this is a very important observation, that the watchtower has not tried to explain in print why 607 bce is the year for the destruction of jerusalem for the last 17 years!!!.
all that the watchtower has done over most of the last two decades is to repeat over and over the year "607bce" in its publications as if it is an unquestioned fact!.
the last time an explaination for the year was attempted by the watchtower was in 1988 when the "insight" volumes were published, but since then, no explaination for the validity of the year has appeared in print.. this must mean something, but what?

having had a barely adequate education, i knew a lot of the names of the father's cited therein but had never really read anything they wrote.

I saw that happen once, actually. A perfectly normal, healthy guy, fell in love with a girl in our congregation. There was absolutely nooo activity from the neck up on that girl (the plane was airborne, but there waas noone at the wheel, so to speak), but she sure was pretty. And the guy eventually turned into the most brainwashed, hardcore JW I ever saw.

I have no problem with God killing a lot of people. In fact, I wouldn`t mind doing some secretary work for him, like writing down the hitlist. But the idea that God would kill children, is ludicrous. What kind of loving God would do something like that? Children are the future, the hope. They`ve done nothing wrong, as it is per definition impossible for a small child to do something wrong/immoral. Children are in an amoral state, the ability to distinguish between right and wrong is an ability that grows with age. I`m not exactly a christian (at least not every day, ha ha), but if there is a God, I`m sure he/she/it is a sensible, smart being, and would only kill/fry in hell, or whatever the deal is, those that deserve it, and if he/she/it exists, those stories in the OT where he kills of a lot of people, must have been exaggerated by the narrators. I assume Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Hitler, Stalin, and the governing body at the WTbts are on that hitlist. Along with a whole lot of other people. Gimme a call God, and I`ll help you fill out the rest of the list.

DonTomas, for Gods sake, with the intelligence you obviously have, in light of your good questions, do not continue your study with that elder! Kid - A gave you some good answers. There has also been many threads concerning the Trinity. Personally I can`t decide about the Trinity. To sum it up: The JW-view on trinity could be right - but in that case, that`s the only thing they got right! - As they are so ... endlessly... wrong on everything else! ( - the cross vs stake, the ridicolous 607bc-claim, the "day for a year"-crap, 1914, the name of God, the name of God in the NT etc etc etc ad infinitum). i was talking to a mental health professional (don't remember her credentials) about jws.
part of what i couldn't get my brain around was how jws (myself included, when i was "in") can seem to function so well in other areas, but so easily and completely give up their minds to others when it comes to the org.
the behavior seems so irrational and deluded, with so many cognitive distortions at work, that healthy functioning in other areas would appear precluded.
Nicolas and Perry hit it right on the spot. Yes, Orwell was great. I actually like Animal Farm even better than 1984. It was so funny reading it, and even though it was primarily about tyrannic regimes and ideologies, to me, I could see the JW-ism in it too. When the pigs rewrite history, and erase all traces of what the ideology was like before, it`s a bit like the WTbts. Doublethink is an amasing phenomenon. Oh, and I should add, about Folie a deux: When I was younger, the first few years after I left the JW-upbringing, I was involved with some ... alternative people, and there were drugs involved. So once, a couple of buddies of mine was on an acid trip, they wee laying in the grass watching the skies and trees and all, and the funny thing was that they saw the exact same things/visions. Dragons in the skies, the trees turning into monsters, etc. It truly IS possible to share the same visions, although I think some conversation has to be involved.
