That's a pretty old story. I remember hearing it about 25 years ago. If there is any truth to it, that little boy would be an adult by now. Considering the poor retention rate of JW's, it's not unlikely that he has left the organization and is now being shunned by his adopted parents.

Problems with the "Bogus AWAA Fan Page"..
by OUTLAW ingood afternoon jwn... .
i`ve spent the morning and part of my afternoon... getting to the bottom of... why names were added to the awaa fan page... it`s a dangerous thing to happen in our world... faders can be outed,we can lose,family,friends... the results can be an absolute disaster... .

That chart makes it look like other members can only add members for an open group. If that is the case, how did this problem ever develop for a secret group?

I started another thread that got locked right away because it was supposed to be all sorted out. However, I don't think it is. My understanding is that people's information is still at risk if they have been added to a group without their knowledge and the entire group of over a thousand people can see that they are members. I only started another thread because it doesn't appear that anybody from the AAWA is doing anything to correct that.
Please correct me if I am mistaken.

The AAWA Facebook Group Needs To Reform Or Be Disbanded
by DT inthe has been a lot of misinformation and confusion about the whole aawa facebook group mess.. i believe that the aawa had good intentions and that many of the mistakes that were made were made by others.. however, the aawa has to take responsibility for the presence of the group itself.
if they set up a group that can be abused and causes harm, then they are partially responsible for the harm that is caused.. it appears that some of the privacy concerns were exaggerated the group is currently secret, but that still means that other members can see who the members are.. that isn't acceptable since some of the members were added without their knowledge or permission.. i doubt there is a practical way to correct the problem at this late date.
i don't see a problem if they start a new group that has better security and somehow insures that nobody is being added without their knowledge.

I hate to complain about the AAWA because I still hope they can be effective. However, this is about the worst possible mistake they can make. It effects the entire XJW community and we have a right to complain if their actions cause this kind of harm.
I am more than willing to forgive past mistakes if decisive action is taken to correct an ongoing problem.

I think the AAWA Facebook group is doing more harm than good. I don't think there is any justification for a group with that name where people can be added aginst their will. There are too many risks, even if it is "secret". I partially blame Facebook, but they probably aren't going to change.
I know Facebook might be part of the AAWA strategy, but I think they would be better off cutting their losses. They are losing too much credibility. They need to do something quickly if they are still going to have a hope of being effective.
I thought the debate over the name was kind of silly, but this is far more serious. Damage has been done and the potential for more harm is still present. If they can set up a new group that insures that only those who request to be added are added, then great. If not, they would probably be better off without it.

It sounds like this "secret" group has over a thousand members and every one of those members can see who is in the group, even though some were added without their knowledge. This is still an unacceptable risk. If it can't be fixed, then it should be shut down and started fresh. I assume you can start a secret group that has to manually approve new members. That may be the only way to avoid this problem.

Will AAWA Become another cult?
by His Excellency inplease sorry for english, i have only been learning for 18 months.
everyone please think about it, and beware of any initiative designed to solve "a community problem".
becasue russel also started his own cult on a similar premise like this , claiming to have all the answers to issues whose solutions seems obscured to the majority in his days, and here we are today, constantly bashing our fingers on the keyboard in a bid to finding comfort from the mess he had put all of us into.

I think any organization has the potential to develop cult like characteristics.
I don't think the danger is very high for the AAWA, but it is worth discussing and it pays to be cautious. I think that the AAWA has already taken some positive steps like being unwilling to advocate a particular religion or philosophy.
I think part of the danger comes from the XJW community itself. There has been considerable support for the goals of the AAWA, but a lot of disappointment with some minor details like the name. I think there has been a tendency to look at the AAWA as a kind of champion of the XJW community that will engage in some kind of epic battle with the Watchtower Society that XJW's as a whole can support.
I don't think that is a reasonable expectation. I can't speak for the AAWA, but I would be surprised if they viewed themselves that way. They are an organization that was formed by a specific group of people for a specific purpose. I think their name describes their purpose (as I understand it) almost perfectly. I'm glad that they haven't succumbed to public pressure to change their name and focus to something that might receive broader support while possibly diluting its effectiveness.
I think we would be wise to view the AAWA as simply a tool. It fills a need. It's name clearly defines what it is about and it will hopefully be a useful contact for journalists. It is may also provide some much needed organization for activities that raise awareness.
It also fails to fill certain needs that many XJW's have. I suggest that some of those needs would be better served in ways that don't involve looking to an organization.

I think it is incredibly valuable for any journalist who is writing a story about the Watchtower Society to be able to consult and quote an organization that is obviously opposed to the methods of the Watchtower Society. We haven't had that until now and that has probably prevented certain news stories from getting the attention they deserve.

"I'm a firm believer that once a decision is voted on, we stick to it."
I think that is one of the things that can make this group effective. I have seen all sorts of great ideas on this board fail to get any traction because of bickering and disagreements about how to proceed. A small group can be far more effective in getting things started. Then others can choose to help if they wish.
