I thought it was excellent! Great for the non jw's as well as born in's. When trying to give a quick synopsis of jw's you must include all the crazy date setting and this is helpful. Why include all the crazy dates when discussing the cult with non jw's? well, it in a nutshell it helps to further show how insane the cult really is. Watch someone's face while you give a quick run down on the basics of jw-ism, eyes go wide, mouth drops open, confusion and shaking of the head ensues. Finally they give up trying to understand and say, "hmm, sounds like a cult". There you have it, in a few short minutes the non jw has come to the conclusion that is indeed a cult and they should be wary of them when they come knocking. -

As another Xmas approaches...
by snare&racket ini hope everyone here is well and staying strong x .
another year, another year with no armageddon.. i have noticed the jw pals and family become more frenzied of late, small things in the news wind them up and make them more hysterical than ever.
the events in paris were horrendous, but to a jw they mean the end is near...........why wasn't it near when chechnya was in the shit?

Dont Give Them More Power Than They Deserve
by Tech49 ina new montra that was recently adopted by the wife and i is this:.
dont give them more power than they deserve.. here's why i say that, and i point this to those of you still in the congregation, still trying to decide what you want to do.. recently, our family had a little family reunion gathering of sorts, and we were in the company of some extended family that were either df or da, to varying degrees.
we made it very clear, to any and all in attendance, that we wanted to be respectful and kind, despite any previous perceptions about our "status".... and that our feelings on a lot of things had "softened", and "changed" over the last 2 years.. i am being purposefully slightly vague, but i think you get the point.

I Agree With the Circuit Overseer!!
by The Searcher inwhen i was just studying, the c.o.
was brought to my home for a "visit".. the only thing i can remember from his conversation is this - (and the principle is so true, i'm going to use it).
"searcher, if you're talking to someone about the bible and they don't accept three scriptures as proof about the subject, then don't waste your time trying to give them thirty scriptures, because they clearly don't want to hear the truth.".

How different Christians feel than jw's about trying to convert somebody. I know a Christian friend who was trying to convert a friend from eastern traditions to Christianity, how did this work? they kept at it for years and years, they became great friends. The Christian friend was at his friends bedside when he died. He never gave up trying to tell him about Jesus, not his religion, just Jesus. They had many great conversations and learned much from each other.
Imagine what a loss it would have been if he had the 3 scripture rule?

If they're just going to emulate Jimmy Swaggart and the like (e.g.: JW Broadcasting), why do they need such a massive compound in Warwick?
by Calebs Airplane inthey're obviously getting rid of the rags, drastically reducing printing of books in general, eliminating special pioneers, etc., etc.. ... what could they possibly need a 1.6 million square feet compound for (not including outside space) in the middle of nowhere?.
just to put things into perspective, 1.6 million square feet is equal to the square footage of roughly twelve (12) costco warehouse clubs.
wtf?

jw's like to do things differently as you know, they are working backwards. Most televangelist work their way up, gaining followers and taking the money, often for extravagant lifestyles. The wt on the otherhand is hedging its bets and taking the money from the members who will be leaving them at some point so they will have their extravagant building anyway. Might be nearly empty but the gb will sit in their delusional tower running things, browbeating the diehards while they wait for the big A. -

Why do most Christians churches have masonic and/or pagan symbols?
by kabwell inhas anyone looked at the local churches in their area and seen pagan and freemason symbols both inside and outside.
i am not a jw but at least they don't seem to follow this trend.
why do "christians" wear a symbol of torture and death ?

Oh, you know what my jw would say about you? you are a jw at heart and truly believe but you just don't want to submit and be loyal to jah, you don't have enough discipline and you just don't want to give up your sinful lifestyle (pick any "sin" here).
I'm not saying that, just saying what a typical jw might say.
But welcome to the forum and stick around, there are many interesting folks here.

Welcome to the forum!
Most jw's do have issue with a cross- here is a portion from a previous post from a poster named Saved_JW. You can find the post here- http://www.jehovahs-witness.com/topic/5066993388486656/discussion-pioneer
(You say you are not a jw but your language suggests otherwise, just my opinion, my apologies if that is not correct. Perhaps you have been one in the past?)
From the post about the cross-
"We then went into the subject of the Cross. David raised the objection that the biggest issue he had with Christians is that they "Worship the cross"
This is when I chimed in. I said "David, whenever you have faith involved, there are always symbols representing the object of faith. Take for example the Watchtower. You have a "Symbol" of a Watchtower on that magazine, would it be unfair for me to say that you Worship a watchtower simply because of the symbol?"
...."Well...we don't worship a Watchtower!"
.."I agree, I suspect that this Watchtower Symbol is used to represent keeping on the Watch for Gods Kingdom, in the same way the Cross is for Christians. Its symbolic of Christ Death, burial and resurrection, conquering death and giving salvation to all who believe. Notice that Jesus isn't on the cross, he is absent from it. This is symbolic of his victory over death. So its not the cross we worship at all. Its a symbol of our salvation. Now this is not to say some Christians make a talisman out of an object, to this I would agree that it would be wrong to make this symbol into something its not. But its quite another thing to broad brush every Christian who has a cross as somebody who worships it."
..." Well its still an issue because this was a death instrument, would you wear a symbol of a gun if your best friend was murdered by one?"
.." Ok, the only issue is Christians don't see the cross as a torture device primarily, its a symbol of Atonement, the very place where your sins were paid for. So its a symbol of victory and salvation. Its not murder since Jesus voluntarily went to the cross"-end of quote from post.
By the way, do you or would you wear a wedding ring? did your bride or if you ever get married would you allow the bride to wear a veil? a wedding dress? would you go on a honeymoon? Do you have issue with the days of the week? they are pagan as well, look up how they came to be. Same with the months, those are just a sampling of pagan things. Pagan symbols are all around us on a daily basis that doesn't mean they hold any meaning for people today. Nor should they be thought of as having magical powers or as a tailsman.
I wear a cross but I do not 'worship' a cross, maybe you can tell us what you consider 'worship'? I do not know any Christians who 'worships' a cross and the Catholics I know do not 'worship' crosses either.
