I heard the term "blue eyed soul" for the first time this week, in a BBC documentary on Scottish pop called "Caledonia Dreaming". They were referring to artists including Deacon Blue and Hue and Cry.

STRICKLY HYPOTHETICAL......
by agapa37 inthis question is a hypothetical one, posing a, what would you do type situation.
think back to the days of the bible kings for the nation of israel.
there were bad kings who took israel off track by their rule and some good kings who instituded changes that brought them back on track.

If it were possible to reform the WT, a lot of JWs would simply reform in the original mould, or move on to other high control religious groups.

If it was possible to get rid of the WT completely, what would some or all of the JWs do?

Here's the thing: if you could remove the gnat-straining control, the persecution complex, the 'do more' mentality, the 'real soon now' obsession, the judgemental approach, the shunning and the blood prohibition, some JWs would be relieved but a significant amount would regroup with the old teachings. They stay because they like it the way it is.

There is no 'right' for British women to have pain relief when in labour!
by Gill inmy neighbours daughter recently gave birth in a large uk teaching hospital to her second child.. the baby was a very large 10 lb boy and the labour went horrendously, during which grandma and the mother's partner had to argue with medical staff for help and pain relief.. they were told that women in labour have no 'right' to pain relief in the united kingdom and despite the fact that this young woman was screaming in total despair for nearly fifteen hours before four doctors turned up to help her and give her an epidural anaesthetic., she had no help but gas and air which didn't help her at all.
the hospital was crowded with young polish women also giving birth and the staff midwives told the girl's mother that they had to concentrate on these polish young women as they did not speak english and many of their babies were at risk because they were so small.. this young woman did not even have a private room to herself but was in a crowded ward!.
the young neighbour's baby twice went into distress with his heart rate dropping desperately low.

There's no 'right' for British women to birth at home, no 'right' not to be forced to labour on your back subjected to continuous monitoring, no 'right' to labour without chemical inducement, because there are not enough midwives, because there isn't enough funding for maternity services, leaving qualified midwives unemployed.

Who would be interested in a JWD book club?
by TheSilence ini've been thinking about organizing a jwd book club.
would anyone be interested?
everyone could throw out suggestions of books and i could pick one at random for each read.. i was thinking a book every 2 weeks, but i know a lot of people have kids and obligations so maybe every month would be better?

My conversation with a Born Again.
by yourmomma ini spoke with a born again today.
i am wondering if this person represents how they all think or just some.
i'll assume just some.

"Born again" is an experience, not a denomination. There are born again Catholics, Anglicans, Baptists, Methodists....In fact, one could argue that being a Christian at all means you are born again. Some of our most dearly held and respected posters here are born again.

I bet my 2.5 grams of red blood cells that more people have died from transfused diseases and adverse reactions than from refusal, and as the Australian government is realizing, its not the best option, especially now.
I would like to examine this premise. Jefferywhat is probably right that more people have died as a result of contaminated blood than have died due to refusing a blood transfusion. That does not justify avoiding transfusion on health grounds.
A very small proportion of people who need transfusions refuse them (assuming that JWs are the majority of these, and that JWs are not more prone to accidents and illness than the general population, it would be about 0.1% of patients), some die, and some survive. A small proportion of people who have received blood transfusions have received contaminated blood products leading to their death. Had all the people who received blood transfusions refused a transfusion - would more people or fewer people have died? The apologist can only answer that it is impossible to predict how many would have lived or died, but the pragmatic answer is that blood transfusion has saved far more people than it has harmed.
You could just as well say that since some people are killed in road traffic accidents on the way to the emergency room, in the event of a heart attack, the best treatment is to stay at home.

The Year Of Living Biblically
by Fe2O3Girl inin the guardian today there was an edited extract from "the year of living biblically", the account of one man's attempt to follow the bible literally.
it included his account of attempting to stone an adulterer, and his wife's reaction to his refusal to touch her, or any surface she sat or lay on in the week after she started menstruating.
the whole article is here.

The whole article is here. Here's another quote:
The Bible's female impurity laws are more famous, but there are, in fact, corresponding laws of male impurity. Leviticus says a man shall be unclean for the day after his "emission of seed", as the Bible phrases it, and must take a bath to purify himself. My male friends usually assume I'm evading the handshake because of germs. Since I'm required to tell the truth, I say, "No, not germs." Then I explain. Which somehow turns out to be even more awkward than discussing their cycles with women. Men just don't like talking about their emissions.
"Well, I haven't in a week," John said. "Not that it's any of your business."
I've learned that men of my vintage aren't having a whole lot of sex.
