Moral Values of an Atheist

some thoughts spinning through my head .... what does it mean to be an atheist?

it means you cannot imagine your homosexual neighbor being slaughtered by a loving god at judgment's day, it means you don't consider the primitive tribe described in numbers 31 that slew midianite men and raped innocent virgins to be god's first covenant people, it means you don't believe mankind is so perverted that it is in need of salvation through a man who came 'not with peace, but with a sword', it means you have high moral values that apply not only to the members of your denomination but to all men.. h. .

Most agree the 'Golden rule' is a good moral law. I think that these concepts and beliefs have been imprinted on us by our backgrounds, and that our internal constructs of good are not independent of our Christian background and culture. I think claiming to be part of a group that is more moral than Christians would discredit the source of your morals.

The golden rule is in fact just one of many versions of the 'Ethic of Reciprocity'

It's not unique to Jesus, Christians, or the Bible.

Here's another version: " This is the sum of Dharma (duty / righteousness) : do not do to others what would cause pain if done to you. " ~ Mahabharata - Around 500 B.C

Christians are most definately not the source.

But what if someone else, even another atheist, disagrees with your view of what is 'the right thing'?What would make your view of 'the right thing' better than someone else's view?

I doubt there's a blanket response to that question. It would have to be answered on a case-by-case basis. If you'd be willing to provide an example of a moral dilemma, that would probably help.

I expect most people here get their morality from the society they live in. I expect most people here live in a society who's morals are strongly influenced by Judeo-Christian thought.

Again, I think you might need to provide an example.

Why believe god?

I guess that's the big difference between you and me. I don't trust people unless I have a reason too. There are varying levels of trust. Although we've never met, if you say you have five bucks and a ball of lint in your pocket, I'll probably trust you. But if you say that you have a million bucks and a gold nugget in your pocket, I won't believe you. Maybe, if I got to know you, and found out that your rich. I might believe you. So if some spirit entity claims that he's pretty smart, and can defy gravity and stuff, I might believe him right off the bat. It doesn't really contradict my view of reality. But if some spirit entity claims that he's omnibenevolent, omnipotent, and omniscient, I'm not going to trust him unless he gives me some darn good evidence. Because that violates pretty much everything I know about the world. Lore - W.W.S.D?

what you call foolishness is wisdom to us. you wisdom is foolishness to us. cause see you can talk about the world and all of its proof and knowledge all day long but we serve the God that made it all. He is an awesome God

by the very nature of religious faith, you don't NEED to think about it. You just gotta believe.
Seeing as this is true, why does it bother you?

It's bad for families.

Bad for science.

Bad for the economy.

Bad for peace.

When people willingly cease thinking, it's just downright bad for everybody.

So then, if people do not believe in YOUR way of thinking, they are not using their brains?

No, If they cannot confront questions about their beliefs, then they are not using their brains.

Ask me a question about philosophy, evolution, the big bang, abiogenesis, germ theory, carbon dating, whatever, I'll do my best to answer it. Or admit: "I don't know" (And then continue to do research on it.)

I will NOT say: "You just gotta have faith in science." or "I trust science and that's good enough for me." or "That question is evil."

I've met smart theists, like Vinny, who could actually answer questions instead of avoiding them. I disagree with him, but I would never claim that he's not using his brain.
The problem is, they are few and far between, by the very nature of religious faith, you don't NEED to think about it. You just gotta believe.

Wow! TV is stupid!

i sat down to watch some tv today... our tv only pick up 3 channels.. and stuff worth watching is few and far between.

it's amazing how much mindless drivel is being broadcasted.. .

deal or no deal: where an overactive lunatic runs around the stage hyperventilating, while simultaniously showing off his/her amazing random-number-generator skills by choosing completely arbitrary numbers and winning money for it.

Martin Yan's China – great stuff; today they showed a sidewalk vendor making sugar candy in the shape of assorted animals. The techniques were almost identical to glassblowing - but smaller scale and lower temperatures :)

Those are all good. I've never seen ImageMakers.

Unfortunately I don't think my TV gets any of those. (You get what you pay for I guess.)

I used to like PBS, they would only beg for money once a year for a month. But now it's practically every other month. And they play commercials now anyway! (They just do it in between shows instead of during them. Meaning you have to put up with commercials, but you don't get to use them as a bathroom break.) When they actually play programs they're pretty good. I like Nova, Mystery ! and Masterpiece theatre.

Commercials are another huge problem with TV. It makes sense to have commercials on public stations, but if you're PAYING for cable, you shouldn't have to deal with commercials. The internet definitely has 1up on TV in that way.
