  I don't see that you need "help," necessarily.

  Sure, God isn't a trinity. Cool. Lots of people who believe in God believe he isn't a trinity.

  Lots of people in lots of religions don't believe that Jesus is God, either. Cool.

  Is disfellowshipping unscriptural? Probably not. Many horrible, inhumane things are scriptural; shunning may indeed be among them.

  Does Jehovah tolerate immorality? Depends. Sometimes he does, when it's convenient for procreation and so forth. Incest didn't seem to bother him too much when Lot got drunk and slept with his daughters, if memory serves. But then, there's a lot of stuff Jehovah doesn't tolerate. Making fun of bald people, for example. If you're ten years old and you want to point out that a bald man is bald, better set some bear traps first.

  See, some of this stuff just doesn't matter to anyone but you (I mean that in a good way) -- because the sort of "evidence" you're looking for will only be substantiated by faith. You'll make interpretations and come to conclusions and that's your right, but you won't find some scientific, object proof of your beliefs. Hence, faith. So believe whatever you think is best. Just remember that you can't empirically prove that you're right, and that's okay, so long as you don't get arrogant about whatever it is your faith does for you.

  Wow. The Belt. Yeah, I remember stuff like that too.

  There was one time when my father told me to take off my glasses so he could hit me in the face. This got to me, because it meant I couldn't tell myself that he had just "lost his temper" and didn't mean it, like I had before. With that simple request there was intent, which made a difference: he had the presence of mind to save himself the expense of new glasses before administering his "punishment."

  Ugh. You know the big Witness line about administering discipline in love? Once, as he dragged my by my hair across the Kingdom Hall parking lot, I yelled, "I can't believe you're doing this out of love for me." He never responded, really.

  Anyway, yeah. Fathers and religion -- not a good mix. What's the line from To Kill a Mockingbird? "Sometimes the Bible in the hand of one man is worse than a whisky bottle in the hand of [another]."

  Substitute "Watchtower" for "Bible" and you've tailored it nicely for Witnesses.

  Whatever you think of Moore, it was a lot of fun to watch.

  As for the audience and the microphones and what they were and weren't standing for -- just wondering, but isn't this the same audience that gave an absent Roman Polanski a standing ovation for best director? (His movie might be great, and I'll certainly see it sometime, but I wouldn't feel right giving a standing ovation for a man I knew was accused of statutory rape. It's possible to separate art from the artist, in most cases, but in this case, applauding the man on my feet would've been too much.)

  My point, if I have one, is that when Hollywood (of which Moore is part) speaks out politically -- for or against the war or whatever -- it seldom amounts to anything more than entertainment. Whether the audience booed or whooped is immaterial, too -- they're all part of the same glittering, fleeting, somehow amusing pageant.

  Having said that, I really want to see "Bowling for Columbine."

  More casualties of the August 2002 KM

  my father has just become a grandfather for the first time and may never get to see his grandson because my brother has cut off all ties with him.. my best friend was offered a free holiday by his parents so he would be away on the day of his sister's wedding.. and what have these people done to deserve such heinous treatment?

  my father was disfellowshipped for adultery over twenty years ago, my best friend for smoking when he was seventeen.. i'm so mad i can't even put it into words properly.

  i want to scream, i want to lash out at the despicable bastards who instigated this policy, and the snivelling cowards who obey it without question.. but what can i do?

  Dedalus, there are about 20 identifying characteristics defining a cult. Jehovah's Witnesses display each and every one of them. There is a post to that effect back in the threads somewhere and the word "cult" is in the topic. If you really want to get a handle on whether or not JWs constitute a cult, find that thread and read away. You'll become a believer.

  I am already aware of the 20 identifying identifying characteristics of a cult. I don't need to educate myself -- I've rationally reached my own conclusions after carefully considering things you insinuate I'm ignorant of. What's sort of silly about your response is that I was ringing the "they're a cult" bell in my response to FD.

  If you want to send me a private message about this, go ahead. I really don't want to hijack FD's thread with this nonsense.

  This stuff is getting out of control. It reeks of fanaticism. One of my quibbling pet peeves has been the ease with which people label Witnesses a cult -- I don't necessarily think that Witnesses constitute a cult, or that the label has any elucidating meaning when applied to them. But, when I read stuff like what you've written, and look around my own life a bit, the behavior smacks of cultish fanaticism.

  It takes a weak mind and a cold heart to be a Witness -- that, or a religious influence so great it's akin to brainwashing. I just can't see it any other way.

  Kicked out at 17 (just before 18th birthday). Actually knew I'd be kicked out when I said I wasn't going to be a Witness anymore, so I had already moved some of my stuff before I told them. Told my mother that I didn't want to be a Witness, she said "find another place to live," I said that I already had. Went back for the rest of my stuff and, like others in this thread, it was packed in garbage bags. The biggest piece of garbage was the bible my mother slipped in.

  Anyway, I moved back in when I was 19 and became active again and stayed a witness until I was 25 or so. No one can say I didn't give it a shot.

  was the death of jesus for the purpose of god being able to forgive adams sin for all of mankind?

  the truth is that humanity needs the god who created this vast universe -- who is known as allah to many, and jehovah to many, or worshipped under a myriad of other names but indeed is but one -- to eliminate the forces of evil in this world through his son, jesus christ.

  as a matter of fact, the bible promises christ will reign as king on his throne from the heavens for the millennium it shall take to establish world peace.. if you are visiting this site out of curiosity about the beliefs of jehovah's witnesses and have this sinking feeling of dispair in your heart as this world descends into social and economic conflict and chaos, then you should be aware that a higher intelligence is about to intervene and save mankind from extinction.

  that intelligence created this universe and its laws of physics to house intelligent life, and what you simply know as "love" eminated from this intelligence!
