Seems I remember there was an article written after the 1946 Assembly that was published in Collier's (and later abridged for Reader's Digest) entitled: "Jehovah's Traveling Salesman." It has been so long ago that I saw it that I can't say anything about the quality of the article. Perhaps some here know about it?

Armageddon, Inc (1940) - The last critical article there was on JWs!
by VM44 in"armageddon, inc" was an article published in the september 14, 1940 issue of the saturday evening post.. it was written by stanley high and was a critical review of the jehovah's witness religion as it was then.. this was 65 years ago, and i do not know of _any_ articles since then that have been published in a major magazine that attempt to analyze or examine the jehovah's witnesses!.
there have been many articles published over the years about jws, particularly when conventions are being held in a town.
the local papers will usually do stories about them.

or is it just down for advanced maintenance.

I've been wondering myself what's going on.
However, you can still read the files from it's associated reexamine.info site. As for example, Watchtower publications from the 1920s at:
http://www.reexamine.info/20s/
For any other decade change the 20 to whatever decade you want.
I'd say some sort of maintenance is going on.

Reminds me of the "resistance" shown by some of us at Wallkill when Phil Wilcox told us it was wrong of us to take magazines being printed on the presses into the restrooms to read. These had not been released to the Bethel family yet and we wanted to see what was new in the magazines. (This was in 1975.) Wilcox cited the need for confidentiality but I think the real reason was their concern we might take too long in the restroom while we would read these unleased magazines.
Soon afterwards, I went into the can and thought I noticed something behind the tank. Sure enough, rolled up and stuffed behind the tank, but barely visible, was the latest Watchtower that was just starting to go through the presses. What did I do? I scanned it real quick and then rolled it back up and put it back in the same hiding place for the next curious reader. Such subterfuge reminded me of some of the stories we heard about JWs in countries where there was persecution! So we never lacked "spiritual refreshment" while we took care of our mundane business.

My memories are from 73-75 in Brooklyn and until 76 at WT Farm.
I thought the food was good. Not like a fancy restaurant but kind of like eating at a good buffet.
Some memories: when we had fish it usually was on Friday. Perhaps that had something to do with purchasing? Was the secular food market geared to offer cheaper prices for fish for Friday consumption? Don't know...but we used to wonder about that.
When we had baked fish we called it "faked bish."
When we had hamburger gravy at breakfast we called it "gravy train." (I actually liked it!)
We would call "shirred eggs" (baked in a dish) "vulcanized eggs." (I did NOT like those!)
The lowest turn out for the noon dinner meal was for liver and onions. The best dinners were held for Gilead graduation and usually included standing rib roast. It felt very much like Thanksgiving or Christmas. We usually got some extra time off for the noon meal.
It was at Bethel that I learned to eat grits. Not too bad if you put some butter in them (or jelly!)
On Sunday mornings they had cheese out for you to make sandwiches. There were often prunes, too. Kind of like poison and antidote. Cheese to clog you up and prunes to get you going again.
I did not like that there was no dinner on Sundays, however. Guess the guys in the kitchen did need the day off. I just got tired of those sandwiches!

OK believers, time to put up or shut up...
by Gregor inapparently, a large percentage of xjw's who post on this site have embraced some other form of god/jesus belief to replace the wt doctrine.
most of them fall into the "i accept the lord jesus christ as my personal savior" class.
they are still extremely attached to the old "forgiveness of sin through the shed blood of jc" line.

Some have brought up the idea of judgement.I found a lot to think about in the following essay entitled "The River of Fire":
http://www.philthompson.net/pages/library/riveroffire.html
While I disagree with some of its caricatures of Western Christian theology...even though I'm an Eastern Christian myself...I found some of the thoughts in the article extremely well made. Personally, I believe that some of the ideas in it can be adapted to other Christian theologies than just the author's.
Peace,

Gregor,
Your question presupposes that the only real existence is the one we have here. If that were the case, you're spot on.
I am convinced there is much more than this life and that my dear friends and family (and other's dear friends and family) who have died understand these things much more than we can.
Peace,

I'm also an ex-Californian. Grew up in Garden Grove and went to GG East Cong from about 1966-1971. I was a teenage JW and remember the weekly WT studies on Mon nights that all the kids went to and various other teenage events. I've been out since 1980 but wonder if any others here are from that era?
