Russ Kurzen was the very unofficial historian/racanteur of Bethel.
One of his memorable stories was the naming of Columbia Heights.
It dates back to the pre-revolutionary war period before the name "America" was settled upon. Another candidate was "Columbia" (America from Amerigo Vespucci, Columbia from that other explorer, Columbus). The Founding Fathers were considering the Brooklyn Heights area as the seat of their nascent government. The proximity to shipping lanes was a big advantage, however the vulnerability to attack from the British was a big concern. What became Washington, D.C. had the advantage of access to shipping lanes and protection by the geography of Chesapeake Bay.
Just as "District of Columbia" came out of this period, so did the street name, "Columbia Heights."
Russ's story may or may not have been true, however it is entertaining.
I'll save his stories comparing Charles Taze Russell with D.W. Griffith and how Jehovah provided choice properties in Brooklyn Heights for another time.
Here's to word-of-mouth history, Watchtower-style.

How to email JWs at the Brooklyn Bethel?
by ABibleStudent indoes any one know how to send emails to jws in the brooklyn behel or else where in the wtbts organization?
is the email address format [email protected]?
in this day of technology it would be very hard to believe that the wtbts doesn't use email to communicate with elders, cos, dos, branch, and bethels.

Regardless of how ineffective the door-to-door work is, it's mere existence is the means to motivate the congregation publishers to pick up their standing literature order, once a week. The publishers then contribute for the literature they take away from the literature counter. It doesn't matter whether the literature ends up in the publishers' closets or in landfill, the Society receives their contributions monthly from each congregation. This model, which dates back to the days of Judge Rutherford has been the backbone of organization's survival. So long as the contributions keep coming in, the model will not change. The expense and re-tooling involved in a more up-to-date and competitive method of communication would only be considered if the contributions dropped below an acceptable level.
Another factor is the message itself. As the message has become less clear, less defined and more contradictory over time, the expense and effort of effectively communicating it may not be worth it to the GB.

How were Rutherford's Cadillacs purchased?
by InterestedOne ini mentioned rutherford's cadillacs to my study conductor, and he said maybe rutherford was able to purchase them because he was independently wealthy.
were they purchased from his own personal wealth or with the wt funds?.

My guess is that most of the money for luxuries donated to JFR came from the bank account of William P. Heath, Jr. If I recall correctly, Bill's name is on the deed to Beth Shan. Bonnie (nee Boyd) and Bill Heath were JFR's traveling companions on a number of his trips abroad. Again, my guess is that they picked up the tab for these trips.

Man in Black/Expanded-Mind,
I believe Keith's last name is spelled Milkovich. He was serving as a CO when I met him. He was a good guitar player and we used him on some recording sessions in Patterson. We used to call each other on Sunday nights when he was finished with his assignment for the week. We would each be sipping martinis and talking about jazz. We exchanged some of our favorite CDs. I really liked Keith and Mary. Last I heard he was a CO in the Chicago area because he needed to be close to his mother who was ill.

In some respects yes, but in some respects, no. The elimination of all those clunkers from the old book was certainly an improvement. To me, with a few exceptions, the new songs are laborious, not memorable and not as easy to sing as they should be.
