Falling Asleep at Assemblies
by LouBelle inyes i have dozed off many times when i used to attend.
most of the time kept the shades on as we used to have outside assemblies.
the thing was not to slide off the chair, drop your head forward or snore.. i've seen some brothers/sister hitting a serious lean to the left or right as they slept and then they'd jerk awake, only to lean again.. some people had sneaky methods.

We bought a video camera with an amazing zoom function just before the summer convention one year. The kids were just entering their teens, and bored stiff at assemblies. So we spent the afternoon session one day zooming in on people on the other side of the stadium, and when we found someone from our congregation sleeping or picking their nose or *gasp!* not looking up the scriptures, we zooomed in and video taped them!
I should look for that tape!

I Do Not Understand Why JWs Leave & Become Catholics!
by minimus inout of all religions, catholicism, to me, is wrong and clearly could never be the truth.

Isn't religion supposed to be about serving God? And so someone who wants to serve God will want to find the religion that tells him that WE, and we alone, have the one PERFECT path to God.
The RCC does acknowledge that other Christians are their 'brothers', but not so much so that their 'brothers' from other Christian churches can, for example, share the Eucharest with them. And if one is to live their life closely following Catholic law/rules/beliefs, then they could not marry a non-Catholic; never miss Sunday Mass intentionally; never have sex with anyone other than their Catholic mate, and then never use contreception; never ever divorce their Catholic mate, not even for adultry, and never be free to marry again until that mate dies; and the list goes on and on.
Of course, if you have joined (or been born into) the Catholic religion and believe that it is, in fact, the way that God wants to be worshipped, (religion is supposed to be about serving God, remember?), then you have no choice but to follow all of the Catholic rules to the letter. Will anyone condemn you if you don't? No - but if you're a true believer, then you'd condemn yourself because you believe the Catholic teaching that not obeying the Church will land you in hell.
I have more I could say but I have to go to the meeting. (JUST KIDDING!!!)

Dispelling Watchtower Myths of RC Beliefs
by Amazing inover the last two years, as i moved back to the catholic church, i have been confronted with objections by several people regarding certain catholic teachings.
these concerns are almost always the same, and are founded in mythology created by the watchtower society, and some evangelical denominations.
god can and does use fallible men to do infallible things?

I agree, MJ. For example, see the link below:
http://www.catholic.com/thisrock/2003/0301fea3sb1.asp
Pius IX on Mary From our earliest years nothing has ever been closer to our heart than devotion—filial, profound, and wholehearted—to the most blessed Virgin Mary. Always have we endeavored to do everything that would redound to the greater glory of the Blessed Virgin, promote her honor, and encourage devotion to her. . . . Great indeed is our trust in Mary. The resplendent glory of her merits, far exceeding all the choirs of angels, elevates her to the very steps of the throne of God. Her foot has crushed the head of Satan. Set up between Christ and his Church, Mary, ever lovable and full of grace, always has delivered the Christian people from their greatest calamities and from the snares and assaults of all their enemies, ever rescuing them from ruin. . . . The foundation of all our confidence, as you know well, venerable brethren, is found in the Blessed Virgin Mary. For God has committed to Mary the treasury of all good things, in order that everyone may know that through her are obtained every hope, every grace, and all salvation. For this is his will, that we obtain everything through Mary.—Pope Pius IX, Ubi Primum (February 2, 1849)

I'm a cradle Catholic who returned to Catholicism for a short time after leaving the JWs. I studied Catholicism in depth before rejecting it.
Re: hell. Hell is absolutely taught to be a place of eternal torture, 'physical' torture, as well as seperation from God. Catholics are taught that one 'chooses' hell themselves by their actions. However, commiting a "mortal sin" without receiving absolution from a Catholic priest before one dies, lands one in hell. An example of a mortal sin would be missing Sunday mass on purpose, ie, without being ill or forgetting it was Sunday. If you die before you confess that mortal sin and receive absolution, you are sent to hell to be tortured forever. Catholics can try to sugarcoat it all they want, but that's what the Catecism states.
From my study of religion in general, and Catholicism in particular, I have come to the conclusion that most people who feel a need to worship God as a member of some form of organized religion do so because of an emotional/psychological componant of their personalities. I'm not saying that they are inferior to someone who does not need religion - just different. Something within them needs the validation of a religion to tell them that they are "right" and that God approves of them more than someone else. It's difficult to use common sense when you have to check the catecism first.
I have the utmost respect for Tom Cabeen. He is a scholar who has been publicly honest about his beliefs throughout his journey out of the WT. Maybe this is just a phase . But I'm still planning to watch the EWTN show :)
