Few Jehovah's Witnesses bother to GRASP THEIR OWN THEOLOGY!!!
by Terry inkeep this one fact in mind about jehovah's witnesses.
they exist in three parts throughout their history.. 1. honest bible students attracted to the gimmicks of russell (charts, graphs, chronologies, pyramid inches, etc.
) expected the end of the world to come and they wanted to know more.. 2.contrarian hard heads under rutherford wanted to prove everybody was wrong about everything except themselves.

A few years ago when I was a JW, I asked an Elder why he had become a JW. Now this guy was a barrister (lawyer) so he not some idiot.
He replied because being a JW meant that he did not have to think about what to believe. It was all set out for him by the Watchtower organisation. All he had to do is go along with what was being taught. If it was wrong it was not his fault, and that it would be corrected at some future date.
It was the way he said this in all seriousness, that got me. That his "eternal life" depended not on his own personal conviction and belief, but on somebody 3,000 miles away deciding what was right or wrong to believe.

Wasn't it the lack of love that really pushed many of us out the door?
It was the lack of love at a time my family and I needed it that shook me more than anything. It led me to look closely at what I had been believing for 25 years. Eventually leading me to leave and disassociate.

3) The Second coming, as noted, is 45 years after the end of the gentile times. That is 45 years after 1947 and thus in 1992.
So Christ came in 1992? Invisibly?

The practice of "Shepherding Calls" (attention ex-elders)
by Lady Zombie inthe practice of "shepherding calls" has always been somewhat of a mystery to me.. growing up, a shepherding call was for jws who were doing something that a few/some/most (didn't matter which) found stumbling or suspicious.
for instance, i remember my folks gossiping to each other about a jw couple who had been sloughing off the meetings in order to go dancing.
one of the congregation members (who were absent themselves on a particular night) saw them going into a dance club on a meeting night and promptly ran to an elder.

In my congregation, us Min Servants, used to accompany an Elder on "shepherding visit" as part of our "Elders in training" program.
The directions from the FDS via the CO was that every member of the congregation had to be visited twice a year. That was in theory. It was rare that every member was visited in a year. Visits usually consisted of getting members to do more time in ministry.
Even so I think I can count on one hand the number of times my family and I got a visit.
Then at a time when we did need help it was non-exisitent.
I remember one sister saying she had been in the congregation 22 years and never once recieved a visit.
There was usually a few visits just before the CO was due to come.

Examples of men carrying water in Bible times or before
by The Nothing Man ini am looking for any examples, whether they be written in the bible or in other 'ancient' sources, of men carring water.
(other than the man carrying a pitcher of water at luke 22) i am trying to back up a claim that said 'in ancient times, no man ever carried water'.
i know i can pick the brains of you fine intelligent people!

Having done a quick search of references to water in scripture most deal with women fetching water.
The odd one does mention men such as :
Ex 2:19 They answered, "An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds. He even drew water for us and watered the flock."
This is the occasion when Moses came across the women being harrassed at the well. It comes across as a surprise to them that he "even" drew water from the well for them.
Lev 15:13 'When a man is cleansed from his discharge, he is to count off seven days for his ceremonial cleansing; he must wash his clothes and bathe himself with fresh water, and he will be clean
Here the man has to wash his clothes. Whether you would call this "domestic" or "ritual" washing as it was part of the Law.
Ruth 2:9 "Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled
Here it mentions that "the jars the men have filled" as they were working in the fields and they would need water to drink.
But otherwise as far as I could see in scripture it was always the woman that did the water carrying.
This continues today usually in Eastern and African cultures.
Though I have known a couple of Western men who the idea of even filling a kettle for a cup of tea was NOT mens work.

One example comes to mind at 2 Sam 23:16
So the three mighty men broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he poured it out before the LORD.
It depends whether you mean that a man just carries water for his own needs or does it for domestic purposes. Some cultures today the men will not carry water if its for domestic purposes, like cooking or washing. You can see this on programs that show you the women having to walk miles to get water, but you very rarely see the men doing it.

I received the following from a JW friend who received the information from a JW who lives in the area of the case.
There’s a guy from Merseyside called James Challinnor who married a Geordie lass and lives in Ferry Hill just outside of Durham - and her Liver is failing. Been bad for years apparently. They have two little kids and the poor girl is close to death because of the blood issue - they can do a Liver Transplant or surgery of some description - but not without Blood.
She was going to Leeds hospital but they have now transferred her to one in Newcastle. Poor kid is getting weaker and weaker and soon she will pass the go/no-go apparently
Tragic Story, WBTS looks like its going to claim another martyr
I knew James Challinnor when he was a young boy.
Knew his family, they were in the sister congregation that shared the same Kingdom Hall as mine.
Knew James father when I first became a JW.A life wasted and a family destroyed.

The growing irrelevance of the Watchtower message
by drew sagan inin many ways it appears as if the watchtower movement is slowing down.
a number of changes over the last few years certainly show that the watchtower is in a period of transition.
they have cut back on the number of magazines they print as well as lowered the cost of production by eliminating things like hard backed books.

This has been one of the best threads I've read.
The points raised and discussed have been thoughtful and well thought out. I will add my own viewpoint for what its worth.
I was a JW from 1971 to 2001 when I disassociated. I still have a wife and two daughters still in. We have not spoken since 2001.
The congregation I was in was always a strong one. It was recognised as being very "spiritual" that is it kept to the WT line. The original congregation split into two, because even after 1975 in grew. Both congregations shared the the same Kingdom Hall. Which eventually led us building a bigger new one which we could share. The North congregation was always the bigger one. It could reach 150 attendance for Public talk and Watchtower study. Even the School/Service meetings averaged 130-140. I was in the South congregation slightly smaller average for Public talk?WT study was about 130, with probably about 100 for other meetings. One of the book groups was usually held in my home and we had, 20-30 attending on average. In the early years I was there the Elders were older men, aged from 50 to 70's, all either born JWs or had been for 50 years.. As these died off in later years they were replaced by younger ones say 30 to 50. I became a Min Servant. When I last had contact with that congregation in 1999,it seemed still as strong as ever, as did the sister congregation.
In the last few years say since 2001. Those two congregations seemed to have fallen apart. Number have dropped. My non-JW daughter who was still living with her mother, a couple of years ago went to a Public/WT study meeting of the North congregation, attendance at one time could hit 150, but she said there probably only about 30 there. My old congregation (South) was getting about 80-90 attendance. The number of publishers when I was there was 86. The book group I last heard only has 8 attending! I used to run two coaches to go to the District Convention, now there are none. Attendance at our DC was hitting 20,000 at one time, the last one I went to had 12,000.
Over the years Elders have resigned, I heard because of "internal differences." Other congregation members are attending meetings at other local congregation even though it requires a fair journey to get to even the nearest one. Others have just stopped going. Other ex-JWs across the area have said similar things about their own ex-congregations. Congregations that you would have said at one time would be steadfast and strong for the "Truth" are just seemingly hanging on.
Is this all a symptom of what has been mentioned on this thread?
Are JWs suffering from "Armageddon Burnout" ? In 6 years time it will be 2014. A hundred years since the Watchtower claims Jesus took up kingly power in 1914. Another 4 years and it will a hundred years when Jesus is supposed to have chosen the Watchtower.
Did they really think they would be here this long?
Or are more JWs seeing through WT teachings and starting to think for themselves? There are so many factors involved. Including just life and living in this world we are in.
There will always be a hardcore of followers, as you get in any religion, who will hang on nomatter what.
But whatever it is that is happening to the Watchtower let all play a part in chipping away at it.
Forgive me if I rambled on. I was doing this at work and kept getting interrupted
But felt had to reply tosuch a good thread.
