(CBS) A weekly commentary by CBS News Correspondent Andy Rooney:
Do you buy this...evil is a gene thing?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Last week, I read where scientists think the human ability to use language comes from a gene we have that animals don't have.
I don't care whether they put genes in dogs that enable them to speak or not, but with all the engineering work they're doing on the human genome, I wish they'd find a way to make humans without the genes that make some people evil or dishonest.
If evil were eliminated, there wouldn't be any terrorists. We wouldn't be bombing the Taliban. We wouldn't need metal detectors at airports.
It would be great if they could eliminate the dishonest gene.
If everyone were honest, we wouldn't have to lock the doors every time we leave home.
We wouldn't have those dumb little locks on our windows.
Everyone who comes into this CBS building has to pass through security.
I unlock the outside door of my office..then the inside door.
Some people keep their desk drawers locked.
There are stores that sell nothing but locks. There are more locks than there are thieves.
Store owners pull down iron gates when they close up.
There are iron bars on windows.
One of the problems with having a bicycle in the city is finding something to chain it to.
If we were all honest, we wouldn't spend so much time looking for the keys to our cars because cars wouldn't have keys for the doors or the ignition.
A million and a half cars were stolen last year. So we spend billions on car theft insurance.
Banks spend millions building vaults where they pretend our money is safe. If they're going to steal it, bankers don't take it out of here.
If science could make human beings better by tinkering with our genes, we would have saved $40 billion dollars last year not having 1,578 prisons.
We pay an average of $60,000 a year to keep each one of the two million criminals locked inside our prisons.
Every community has its own police force. They cost us $50 billion. New York City alone has 72,000 cops. That's more cops than some cities have people.
Stores hire their own police force to cut down on shoplifting.
The amount white collar thieves steal makes the cost of stolen cars look like peanuts. No one knows how much that is.
If science learns how to control our genes, they could make us so nice that no one would ever steal or commit an act of terrorism again. Everyone would tell the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth about everything.
Or do you think that's going too far?

when i was a jw - many moons ago, i hung around the 'sound department' at assemblies.. they finally put me to work - and let me do things like string wire for speakers, install speakers, etc.. i eventually learned how to adjust the amplifiers for proper volume, too.. good experience and training, that i don't use to this day.. anyway - i also was allowed to adjust the microphones for the 'speaker' who would be giving the next talk.. this usually involved following the feller out to the podium, and raising, or lowering the microphone to the proper height fer picking up the words from the fellers' mouth.. some required very little adjustment, whilst others required major raising - or lowering.. this one time, i recall going out there, and they had used a new microphone stand - one that had a ring, or collar arrangement that you just squeezed, or rotated and lifted, to move the microphone up or down, as opposed to the older type that required one to unscrew a locking collar, and then raise or lower the microphone.. i had not tested this previously - and only seen others work it, but it looked easy enough.. so, i follow this 'big-wig' out there, stand there, grab the upper section of the microphone stand with one hand, and then with the other i am attempting to <grunt> <grunt> get it... to ... release.. it wouldn't budge!!!
i was there, for what seemed like an eternity, trying to work this thing, then finally reached up and adjusted the horizontal arm - in a vain attempt to adjust the mic (it also refused to cooperate, and i think i only adjusted the microphone a total of 1/8").. the 'big-wig' speaker musta noticed my total and complete embarrassment (i usually turned beet-red in the face), and nodded that it was adjusted properly - so he could git on with his part.. i skeedadled off that stage - and made a mental note to figure out how to adjust that new type of microphone stand - later..
sheesh!!!
That is so funny!!! I would love to hear simular stories. The closes thing to embarrassing myself was when my friend and I would get the giggles. We probably would have rolled on the floor laughing if we had seen your antics.
.
my friend was swiddling with his car when he noticed a group of jws going door to door, one of them (a lady) approached him and said they wanted to interest him in the bible etc etc.. he said that jesus christ was the head of his household so he couldn't accept wt publications.. he also said u should pratise your faith or something similiar.. he also made an interesting observation, all the jws were carrying laptop computers!.
the idea, being they could beam images onto your living room wall or insert a cd rom into the laptop to show u things.. my friend believes they r carrying out a test run using laptops in their ministry.. is he right?.
Thats a scary thought...the jw are becoming high tech. Next time one comes to my house...when he fires up his laptop (when he is not looking) I will pull up the freeminds.org. site. Maybe we can deprogram these poor silly souls.
"i will step over your dead body at armageddon".
when i was at their house with my children and a jw called and commented on the background noise..."ive got some friends here".
not daughter/grandchildren but friends!.
That is sooooooo wrong!!! My heart goes out to you!! Hope everthing is alright with you now.Feel free to e-mail me ...im a great listner.

Sunrise reviews law on soliciting door to door

SUNRISE Doorstep preachers may soon be able to go through neighborhoods in this city without stopping by City Hall for a permit.
In an attempt to comply with a June 17 ruling from the U.S. Supreme Court, City Attorney Jeff Olson has asked commissioners to change the city's law governing door-to-door soliciting. Currently, anyone who wants to sell products or raise money for a charity, including a religious one, must get a permit from Sunrise's code enforcement division.
But the recent court ruling said, "cities cannot restrict persons engaged in door-to-door advocacy," Olson wrote in a memo to city commissioners. The ruling stemmed from a lawsuit filed by members of the Jehovah's Witnesses against the village of Stratton, Ohio, where officials had a rule similar to the one in Sunrise requiring permits of solicitors.
Under Olson's proposal, those in the business world must still identify themselves to city officials and pay a $50 permit fee before they can sell door to door. But "charitable solicitation" has been removed from the law entirely.
Commissioners passed the permitting law several years ago, Mayor Steven Feren said.
"People were complaining about salespeople, vendors, religious proselytizing -- all sorts of things," he said. "Our concern was mostly a combination of privacy and security."
Commissioners will decide whether to amend the law during a public meeting at 6:30 tonight in City Hall, 10770 W. Oakland Park Blvd. Because of the Supreme Court ruling, the issue is unlikely to stir debate, one commissioner said.
"We can't have an ordinance that conflicts with law," Commissioner Sheila Alu said.
