I mentioned to an elder/friend the other day that it occurred to me that there really doesan't seem to be any scriptural precedent or mandate for the tradition of praying before we eat. I said that Jesus blessed the loaves and fishes when he performed that miracle, and he blessed the wine and bread at the last supper, but I couldn't think of any other example of it. I also suggested that the tradition of praying before eating was probably rooted in giving thanks to the various gods of nature and the perception og God as being involved in the outcome of the harvest, and that, by that way of looking at it, we probably shouldn't pray before eating....silence.

I received an email from Ray Franz
by Out at Last! ini have read on this site that if you write to ray, he will reply.
i was skeptical about this, so i wrote him about how much i appreciated reading the book crisis of conscience and thanked him for his time and effort in writing and documenting his experiences in bethel.
after a few weeks with no reply, i thought that i would never get one.

that's a whole lot better than the response to the last TWO letters I have written to the Christian Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses. My letters were literate, polite and concise enough to recognise that a response was called for...but no. Then two weeks ago the Watchtower study covers points on good manners, including how RUDE it is to ignore somebody! Even some of the local elders have expressed surprise at the subtle "dissing" that I'm getting!

Out of Left Field...Strange things you were told by elders
by FollowerOfSet injust curious if the crazy was limited to my town or not.. i remember and elder, during a talk about everyone being resurrected that it included all the babies that had miscarried or were aborted, because the big j knew what their hearts were.
after the meeting, he was telling a couple of us how it also disturbed him that his wife would have to carry someone elses babies and he would be raising someone elses children.. another elder said that we would colonize other planets, and that since the bible never said the big j didn't make other inhabited worlds that there was a whole universe of planets to colonize after armageddon.. anyone else hear crazy crap like this?.

When I was a MS the elder over the attendants told us that when we were counting the attendance for the meetings, we should not count disfellowshipped people who were there because they are "non-people." I questioned it and was informed that we should, indeed, count ALL in attendance. Can you imagine how self-righteous somebody like that is?!!

well, I see that I have an avatar now. Amazing how things change in the blink of an eye! (though it isn't the avatar that I might have chosen for myself)
peace to you my friendly porpoise-man. Have you seen the film "The Cove?" dark, very dark for the likes of you...

Ever Heard Of Someone Being Disfellowshipped For Talking To A DFed Person?
by Quillsky ini haven't.. i propose that a shift, a change, begins here, spearheaded by those who are still "in".
what's the worst thing the organization could do to you?.
show some love to the next vulnerable disfellowshipped person you meet and speak to them, show them some humanity, some understanding.. if you're disfellowshipped yourself write an email today to someone you love who is not "permitted" to speak to you.. report back on here if it makes some kind of difference..

during a dark spell when my wife was dissfellowshipped, only a few spoke with her. Now, in retrospect, she loves and respects those who" broke rank" and did the loving thing. Unfortunately, my wife is now uber-righteous and the message didn't sink in as deeply as I might have hoped.

Anyhow, I wanted to ask whether anybody else ever took a tool to a kingdom hall workday and had it missing when the day is over. Or a serving utensil or dish to a get-together and it turns up missing. It seems that many witnesses feel that life owes them a favor. It pisses me off.

The phrase "The Truth"
by lepermessiah inso, i am curious..... how many of you have a hard time getting that phrase out of your vocabulary?.
i have been conscienciously trying not to use it at all, so now when i am in a conversation with a jw, its amazing how often they use that phrase.
i look back and wonder "god, did i say that that often?
