Julia Sweeney's "Letting Go of God", on the other hand, was wonderful! Informative, thought provoking, respectful, funny at the right moments...

Blondie: Check out Mythra as well...
As for Religulous: I didn't like it. I fell Maher missed a great opportunity to inform by using sarcasm and by presenting only extreme examples of religious thought. It's tone was insulting to believers and that is no way to make people think and actually learn something, which is what I wish he would have used the piece for.
He probably made the chasm between believers and un-believers even deeper. I hope people realize that not all atheists are like Bill Maher...

"My" atheism...
by changeling ina comment on dgp's thread about being kind to jw's promted me to post this thread.. as a life long (46 years) jw, i was conditioned to doing "the right thing" because it was required of me.
i was also conditioned to be on the lookout for others not doing the right thing and either distancing myself from them or reporting them to the elders.. today, i consider myself an atheist.
i have nobody telling me what the right thing is or fear of being punished for not doing it.

Outtaservice: LOL! I like the message of "My Way", but it is such a cliche that usually makes me cringe a little... :)

You are not derailing my thread Jeff. Your opinion is valuable. I too, feel some believers think I have lost something, but, in fact, I feel I have gained so much more.
Thank you for your compliments, wobble. Writting that was vey revealing to me. It just poured out of me one day... :)

I see that you are really trying to be non-judgemental, elderelite, and I appreciate that. I also see that you meant no offense by any of your posts. I did not take offense, just wanted to clarify, at least my personal stand, on the matter.
I do sense that you are still heavily influenced by WT teachings and I also sense you are a bit torn... after all, you are here.
So, w/o too many specifcs that could "out" you, could you tell us just why you are here? Are you having doubts? If so, what are your "issues"? Are you here to help us back to the fold? Somehow I don't think so... If you are having doubts, do you have plans to stop being an elder and eventually fade? Are you woking as a spy for our benefit; for theirs?
I'm not being "cheeky", I really want to know. :)

You really are an elder???!!!
Do I know you??? LOL!
The comment you made about "being under obligation to treat others kindly", and something similar you said on the other thread, are what really get me. How is being kind because of being "under obligation" a good thing? Yes, I guess it's better that not being kind, but, still...
I think if you met more atheists (here or IRL) you'd find that being "mean bastards" is not the norm, but rather a false streotype. :)
