I forgot to say Welcome to you earlier. I was a 3rd Generation JW but left many years ago.
While doing your research take time to read up on Johannes Greber. Lady Lee posted some detailed info on him at www.jehovahs-witness.com/12/125625/1.ashx. Here are some others with interesting details: www.ecrater.com/product.php?pid=555122; www.witnessinc.com/greber.html
Just Google Johannes Greber and read as much as you want.
Another interesting person is C.J. Woodworth. He was a major individual during the Rutherford period of the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society (WTBTS). He wrote the commentary on Revelation in the 1917 book The Finished Mystery. Rutherford made him editor of The Golden Age magazine (later called Consolation - then Awake) from its inaugural edition in 1919 to 1946. Here's one good site for info on Woodworth: www.geocities.com/Heartland/2919/wood.html.
OnTheWayOut just mentioned www.jwfacts.com. If you haven't already heard of "New Light" or the "Light Gets Brighter" get ready. That is how they explain all their doctrine changes (i.e., false prophesies). Here is a good link about "Light": www.jwfacts.com/index_files/light.htm.
Also on www.jwfacts.com/index_files/Jehovah.htm there is an excellent discussion on God's name.
One last thing - note in the NWT at the end of the FOREWARD they actually advise the reader that they have inserted words "to complete the sense in the English text;" The "interpolations" are indicated by brackets [ ] in the text.
Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary defines "interpolate" as "1. to introduce (something additional or extraneous) between other things or parts; interject; ... 2. Math. ... 3. to alter (a text) by the insertion of new matter, esp. deceptively or without authorization. 4. to insert (new or spurious matter) in this manner. 5. to make an interpolation."
All of the above are things that I learned in the last year. None of them I knew while I was a JW for 30+ years.

"They don't want to know how much money we give them ..." (but they sure don't mind begging for more all the time at the local Kingdom Halls and at all assemblies. They brag that they don't pass the collection plate. They have better more effective methods of getting money out of their followers. Also check out the November Watchtowers [I believe that is the correct issue] - every year they provide detailed instructions how to leave all your $$, stocks, bonds and property to them.)
They won't provide a financial report on the organization either. Just ask for a copy of their latest complete financial report and see what you get. In some countries they are required to release it. Someone here on JWD just recently posted the UK financial report. You will not see that for the US.
I recently asked my mother where is the latest financial report. She handed me the Feb 1, 2007 Watchtower which lists all the publisher statistics. At the very end it shows a $ amount that was supposedly spent. They will not provide the total donations; the total of their assets; the amount they spend on lawyers fighting the child abuse lawsuits, the amount they spend settling lawsuits against them, etc. -

Planning Trip To DragonCon In Atlanta; any suggestions . . .
by Madame Quixote inappreciated regarding other atlanta attractions that you've personally "endured" or enjoyed.
after squandering yet another perfectly lovely holiday weekend glued to the computer, and doing housework and laundry, i've decided to plan a sojourn to atlanta, georgia for labor day weekend.
my observations and experience of this city have been limited to airport layovers, and i never really thought about visiting.. i'm excited about dragoncon, but even more excited about touring atlanta for a weekend, especially after checking out its attractions via the internet.

Riding the rails (MARTA) is fun if you are new to the city. Some of the train stations are quite unique. I would suggest that you take time to ride to the end of each line and see the stations and some of the surrounding areas.
There are a lot of things to see if you exit at the Five Points Station which is where the East/West and North/South lines cross. Underground Atlanta is right there at the Five Points Station. It is worth a walk through. Above ground at Underground has been built up also and has some interesting shops.
Atlanta has lots of water fountains & water falls. Keep an eye out for them.
Centennial Olympic Park and the Aquarium are close together and within a few blocks of either the Five Points Station or the Peachtree Center Station. You should experience the escalators at the Peachtree Center Station. (I used to have nightmares of very tall & steep escalators until I worked at Peachtree Center. Once I got used to those elevators the nightmares went away. It is breathtaking. On some of the walls the way the tiles are positioned make you feel like you are falling. Anyway the ride is worth the fear.) Notice the rock walls in the Peachtree Center station. It was blasted out of solid granite.
You can get your ticket online for the Aquarium. Check the calendar on their site to see how crowded it will be and try to choose a time to arrive that won't be too crowded. Labor Day weekend may be too crowded to really enjoy it.
Fernbank Science Center is interesting. There are several different things to do there including an IMAX theatre.
The Botanical Gardens at Piedmont Park are usually nice but at the end of a hot summer the flowers probably won't be too great outside. The greenhouse should be okay.
If there is anyway you could get out to Stone Mountain at night you should see the laser light show. If you've never seen it - it's well worth the trip. As far as that goes, if you can get there you could spend the afternoon exploring the park & stay for the evening light show on the mountain.
Have fun. -

I have always gone directly to Active Topics. Started doing that when I first found the site.
To me it's just more interesting to see what the latest discussions are. -

Honey Bees..Is it just media hype??
by Lady Liberty ingood morning everyone!!.
happy sunday!!
yesterday we went to our local farmers market and came across a vender that had a whole honey bees display.

I went on a half-moon hike Friday night led by a ranger at one of the local parks. At one point he was telling us about one of the trees blooming in the desert now and said how many bees there are all over these trees.
Someone asked about the problem with all the bees dying off. The ranger said it's not all bees - the wild one are fine and there are lots of them. It is only the commercial type bees that are having a problem.
It was interesting but I do not know how much of an expert he is. He did seem to know quite a bit about the other critters in the desert. -

I was trying to find something on this quote. The only 2 things that came up on the search were jw-media & silentlambs. It apparently is not something new on the WTS website as it is referred to on the silentlambs guestbook by someone on 6/8/2002.

I received this info via email today: Quote: The Watchtower's Media site and email notification have been notifying their readers that they are taking an active part in 'doing everything they can' in the child abuse issue. Obviously the Dateline NBC episode that aired a few days ago had a big effect, and they are anticipating much more. Here is part of their email notification:
"People didn't have the body of knowledge 18 or 20 years ago to say that this is something that will harm your child emotionally, if you don't address it. Parents didn't know the seriousness ... and the long-term effects." --Dr. Gail Bethea-Jackson, LCSW-C, B.C.D., specializing in victimization, children and adolescent issues, and post-traumatic stress disorder. End Quote. -

See www.locateadoc.com/articles.cfm/372/1352
That website explains the Intralase lasik procedure. It is "bladeless". It is amazing to watch. I watched several operations while my daughter was waiting her turn a couple years ago. Dr. Woodhams named in the article is the doc that did both my daughter and me.
I wouldn't go to anyone that hasn't done hundreds or thousands of the procedures successfully. The procedure is so simple and quick it's easier to just do both at once. It takes about 15 minutes to do both eyes.
Maybe if there is a doctor in your area that does these you could make arrangements to go in and watch a few operations to make you feel better about it. Dr. Woodhams has a closed circuit tv set up in the back waiting room where they actually prep you for surgery (give you valium, drops in your eyes to deaden them, etc). While you are waiting your turn, you can watch everyone ahead of you getting their eyes done on the tv.
I probably would have never had it done if I had not watched him do several of them. -

It's been a little over a month since I had my surgery and the light is still bothering me really bad.
Today I remembered some Glare Control Window Film we bought and put on some windows to cut down on sunlight coming in & heating up the house in the summer. We had some leftovers so I cut two pieces to cover both the larger screen tv in the living room and my smaller tv in the bedroom.
The color I used is Bronze and it stays on with static cling. You just peel it off whenever you don't want or need it anymore. It looks really dark but the tv picture looks really good with it on and I don't have to wear my sunglasses to watch tv now.
Hopefully you won't have as bad of a problem with light as I am having but if you do this might help. -

Need advice on correcting credit report~
by FlyingHighNow ini never checked mine until the other day.
i only looked at equifax.
i saw there are things on there from many years ago that have long been paid.

Here's a website that should help - www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/edcams/credit/ycr_free_reports.htm
Read that info then you can order your free reports. There is only a cost if you request your credit score. The credit score will cost about $5.00 from each.
Notice the line across the top of the ftc screen that says, "Home For Consumers For Business ..."
Click on the 'For Consumers' and then see the box in the center top that says Categories. You can pull up many free brochures that provide lots of info on credit reports, etc. I think you said your computer is not too fast so you can order free copies from FTC.
Any good credit history you have (including closed/paid accounts) you want to stay on your credit report. Don't ask them to remove any good credit history. Any bankruptcy will stay on for 10 years and any derogatory credit history will stay on for 7 years.
A side note: Just because a bad loan may drop off your report after 7 years does not mean the history no longer exists. For example, suppose someone had a loan with say Bank XYZ and never paid them. XYZ is required to drop the derogatory reporting to the credit bureaus after 7 years BUT there is nothing that requires them to delete it from their own business records. The bank may not give that person a loan in the future from their own history with that consumer. -
