Is the LAW still binding?!?!
by EndofMysteries inthis is kinda scary, for those who believe in the bible, first jesus said that he wasn't abolishing just fulfilling the law.
the penalty of sin is death, so he covers that.
many take that as most things are okay then.

Dedication of Kingdumb Hall?
by NikL inso my wife who is an active sister got an "invite" to the dedication of the new hall in our town.. apparently it's a big deal 'cuz some big whig from krooklyn is coming to deliver a talk, yada yada yada.. my question, why spend the bucks to fly some old geezer out to the west coast for a building dedication?
is it not officially a kingdumb hall without his coming and having a big ceremony?.
just curious about your thoughts..

Just a thought - do you live somewhere particularly nice to visit? :) - maybe he has family nearby and it's a good excuse for an expenses-pad trip?

How is magisterium different from Governing Body?????
by Terry inlet me introduce you to a term used in the roman catholic church you may not be familiar with: governing body.
in the roman catholic church the word "magisterium" refers to the teaching authority of the church.
this authority is understood to be embodied in the episcopacy, which is the aggregation of the current bishops of the church, led by the bishop of rome (the pope), who has authority over the bishops, individually and as a body, as well as over each and every catholic directly.

The only reason the Jehovah's Witnesses have not executed their heretics is simply because they don't have the power to do so. They certainly have the desire. All they need, in practical terms, is some sovereign territory in which they are unmolested by any other State powers and they will carry out whatever they see fit .
It is hypothetical of course, but it wouldn't surprise me at all and the same for a number of other religious denominations.
I personally was told by my Judicial Committee that, to quote exactly, "If you were in Israel you would be stoned".
Sounds like a good reason to visit Israel I didnt realise they were so liberal about drugs.

I think the comparison with the WTS and the catholics church is unfair. I mean the WTS has burned people at the stake (yet).

I was brought before a JC for wanking
I suppose it depends where you were doing it lol - how did they find out?
Someone earlier mentioned what Jesus would have done - I may be wrong here, if so forgive me, but didn't someone say they had to bury their Father before they followed Jesus to be told "Let the dead bury their dead" - this doesn't sound particularly sympathetic to me.
@Magwitch - I was saddened to hear your experience regarding your brother. The response of those supposedly responsible for caring for others was beneath contempt.

why do you feel a compulsive need to quote scriptures in all your posts?
were you once a bible-thumping jw or are you just a born-again bible thumper who never was a jw and just happens to dislike jws?.

Gromit, of course my opinion is that the bible is relevant for all topics! IMHO it is thoroughly modern and speaks into any situation
I am sure that is your sincere opinion. If however I felt the Bible (or any other topic for that matter) was irrelevant and disgusted me and I mentioned my opinion at length on every thread or everytime someone mentioned the book, I would consider myself to be inconsiderate of others. Your sincere belief doesn't mean it is therefore ok to push this belief constantly does it? If it does I see a worrying precedent being set. There is a time to remain silent and a time to speak no?

I think the WTS had a good deal to do with it but it isn't the only thing that turns me off. Evangelical, born-again types pushing their agenda do too. As for the Bible you are entitled to your own view, as is everyone else. All I would say is that although personally I think it is of very little value, I don't try to convince others of that on a regular basis whether they are asking for it or not and I would ask you to grant a reciprocal courtesy by regulating how much of it I have to read through on threads where the Bible isn't relevant. Naturally there is a degree of personal opinion about which threads may or may not be relevant but I would suggest that every thread you post on definitely exceeds that. I'd cut the volume back a bit too - it isn't any more convincing for its weight :)
Whilst I recognise that many on here have had religious or spiritual experiences which have been signficant, others haven't and I find preaching and references to the Bible tedious and dull. All I am asking is for some moderation in their use or if you must let yourself go do it in a place I can avoid (ie any thread that has the word Jesus, Bible, Scripture would probably cover it for me - but that's only my own perspective which I know many do not share).
I didn't find your initial response at all rude so there was no need to apologise to me. Thank you anyway.
