  just a bit of fun.... try and come up with a meaningful english sentance that is gramatically correct that has the word 'and' 5 times in a row.. i'll post my version of the solution later.

  Hey Logi, that's almost cheating ;-) I mean, a language with a command to list the program itself...duh!

  Eman, correct of course, here's another solution:

  This sentence has thirtyone letters.

  As regards the Titanic thing, I can't remember anything about that film except that I was forced to watch it after a long, hard day of work and fell asleep almost immediately. But from the description I'd guess the idea was to prevent the wheel effect of the propellers (well-known to anyone who's ever tried to maneuver a boat in a small harbour), which would happen if you had 2 props turning in one direction and one in the other.

  Ah, I like "brainteasers" like that.

  Try this:

  This sentence has _______ letters

  Fill the blank with a spelled-out number so that the sentence is correctly describing itself.

  Kind of similar, and most computer geeks out there may already know that one, but those who don't should try it anyway: write a (syntactically correct!) program in your favourite language that prints out its own source code.

  Once you know the trick it's fairly simple, although there's still a challenge to find shorter versions.

  i moved to my current location, a house in a quiet, friendly, family-oriented neighborhood, in july of this year.

  i've been here five months.

  i'm usually home on saturday mornings and sunday afternoons.

  I've been living in big-city territory not far away from the local bethel for almost three years now: not a single call so far. I haven't even _seen_ any JWs in door-to-door service. Only the occasional jdub lurking in the darkest part of the underground station, grim-faced, holding up his magazines with a frozen half-smile. But even that has become a rare sight.

  Before that, I used to live a mere 200 metres or so from a KH in a small town. Never seen any dubs out in field service, either. Just that one guy at the railway station. Always the same guy, for years.

  If you ask me, the much acclaimed door-to-door work is dead. The service hours statistics are a joke. Nobody gives a damn about the JWs, most people don't even know whether they still exist at all. At least around here, central Europe, that is.

  Computer/web design question

  posted below is an email i received at work.

  i immediately forwarded it to our web-designer to find out if what this person says is true.

  he replied that it was a scam.

  Your web site claims to be secure, but it is not. When I clicked the
  link for the form, I noticed that the URL did not begin with https, it
  began http. If you were on a secure server, your URL would have to
  begin with https. I then looked at your code and found that it was NOT
  secure.

  Well, the tone of that e-mail is sort of strange, the remarks about FrontPage are not entirely false, but irrelevant, and I don't know if it's actually possible to sue someone over this (OK, I guess in the USA it's possible :-)).

  However, the person has a valid point: sending sensitive personal data over an unencrypted link is a security risk. It doesn't take someone particulary skilled to exploit that risk, it only takes someone sitting at the right position between the user and the server with the necessary piece of software.

  he got the following reply.

  I think what's new in this reaction is the creating of guilt in the letter writer: you are making us sad, you are not thankful because we taught you "truth" and now you don't believe us.

  New? The Watchtower has an inexhaustible supply of guilt trips, and that's the only thing they give away for free ;-) Seriously, I think the fact that someone took the time to write more than a copied and pasted response may be a sign that Selters has not gotten a lot of written enquiries so far.

  Oh, and what I found remarkable: India (with a population of 1 billion) has only 22000 publishers and a growth rate of just 3 (three) percent. That is one hard territory, isn't it?

  Thanks for the scans (though they're missing some parts, unfortunately).

  Glancing over the avg. publisher counts now...wow, France is _still_ reporting decrease...Scandinavia as well...Eastern Europe partly stagnating, partly growing...Western Europe partly stagnating, partly decreasing...stagnation in the USA, slight decrease in Australia. It's somewhat surprising that Russia is down to 4% growth. Substantial growth in the so-called Third World, but it seems the list of countries with 2-digit growth rates is shrinking.

  All in all, it looks pretty much like last year's report. To be honest, I had expected a slowdown of the decrease in Europe, but so far that doesn't seem to happen. Now it would be interesting to see if anything has changed in the baptism statistics.

  The Already Tired Argument of Bin Laden's Guilt

  there has been several threads since the start of the war on afghanistan (and before it), concerning the issue of bin laden's guilt.

  many have seen the obvious, that he and those who harbor him, are guilty, and that the attacks on afghanistan are completely justified if not the only choice for the u.s. still others claim the ridiculous notion that "evidence" should have been presented to the taliban first, and a "trial" should have been held for bin laden before any actions were taken.

  i realize most readers on this forum could care less, and the fact remains that the few of us who have argued these points are pretty tired of talking in circles.

  For those interested, in his most recent video release, Bin Laden has taken responsibility for his organization in the WTC attacks. Evidence is no longer needed, he has fessed up.

  If I were a violent and well-known anti-American maniac interested in becoming (or staying) a leadership figure of an extremist movement, I'd take responsibility, too. I'd take responsibility for every criminal act against Americans committed anywhere, unless it's clear that someone else did it.

  I'm absolutely convinced that the guy is in full support of that mass murder; he or some of his comrades may have even trained and supplied the terrorists. I'm just wondering: if he was directly involved and knew everything about it (possibly giving direct orders), why didn't he confess right away, preferably the minute it happened, for increased effect? Why did he wait so long? Doesn't make sense to me.

  If Bin Laden didn't exist, he would have to be invented - he's a face, he's a target, he's a figure to be ridiculed and hated. There's nothing scarier than an invisible, faceless, shapeless enemy lurking "somewhere out there".

  Is the WTS just going to dig bigger and bigger holes to get buried in?

  My own reaction to all the lame and contradictory explanations for their UNDPI assocation was: LIARS! But now, I think I was wrong - I think these guys just don't have an idea what they were and are doing. So much for being "spirit directed".

  As the old saying goes, never attribute to malice what can sufficiently be explained by incompetence.
