Francois,
it's okay to have a sense of humor and an appreciation for the larger point you were making. I understand your point, I assure you it wasn't missed.

Confession.
by detective init occurred to me that perhaps one of the differences between a catholic confession(s) and a jw confession before an elder(s)is that the priest tries to figure out what's appropriate for forgiveness, whereas the elder(s) try to figure out what's appropriate for punishment.
forgiveness versus punishment.
would you say that's a relatively accurate assessment?.

Fire Dragon, I see your point. I hadn't thought about it that way exactly.
Of course, it still seems as though there is an assumption of sthe confessor's sincerity on the part of the priest in Catholic confession that doesn't seem to exist among elders in JW confession. Perhaps it is the fact that confession isn't mandatory in the Catholic church but JWdom seems to speak more of a police state where you will confess and be punished or be caught and be punished. Punishment seeming to be the focus.
Zanex, I wasn't sure if male witnesses experienced the same sort of grilling for details but I guess at least one has experienced it. Any others?

Winning Oscar Means Disgracing Yourself
by Spartacus inat least denzel washington came forth to say that his role in "training day" was a character to which he immensely hated portraying, and it was very difficult for him to act out the role of a villian in a character he just loathed to the core.
halle berry on the other hand, as shown by her response is extremely over joyful for the winning of best actress in "monsters ball".
" the 33-year-old actress, a former beauty queen, glamerized herself for her role in "monsters ball" as a dispirited waitress and mother who falls in love with a white prison guard who she doesn't know has helped put her husband in the electric chair.".

The number of ‘firsts’ that Sidney Poitier accumulated is the primary reason that he is considered to be such a great pioneer. He was the first black actor to be nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award (1958 ‘The Defiant Ones’), and was the first black actor to win that award (1963 ‘Lilies On the Field’). He also became the first black number one box office star in 1967, after the release of ‘Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner?’
The article that Spartacus posted does seem highly biased. Poitier played a range of "respectable" characters and Farah Fawcett would be an example of a beauty queen playing down her looks to be a troubled, abused person in the burning bed. It just seems as if the author didn't really think out their argument or they would have realized the flaws in their reasoning.

Trevor and the 1% Armageddon
by Duncan inwhats the central belief of jehovahs witnesses?
the very core of the religion?.
some people, alanf for example, have at times suggested that it is nothing more or less than we (wtbts) speak for god .

Wouldn't it just about kill the fun if only 1% of humanity perished? I mean, there's nothing special about being among the surviving 99% of humanity! And it's about being special, isn't it?
You'd have to turn to evil just to have a special mission in life! Bummer.
Good post, duncan.

Another question- a more personal one- since I've not been before a judicial committee, I'd like to ask those who have if it is common for men to be probed for details of sexual exploits. I know that many women complain of this but do the men usually go through the same type of grilling down to specific details?

THE KORAN
by U.2.K. inanybody else besides me, read the koran?
it's alright, did'nt pay that much attention to it.. but i read it, and one thing i notice is that, it dont have no hope for the future... they just talk about dying and going to heaven... again they fail to understand that, god did not make the earth for nothing, seems like millions are ignoring revelation 21-1 & 2peter 3-13... if everybody goes to heaven, which some people call the afterlife(lol) did what's the point of the resurrection, and as it is written in the bible, if christ rise, so shall the dead, when they hear his voice after judgement day .
the koran also said, that adam & eve was in paradise at the beginning, not on earth, but heaven, which is not true, god made adam from the ground=earth... .

So if I understand you correctly, you are discrediting the koran by using the bible. Okey dokey.

Modesty in Dress and Grooming - May KM
by expatbrit inok you slutty and independent slobs, pay attention.
how many instances of loaded language and mind-control techniques can you spot in the following article from the may 2002 km?
whoever gets the most wins a brown suit from goodwill.. modesty in dress and grooming- km may 2002.

Alright expatbrit, let's give this a go...
There is not a pair of jeans or an open collar to be seen. Everyone here is radiant." So said a news report.
Ah, a "news report". Not that I don't believe someone would say such a thing, but how am I to confirm this assertion? References?...At another convention city, a newspaper reporter gave this description of the crowd of Witnesses:
A second observer, a security guard, noted: "You are well-behaved, respectful, clean, and tidy people. What I see is beautiful. In this filthy world, you managed to move aside the dirt!"
Security guard= alleged authority figure? Gotta love it when Mr.Sevenbucksanhour waxes poetic about the "filthy world". Are we supposed to believe that he randomly made mention of some of the groups loaded language? We have become known worldwide for being distinctly different in our appearance.
Hyperbole mixed with wishful thinking. Ask anyone what religious groups are known or stand apart for their dress. Here in the U.S., you might hear Krishnas or Amish or monks or certain branches of Judiasm. Reality check. What are the chances anyone would even mention the JWs?Rather than choose a look that flaunts an independent spirit or that suggests an immoral life-style, we want to show that we truly "glorify God."
Whatever you do, blend in. Conformity demonstrates loyalty to the group. At times, one who is new, inexperienced, or spiritually weak might accept whatever the world promotes in dress and grooming without first considering how it reflects on Jehovah and his organization.
Don't ruin our image. If someone is not demonstrating conformity, they are weak. We don't want them ruining or image, do we?We could approach a respected, spiritually mature brother or sister and ask for an honest observation about our style of clothing and grooming and then seriously weigh the suggestions given.
Always check with others to make sure you are conforming. You will know who to ask because they demonstrate by their dress that they are conforming and are therefore spiritual people. -

preventing baptism of minors
by og inhere is the situation: my wife is a very faithful true believer (and a wonderful person, i will add, who really wants to do what's right) i have been da'd about a year, and we have 2 children.
our oldest is 13, and really buys into the witness line ( as, of course, i professed to until last summer) and i am fairly sure she is considering baptism.
here is my question: as one half of her parents, is there any legal doctrine that would allow me to prevent her baptism until she is 18?
-
detective
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the baptism questions online? I'd like some additional details on this baptism thang (jw-style). Any websites or scans?
Og, I'm sorry you are going through tough stuff. I'm with you though, I believe you should tell your daughter that when she is eighteen she can go ahead with it if she chooses. If you end up looking like the bad guy, it probably won't matter in ten years when she's out and thanking you for it. And... from what I understand, it's likely she WILL get out eventually if this trend of young people leaving has any merit to it. I'll bet it does.
