I ran my mouth at the meeting (again) when I was seven. My dad was the Presiding Overseer. He decided to take me outside for a good spanking and I knew it. As he threw mw over his shoulder and carried me towards the back, I kicked my little legs and screeched, "No, help me! Somebody save me, he's going to beat me again! Help!" My dad was so embar-assed as the whole Hall turned around to watch. We got outside and he couldn't do anything so we went back in. My Grandma was in one of the rows and she didn't like him anyway, so I won that round!

What's with my Mom and the NWT?
by Ingenuous inbefore i left the org, i decided to start doing my personal bible reading in a translation other than the nwt.
my mother seemed bothered by this, wanting to know why i didn't want to use the nwt, describing why she greatly preferred it to other translations, and generally adopting a worried look whenever i mentioned the topic.
i talked to her this morning and she turned the conversation into a q&a session on a bible i was looking for in a local bookstore.

They assume the rank and file are rather simple minded. The NWT is condescendingly presented as "in plain English and easy to understand." That's also the selling point to new studies. Why try to wade through all those other Bibles, with archaic English, like the King James version, when the faithful and Discreet Slave has lovingly provided us a simplified version in today's modern English? Seems like almost everybody finds this a reasonable argument and looks no further. Allegations about adding to, removing, or slanting the meaning are written off as lies, all lies!

Do You Still *Look* Like A Jehovah's Witness?
by minimus inwould someone still mistake you for a witness?

Isn't it funny how some of us still have some JW in us? I am a Supervisor at work, who represents the company to the public, and am friends with another ex-jw lady. I do wear skirts sometimes and I'm always saying, "C, ya gotta tell me if I ever look like I'm dressed for the Witlessing work!" Off duty, I've got a naval ring, 3 earrings per ear and my husband says I dress like a tart, lol! It just seems like I revert to the modest look for work without realizing it; knee length dresses, modest heels, sweater, etc. Ohmigod! What if my large black leather handbag could be mistaken for a Witlessing bag??

Is Jehovah really gods name?
by dezpbem inin another thread i started someone askedi still believe in jehovah, but now, i'm having doubts about his name???
is jehovah really god's name?
if he wanted his name to be known, he's all-powerful, omnipotent... i know that he has the power to make sure that his name is used correctly.

Good one, Sherri! Yeah, why does God have to be a "He?" Anyways, I feel there is a more solid documentation for "Yahweh" but "Jehovah" seems a bit thin and JW created. Just my opinion, and I do sincerely want to use the right name. Seems to me there's more proof for "Yahweh."

"The friends" came over today.............
by gringojj ini am so sick of witnesses reserving catchphrases for themselves.. talking to my wifes mother today she kept referring to "the friends".
"the friends came over today, we went to lunch with the friends".
well if they are "the friends", then what the hell are everyone else?

I keep hearing the phrase"our people." Example: "Our people" really provided for one another during Katrina. The new hospital takes care of bloodless surgeries for"our people" here in Chicago". "Our people know the end is approaching very soon." Bla-bla.

My so-called life
by riko inhello everyone..i just wanted to introduce myself and tell you a little bit about my experiences.. i'm 23, have been raised in the truth all my life.
when i was 18, i made a foolish decision to get married, something i knew deep down i wasn't ready for, still being very much in the 'bloom of youth'.
i reluctantly saw my future as being one of jehovahs witnesses and with all my adolescent drives, i moved away from home to marry a man with about the same maturity as me.

Riko,
So nice to have you here! I was an elder's only child and expected to set the example at the Hall with perfect dress, behavior, commenting, etc. All very stressful to be such a goody-goody, and the other kids didn't like me much. I became quiet and a loner. The neighbor kids were lots of fun, but I could only play with them a little bit because they were worldly. I totally understand what you mean by having trouble making friends and ever feeling comfortable with people. If you don't get to learn to be sociable as a child, it's tough later on, isn't it?
This group uplifts me so much, even if I just lurk and read, I always feel so good knowing other people went thru the same things and really understand! Please stick around!

Have I been red flagged?
by searching4? ini find it very weird that in 13 years, not one jw has come knocking on my door.
i don't live in my home town and have had no contact with witnesses ( besides my mom) since i was disfellowshipped in 1992. is it possible that my mom ( still a witness) has alerted the local kingdom hall and had me placed on the " do not call" list?
or maybe i just live in the area of slacker witnesses?

Well, I think something odd's going on too! I used to see cargroups walking the streets on Saturdays even a few years ago, but seldom see them now. We live in a shady residential neighborhood and I only saw a cargroup once, last summer. My hubby and I work days, yet I have never found a tract or any items left in the door. I used to see them without fail when running errands on weekends, but rarely any more. Does this mean they feel they've reached all the sheep that remain, and their preaching work is done?

What Decisions Did You Make Only Because You Were A Witness?
by minimus ini believe that most jws are deep down inside angry over the fact that they went along with the status quo and the majority just to be accepted.
some witnesses would like to have a tattoo, a mustache, a shaved head, a beard, a new red sportscar, etc.
but they don't because they would be viewed as "immature".

Wasn't allowed to be in the high school band, wanted to learn drums. "No" to Spanish Club after school beacuse of association with worldly kids who are presumed to be rotten. Won a trip to Spain with Spanish class and teachers but wasn't permitted to travel with worldlings. I had to look at their pictures when they came back. Wasn't allowed to accept my Grandpa's offer to pay for my college. My father answered for me, "She doesn't want to attend college; she wants to pioneer." Noboby asked ME what I wanted to do, and I found out about the offer later. Anything I had interest in, or showed talent for, was discouraged so the time could be spent in Bible study. So many Witless kids are forced to stifle their natural talents and grow up, wondering wistfully what they might have been today had they been encouraged to develope them!

The story of my life (part 12- My first committee)
by onacruse ini title this part this way because i was, over the course of the next couple of years, involved with so many committees (one way or another) that, even though i wasn't an elder, i almost felt like one...as subsequent parts will show.. in any case, it was inevitable that my smoking would be found out.
to his credit, the brother that approached me did as the bible says he should do: he approached me privately, inviting me to voluntarily broach my error with an elder.
of course, as much as i respected, and still have no reason to disrespect, this friend, there was the clearly implicit threat that "if you don't, i will have to.".
