  it's too damn cold for my liking!

  all the people that have real winters will laugh, but mid 30's to lower 40's is despicably cold by oregon standards .

  to make things that much better, the furnace in the house where i live died on monday.

  D, it was fantastic! Nothing like a good bit of Laphroiag 10 yr (best they had) and some seriously fantastic music. I took a couple of poor quality cell phone clips of the gig and a couple of pics that I've uploaded to my myspace. I had to switch to beer once the party took off in ernest. I never dance, but was damn close last night, these guys brought a fantastic energy to their music and one couldn't help but have a good time. Of course the kilted drummer was a bonus :D

  Orphan or Alternative Thanksgiving Plans?

  so, like many of us, i find myself sans family for the holidays.

  i'm only on speaking terms with my sisters, one cousin, an aunt and an uncle.

  my sisters are several hours drive away and i have to work friday (grrr).

  Ok kids, a few things.

  Part of why I brought this up is that my oldest and dearest friend in Oregon said he usually throws an orphan Thansgiving dinner.I thought it was kind of a cool idea, but don't really feel like throwing one together myself (I'm a lazy bastard). Plus it makes for a mildly interesting topic :D

  Secondly, I have plans fairly well figured out.

  Tonight I'm going to a local bar for some interesting music (not my usual metal flavor) accompannied by some fantastic friends, Scotch and a pint or 2 or 5.

  Tomorrow, sleep in. . . . .oh, and do some laundry before going to the sports bar for football and homemade Greek Thansgiving dinner *drooool* (love the people I meet, I gotta tell ya).

  Friday, work but likely for half a day or so. Then I'm thinking of catching The Dwarves (old punk) show in town and possible tearing up downtown Portland, or I'll come back to my neighborhood and hang with some friends. Either way much fun shall be had.

  The rest of the weekend is open. I owe my sisters both a phone call So that'll be in there somewhere along with general mischief making

  . They let me out early (3:45 vs 5:00) I ran away and didn't look back. On my way home I stopped at Fred Meyer and grabbed a space heater for $20 just to be safe. I was pleasantly suprised when I walked into my house and it was a pleasant 60F I nice hot shower and a bowl or 2 and I'm doing quite well Later on tonight I'm going to check out some "irish music 'that rocks'" with a couple friends. I'll be sure to have a Scotch (totally have Scotch on the brain now) and toast you from afar D I'll post back with the results

  Oddly enough, I actually had thought of picking up some Scotch earlier today (there's a liquor store 1 block from work). Maybe a Scotch or two and a $20 space heater will be just the thing

  So, like many of us, I find myself sans family for the holidays. I'm only on speaking terms with my sisters, one cousin, an aunt and an uncle. My sisters are several hours drive away and I have to work Friday (grrr). The aunt, uncle and cousin are closer but we're not really close or family-like that way. So, I officially have no plans. After 11+ years out you'd think I'd be used to it by now. When I was married, I was always involved with my partners family traditions and got to experience the holidays that way. At the time I can't say I was always stoked, but now that it's not there I feel a little jilted.

  So, rather than participate in one of my usual distractions, I thought I would see what the other sans-family folks had going on. I'd love to hear what you have planned or will be doing and whatever ideas anyone would like to throw my way.

  ps - I'm not overly sad or mopey, just unsure what to do with myself

  I think you are able to deduct the days without heat off your monthly rent.

  Not a bad idea! Any clue where I would be able to find the law on that one?

  Hope your heat gets fixed soon. I'd keep calling her, middle of the cold night, too, until it's fixed.

  Me too! She actually lives on the property (carriage house sorta thing) so it's not like she's out of town. I'm not too worried about it, but will be if it's not fixed today. I'll send the other angry roomies after her

  I feel ya liquidsky. I live in an old 1920's house in SE Portland. It's definitely not a "super good sense home" by a long shot. It's been cold the last several mornings and cool all the time since the weather changed. before the furnace died we had a slightly warmer place than the outdoors. As of last night I'm pretty sure the house is colder than the outdoors (I saw my breath in the living room).

  My saving grace is my Temperpedic mattress, the foam holds body heat like nobodies business. So it's colder than cold (again, by Oregon standards) but I'm toasty warm with just two blankets. I actually took today's clothes to bed with me last nite so I wouldn't have to freeze this morning.

  To make things that much better, the furnace in the house where I live died on Monday. The landlady being the highly motivated person she is, there's still no heat So, it looks like yours truly will be buying a space heater and some good booze for Thanksgiving.
