the friend asked my mom how i've been and my mom said she made a face and kind of went "ehhh..." and talked about my lack of meeting attendance (she doesn't know it's way more than that) and my friend shook her head and said, "aw, that's too bad, but i've been in ruts like that before" as though i'm just depressed and don't feel like going lately.

They use the scripture that you can choose the blessing or the malediction...choose the blessing by not getting baptized.

iCeltic, that reason was given in the very first letter that was read. Many people complained and noted that people in some countries have always paid high gas prices and in third world countries people walk more than an hour each way to attend the book study. A letter then followed saying that the book study was cancelled so there could be a family study night.

I could not agree more. I was heavily criticized for continuing my education after high school. The elders tried to convince me and my mom that a certificate from a community college would do. Fortunately, my dad is not a JW and believes in the advancement of colored people. He had choice words for the elders.
After graduating, I received a letter inviting me to Bethel. I was also invited to join the IBC. I declined both and the then CO contacted me regarding doing more ( I was already pioneering). I almost gave in. I never applied but was invited simply because of the very education they condemned me for obtaining.
