Cadellin Gets Confronted by Parents
by Cadellin inwell, i knew it was only a matter of time before my parents confronted me on my "loss of spirituality" (their term).
i love them dearly and would rather cut off an arm than hurt them, so i was hoping (naively) that my so far successful fade might escape their notice.
we live about an hour apart so my lack of theocratic activity would go unnoticed.

Odd Deconstructive Moment in the Dec 2010 Awake
by Cadellin inwhen i saw the article, "more major earthquakes expected" in page 20, my first thought was wtf?
haven't they learned their lesson about predicting increases in earthquakes?
then i read the article, which shies away from any explicit claim that seismic activity is on the increase.

Anyone taken the Metropolitan Museum of Art JW tour, "The Woman and Her Offspring"?
by Cadellin inthese are apparently private tours by jws (pios who do it for a "contribution," i believe), who highlight the "historical evidence" for various bible events or prophecies.
there are a variety of themes, but i had a relative just take one on the woman and the seed/offspring (is "offspring" the new word for jws?).
she thought it was the most amazing thing since sliced bread but i was curious if anyone here has taken one and what their take is....

Update on the Mermaid
by Cadellin ini don't post here that much, though i read posts everyday.
it's mostly because of the ie7 problem (don't use ff that much).
anyway, that's beside the point.

Origin of Life Brochure--Excellent Video re how life may have originated
by Cadellin inhi, folks--i'm not sure if this vid has been posted before but its worth watching for a simple (and likely simplistic) hypothesis on the formation of life.
as many of you know, one of the (numerous) difficulties with the latest wt brochure the origin of life, five questions worth asking is the way it conflates evolution with abiogenesis, then quotes scientists like robert shapiro who say that, for instance, the rna world hypothesis won't work because of thus and such.
then, the wt (somewhat dishonestly) uses those words as "proof" that any kind of naturalistic origin is impossible (instead of revealing what shapiro, in this case, is really saying--that while the rna world hypothesis has problems, there are other hypotheses that overcome those problems).. at any rate, this is worth watching, both for the easy to understand explanation of one possible hypothesis from a harvard scientist and for the cool way the text is calibrated with the final movement of beethoven's 9th symphony.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yojsflhx7ts.

"The Science of Why We Don't Believe in Science"--and why JWs resist the truth about the "Truth"
by Cadellin inthis recent mother jones article is pretty illuminating as to how defense mechanisms kick in when cherished beliefs are threatened by new information.
all the responses discussed--discrediting the source, denying the validity of the evidence, etc.--are, no surprise, exactly the strategy employed in wt publications discussing biblical criticism, evolution and other contradictions to the wt worldview.
what i found interesting was that such emotionally-driven responses feel like rational responses to the individual because the emotion to preserve belief systems kicks in before the analytic response.

Where's Cadellin?
by Cadellin inokay, i was just thinking about that lawn ornament gnome that ends up having its picture taken in all these exotic places and i realized that my poster name is kinda like that.
in how many exotic, far flung places does my poster name appear on someone's computer when he or she checks into jwn to see the latest and thinks to him/herself, "oh, look, cadellin posted less than a minute ago!
tell me where "cadellin the name" is right now... .
