The fetishizing of the generation of 1914 has left a de facto gerentocracy. One single charismatic tyrant who kept replacing his lieutenants out of paranoia would present more wiggle room for eventual reform than the current power structure. Which leads to another interesting question. Which leads to another question...should children being raised in the Untruth be stealthily introduced by their worldy stepparents to the writings of Machiavelli and Musashi and at what tender age?

Cults and Convergent Evolution
by cognisonance ina thought popped in my mind on the way to work today.
most jws don't think they are in a cult (or an organization with many cult-like features).
this isn't really surprising considering most cults dont think they are, well, a cult.

Perhaps reading about how cults stopped being cults and became congregations that now support and encourage each other can also provide clues as to how this could happen for Jehovah's Witnesses. Some classic examples are the Reformed Latter-Day Saintsnow called the Community of Christ, and the Worldwide Church of God, now organized as Grace Communion International.

The hardship of being a gay Jehovahs witness.
by truthwillsetyoufree inplease spare a moment to consider the difiiculties faced by gay jehovahs witnesses.
i was raised and baptised as a very serious jw.
every waking moment of my day was lived for jehovahs and his organization and for nothing else.

The irony is that the moustaches but no beards rule makes the all the brothers in the congregation look like a bunch of gay donut-eating cops moonlighting as out-of-shape pornstars when viewed as a group.

Online Higher Education
by SonoftheTrinity insince the faithful and discreet slave class now opposes higher education because it allegedly brings with it 'bad association', i wonder what their take is on online education.
let's remember that distance education was pioneered by fundamentalist saudi arabia and apartheid south africa for the very reasons that the jehovah's witnesses criticize higher education.
my wife is one of the faithful and i fear for our kids future, that they will see no point in keeping their grades up.

I think that telling people that your studies were online is NOT the best strategy in many cases, but since many colleges are hitting hard times, online programs can only get more popular. As for exclusively distance institutions, I would rather have a degree from the University of South Africa than the University of Phoenix, because it started out as the distance education division of Oxford, and because very few Americans know it is a 95% distance institution with students all over the world.

STOP calling JW's a CULT--unless . . . they fit the checklist!
by Terry init is unkind, premature and even irresponsible to label people with whom we disagree using pejorative names.. for example, labeling a movement as a cult.. consider this example:.
sociologists d. bromley and a. shupe once described what they called the tnevnoc cult.
membership was open only to women, who were required to shave their heads, change their names, and wear specific clothing once they had entered the group.

Being a member of the Rastafarian community, I would say that we are labelled as cultists by society at large more than Jehovah's Witnesses which is unfair, but at the same time interesting. Perceived antinomianism, which is the opposite of the situation with the Jehovah's Witnesses, can get a religion labelled as a cult too. The different Rastafarian Orders (Nyabinghi, Boboshanti, Twelve Tribes) which resemble Fraternal Lodges more than Churches, vary in doctrine so much that the only thing that keeps them under the same umbrella is a vague patriotic and cultural unity. We are a cult because we love to start house and storefront churches that throw all night rent parties where everyone is invited and not all our square neighbors appreciate our Jerichoesque exuberance. Having values which are at odds with the rest of society doesn't make a religion a cult. Authoritarianism, where absolute power corrupts absolutely, is.

Since the Faithful and Discreet Slave Class now opposes Higher Education because it allegedly brings with it 'bad association', I wonder what their take is on Online Education. She already approves of technical education, especially since our boys have both shown an interest in auto mechanics. I've thought about giving them a 6 week learning vacation when they graduate high school at the Barnett School of Bicycle Repair might get them an assembly job where they don't have to deal with annoying people as much as a service job when they graduate. Plus at least for 6 weeks they will know what it is to be young wild and free. Lord knows by the time they graduate high school they will realize how annoying the JW world is for a young black man and that annoying people in your professional life will only bring more stress. Perhaps if they can meet someone within the Organization with the same professional interests they can be study buddies in online university. I have taken online courses and that is the main drawback, that it is too easy to give in to pressure to do things other than study, so a study buddy in the same program of online education is essential. Through online education we can save money, avoid so-called 'bad associations' and the Elders are none the wiser. At least Apartheid and Wahhabism were good for something.

Should Jehovah Witnesses have Cats?
by RAS innew light!.
there are numerous reasons why a loyal dedicated servant of god should use his bible-trained conscience to arrive at a proper understanding of why cats are not advisable as pets or companions for christians.
consider, then, the following facts: .

Your parody comes across as a straw man. I thought it was real. I live in an area with a large Muslim population and some schools of Islam forbid keeping dogs in the house so what with Jehovah's Witnesses being so extreme about some things what you wrote made me think it was really a Watchtower publication. You Got Me!

Raising Children in more than one language
by SonoftheTrinity ini recently told my wife that i am speaking only in the jamaican dialect from now on in my house because she has failed to teach her children her native language because she has put religion first, manners and discipline second, their education third, and her native language somewhere at the bottom.
while i am not jamaican, nor have i been to jamaica i lived in a jamaican rastafarian community as a rastafarian.
i am now orthodox christian as are many rastafarians and i still consider myself culturally rastafarian but no longer identify with their heresies.

This is my thing. I want the world to be my stepkids oyster so that they can rise as high as their dreams take them, so they can be a Serena Williams if they want to. I mentioned them because they were raised as Jehovah's Witnesses. But as a Stepdad its not my call, and I can't push them to achieve. Only challenge them to rebel. If I can't be the spiritual leader, I must be a spiritual trickster to steal my wife's legacy (her passing down the JW religion) from her just like Jacob did to Esau in order to save them. There is a kind of trickery that is righteous.
