Advice on how to shed your worldly friends.
by iknowall558 inalana christinei have a question for you guys out there who have enough knowledge about my situatuion to inform on me as much as you can.
i'm living in the dorms at college right now, yes it's not the best situation for me.
i made a few friends when i arrived, but they weren't the best people even though some say they are religious, ...(they've been baptised but they don't show it).

I think you're right iknowall. It is against probably all reasonable people's personalities. I found it very uncomfortable constantly rebuffing offers of friendship or opportunities to socialise with nice people simply because a) they weren't witnesses and b) my dance card was full of stupid meetings.

I don't think it is a red-herring as that would imply the remark wasn't relevant - which it clearly is, or intended to misdirect the conversation which it doesn't - it might broaden it somewhat though. I merely made the observation that the type of behaviour criticised is common to many fundamentalist religions and beliefs. I think it is a very sad phenomena but a natural consequence of the belief system. I don't think I said that makes it OK.
I don't see any problem with the remark I made. If you don't like it ignore it. Jeesh.
I know this is JWN thank you I can read.

This is not a phenomena peculiar to JWs surely? It seems to me to be quite common in other faiths where the believers are strict or orthodox such as certain branches of Judaism and Islam?

Why is it so hard for Ex-JWs to make that "final step" and give up Christianity?
by sabastious ini'm not sure if it's just denial on a lot of people's part, but the reason the jws doctrine is so wacky and controlling is because they are among the few religions that really try to follow the bible!.
the bible is the culprit here in actuality, but even after someone has "wizened up" to the misguided teachings of jehovah's witnesses they still hold the bible as inspired word of god.. why don't you believe that the governing body was chosen as the faithful and discreet slave in 1918?
because the only real evidence to that fact is that they say so.

It seems to me there is plenty of historical detail in the tales of Robin Hood or King Arthur but that doesn't mean they actually existed or if they did, that they were anything like what has been written about them. One could argue that the gospels were contemporaneous, however one might also ask what happened to all the other contemporaneous accounts that didn't make the Bible? Don't most religions have some 'book' that was written by eye witnesses and/or received directly from God? As far as the books omitted from the Bible - it looks suspiciously like they didn't fit the political agenda of the time and somehow 'God' influenced the early Church to have them excluded.

Judical Committee- FUBAR decisions
by Think About It ini had posted this as part of another thread, but thought it might make a good separate thread.
here's a jc fubar decision that i experienced.. i dealt with a brother who threatened to kill his family, my family, and then himself.
this guys' secret sins were becoming manifest and as an elder some things came to my attention, including wife abuse and according to her, allegations of possible misconduct with the young daughter.

The elders are just people. A cross-section of society. They are as capable of any act as any other member of society. Saying they wouldn't do such a thing is like saying catholic priest wouldn't molest a child be because of his office.
