i just wanted share that i am graduating from columbia university next week with an undergraduate degree in sociology at the age of 39. see, it's never too late, for anyone out there considering attending college.. my partner and around 10 of my closest friends will be there to cheer me on, which is overshadowing any disappointment that my family will not be there, or as of today, yet to acknowledge this accomplishment that means so much to me (i sent grad announcements a few weeks ago along with an invite).
in all honestly, they live across the country so it is an expensive trip.. anyway, despite the student loans, hard work and sacrifices, it has been well worth it.
i remember back in h.s in the late 1980s, i begged my parents to let me attend college, but of course, the end was coming and it was a waste of time.
Congrats dude! I am working on my master's degree as we speak. It's a long row to hoe some days. I encourage everyone to go 'back to school' if they feel they were denied an education as a Dub.

A good day indeed! Slowly but surely the courts are overturning hate based legislation. California has 36 million people which is a huge win. Add in Mass, with a population of 6.5 million almost 15% of the US population live in states with gay marriage. Add in the civil union laws of New Jersey at 8.5 million people, Vermont with 625,000 people, Connecticut with 3.4 million, and New Hampshire 1.3 million, and almost 57 million Americans (19%) have same sex marriage / civil union rights.
im thinking about my mother today.
shes been in the truth for over 30 years now baptized in her mid 20s.
she had been faithful the whole time despite being married to a severe alcoholic (my father only studied) for 27 years.
Both of my parents stopped being JWs after they saw how I was treated when the elders were being abusive towards me and being gay. It was the straw that broke the camel's back. After I left they left the JWs about a year after I stopped. My sister also stopped soon after they did. Now, none of my immediate family members are JWs. My coming out as gay was truly a blessing for everyone. Before, our family was very distant and argued all the time. Now my dad is almost my best friend. We only fight now once in a blue moon, and they support me 100% in my life, my boyfriend, and my education pursuit.

My boyfriend / partner belongs here too. He is 'Male Formed'. He's been traveling alot for his work so hasn't had much time to post here at JWD. The few days a month he is home, we usually spend alone and disconnect from the rest of the world.

they don't "need" to increase priced due to demand - they just can so they do.
when prices are at record highs and profits are at record highs....time to tax them for windfall profits i think .
Why have a windfall tax? Who gets to decide how much is 'too much'? What about lottery winners, should they be windfall taxed above and beyond normal income taxes too? What about Big Pharma? They have much higher profit margins. What about that big pay raise at work? Should that get 'winfall' taxed too? What happens if you make more than most people in the same job category?
Winfall tax proposals, is pandering to the populace. No one forces you to buy oil or gasoline. If you don't like the price, don't buy it.
i guess its time to throw my little story out there.
i keep reading everyones stories and thinking how brave you have all been, coming out of the organisation and facing all the repercussions of doing so.. .

first of all i do not want to turn this into an american bashing thread, that is not my intention at all.. i would like to hear americans opinions as to what my thirteen year old son asked me tonight.. on the way back from swimming tonight my two sons (13 and 11) and myself started talking about wars.
my 11 year old was the first to bring it up talking about wwi & ww2.
we had an interesting conversation about it, then the subject got onto nuclear bombs.

There are great patriots in both parties, in the military and in civilian life. It doesn't make you a brain dead cult follower, it makes you someone who cares enough about your country that you will participate. The election in 2004 wasn't won or lost by the people that voted it was lost by all the non-voting blow hards (the majority) who were to lazy to get off their ass and get to a voting booth.
Unfortunately I don't think getting them off their lazy asses simply to vote would change much. Is a massive influx of uninformed voters "good"? As I have posted elsewhere, let's be honest; America's elections are nothing more than popularity contests. How many voters do you really know that are up to speed on most of the issues, and where each candidate stands on them? The most qualified candidates get eliminated pretty quickly. It's about TV personnas. So it takes more than 15 minutes once every 4 years to "do something" in my opinion. How to get more people to sit up and take notice of real issues? I can't answer that. No idea.
