "good." When my brother told me all the stuff they used to do, it's no wonder they didn't want me around. I never would have let them get away with it. They all would have been up before a JC by the time I was done with them.
I was such a JW Nazi. I wasn't in a position to really hurt anyone. I only ended up hurting myself and being stuck with no friends. And I acted the way I did because I whole-heartedly believed it was the truth and it was important to really LIVE it, not be half-assed. I regret believing it, but I don't regret acting in a way that I thought was Right.

Isn't there something in the Bible about Job observing his children's "days"? Someone else will have to tell you where that is.
Thanks for organizing this info. It's great. Bookmarked.
