Has anyone out here read Thomas Paine's "Age of Reason"?
by Captain Schmideo2 ini wish i had read this back when i was 18. it's an amazing take down of religious beliefs, the bible, and religion in general.
) a "reason"-able manner.take this quote, from near the beginning:.
when also i am told that a woman, called the virgin mary, said, or gave out, that she was with child without any cohabitation with a man, and that her betrothed husband, joseph, said that an angel told him so, i have a right to believe them or not: such a circumstance required a much stronger evidence than their bare word for it: but we have not even this; for neither joseph nor mary wrote any such matter themselves.

I read her book and I couldn't put it down, the similarities to the JW life regarding how the church controls and judges the followers is incredible. I too recommend the book. It also shows that once you see the lies of the church and realize that you've been following a bullshit cult, you still try to justify that your church life wasn't a total waste.
I went through the same feelings, I give her a couple more years and then she will realize that the cult was absolutely a total waste, just as I realized it eventually with the Watchtower.

Why start preaching work in 1876? Something to ask JW's who are still in
by fedup inwe learn from the bible that the characters that preached doomsday messages, such as lot, noah, etc all got to see the result of the message they preached, we studied that the final judgement from god was seen by the preacher as well as the people that heard and ignored the message.
my point is this, it would have been ridiculous for noah to start preaching to people, put the fear of god in all the listeners that the flood is coming, build the ark and then as a result, nothing happens to them.
even if the flood would have happened later, let's say 50 years after noah and all the people that heard him have died from natural causes.

Noah and the others would have lost all credibility, as well as God if the message wasn't fulfilled. Not to mention that God could not hold anyone accountable if the end of the system of things keeps getting postponed time after time.
How can God hold any of us accountable for leaving the Watchtower and calling out bullshit?

Even if the flood would have happened later, let's say 50 years after Noah and all the people that heard him have died from natural causes. There would have been NO point for Noah to have received the command from God to preach at that time, if no one would have lived to see it the flood.
God would have simply waited to start the preaching work at a later time so that the ones hearing the message would also get to see the fulfillment.
I think the same should apply today, why start preaching in the 1870's, scare all those people into obedience and then not one of them see the end? All those people, perhaps in the millions are all dead, the ones that preached and the ones that heard and ignored, all dead from natural causes. If God supported the JW's, wouldn't he have acted while they were still alive, like the bible examples we studied?
Just saying....

Any thought behind your " Avatar"
by The Rebel ini think that's the correct phrase?
anyway when i first came here, that little picture that "the rebel" hides behind, was a self portrait of a very sad man, who simply had too much knowledge.
now i feel after 7 months here, i should repaint that " avetor" give some happiness to the eyes, and a contented smile to the lips.. in short my " avetor" was a self portrait of a man with too much knowledge.

Another generation....
by joey jojo init has been 21 years since the 1995 article that pretty much buried the idea of the '1914 generation'.. remember those guys?
the ones born in 1914 that would still be alive when the end of the system arrived.. i'm glad i'm old enough to remember going from door to door, preaching this belief.
the reason i say that is because i have a lot of 'still in' jw friends and family.

I lived through the 1975 lie. I was never supposed to attend high school. I was turning 12 in 1975, I was sure the end was coming. Too young and had no say on getting out of the LIE at that time.
So, I stayed in, regular pioneered in the 80's, served as an elder for many years, taught all my studies that the generation of 1914 would see the end and that the faithful would live forever in paradise, without ever having to die.
Left in the mid 90's, I couldn't take the BS no more. The false generation teaching was just TOO BIG of a LIE, besides a whole bunch of other stuff I won't list now.
Still have family that are active. A few weeks ago I met with a sibling that's still inside, I had to share some amazing news in my life and said, "while the WT figures out which generation will see the end, I'm going to be a grandfather in August."
After congratulating me, all he could say is, "don't worry, we're really close now."
