In my own case, mom says that she and dad were listening to some Frank Sinatra, and then later smoked a luck strike.

How did you get out of sitting through the Convention?
by Confucious in.
someone else wrote a good thread about the naughtiest thing you've ever done at a convention.. ok... what did you do to "legally" get out of your chair?.
for me, it was easy, because i got to volunteer at some desk so i had 'permission' to be walking around in the hallways.

To really rule, volunteer to be an "attendant".
If you can graduate to a "management position" you will then be given a hand-held communication device and told to watch out for streakers and other dangerous anti-social disruptives.
you can then BS on the walkie-talkie with hottie babe alerts to the other bored to death attendants. Feel free to create your own grading system and code words. You will also be practically as important to yourself as a 7th grade Jr. Cop doing crossing guard duty at the Jr. High.
Worked for me...for a while, until I had a good look in the mirror...

"No fear" t shirts, forbidden???
by free2beme inin the 1990's there were a lot of things that had the saying "no fear" on it and one of the local elders figured out that this meant we live life and do things without fear.
so that basically we could try things and take chances, without the normal fear we associate with things in life.
well in a special needs talk they decided that "no fear" t shirts should not be worn by good witnesses and they asked that we not wear them to witness gatherings, or even in life.

Well, it really belongs on that old thread "what was the stupidest thing you ever got counseled for" - but in the lost old days there was a snow-ski t-shirt which held forth:
NO GUTS NO GLORY
Guess who got called in on the carpet for that one?
Guess who commissioned a new one which said
I BUSTED MY ASS AT WOLF CREEK PASS

What are your reasons for not joining another religion?
by MARTINLEYSHON ini am going to start this debate of by saying that those of us who were raised in the so called truth, and i being one of them, can only come to terms with our past by accepting that our parents infected our minds like a virus infects a computer.
we wouldn't categorise children according to their parents' political stance, since they are too young to make up their minds about such matters.
but they (jw) segregate them from the world.

It has been said that a lot of people would not even go into the front door of many 4-star restaurants, let alone pay $125 a plate, if they ever had to work in the kitchen there.
I know that as a college kid, when I worked service & repair on electronic musical instruments and stereos I lost interest in that sort of thing as a recreational hobby. Same for computers now that I am a software development engineer - we only have an old Mac in the house.
I think a lot of ex-witnesses are like this...we had to examine a religion (and the whole notion of religion in general) so up close and personal to make the exit that it is now a lot easier to see the faults of other churches. No matter how well-meaning such churches might be. There are some disturbing similaraties to them all.
I tried going back to Presbyterian a couple of times, but I guess I just wasn't predestined to continue with it. Or, maybe my lifetime innoculation for this disease was kicking in...

Finding Jehovahs Witnesses Faith
by Marvin Shilmer infinding jehovahs witnesses faith.
i have a question for serious participants of this forum: .
what do you deem the most reliable means for determining the various convictions held by the population of jehovahs witnesses in terms of the range of what individuals within that group consider as core tenets of their faith?.

I am also fascinated (but maybe a little confused), Marvin.
You allude to having data from medical studies on JW in blood peril that indicates they deviate at least to some extant from society teachings. This is, of course, fascinating stuff. And, something I have always suspected. It also has the authenticity of coming from someone other than the watchtower's spin engines.
However, I have one question with it - are we getting a sample of the average rank-and-file belief on this subject, or is this the reactionary behaviour of those who are put to the test in a blood emergency? Are they truly equivalent?
I guess I am saying - isn't it possible that a lot of witnesses intenally believe that blood is kind of wrong because of the brainwash, but cannot live their faith when it comes down to the event. In that case, we may not be getting a sample of belief.
Another statistic like this which should be available from the outside would be the tendency to avoid prison over the draft issue in the days of compulsory non-military service. Did they run away to Canada, baby out, hide in college, or go do their time in club fed like good dubs?
No athiests in the foxholes, eh?

I think this may have come from "Star Trek - the Next Generation". Borg were half man - half robot (cyborgs) and went about subdueing the universe while intoning "resistance is futile. you must be assimilated".
They were not at all good about thinking for themselves.

Maybe if you could form a sort of "network" of faders who are still current attendees, you could ask them to do a little "sample study"...i.e. - informally asking stuff like:
"Did you go along readily with the Generation Teaching (notice that it does not ask if you agree with it...). Did you kind of have a feeling that this would eventually have to be done?, etc..."
Maybe this could be done for the really core things like blood, armageddon, 1975, NGO, etc.
The precaution would have to be made not to do this very obviously or all at once. The data seekers would have to use judgement to get a reality cross section; not just hardliners, liberals, other faders, elders, etc...
Obviously, such a thing would have to be carefully constructed according to rules of statistical survey to have any validity. Maybe there is someone here on the board with a good statistical background...I think I know of at least one.
Then it would be up to those brave volunteer faders.

After all, I do have a manifesto!
Seriously, I had assumed this was an english group and they might not believe someone from Dallas.
But, you do make a point - some people might think twice about even turning them in to aboid looking crazy.

This couldn't be counted as field service.
--- LOL, but I beg to differ... I have such much more obtuse goings on than this rant counted as field service.
I do marvel at what other possible purpose there could be here other than gratuitous entertainment.
