Neither for me too. Look at the R Franz book - in search of christian freedom. It compares a catholic a JW and an adventist & how each are dealt with for apostasy. That tells you the difference very clearly!
I was a baptised adventist for many years. There really is no contest, JWs are 100 times worse.
They just don't claim to have a faithful & discreet slave equivalent & therefor not the same damaging authority structure.
our daughter is 10 and she is in 4th grade.
she has been having a tough time this year with schoolwork and she has started early puberty (boobs, acne, pubic hair, crushes on boys, etc.).
recently, we have been having problems with her lying to us and making up stories/excuses.
Find out what is behind the lies, is it something to do with how we react to the truth? With my kids I try to talk about truth as being so so important. They know I love truthfulness. But that should be put into practice. The praise for truth must be so much greater than the punishment for lies. That sometimes means not reacting too strongly about the bad behaviour confessed. It tends to work for me, but everyone lies sometimes.
i know many have rejected the idea of organized religion.
i teeter on that myself.
but i have toyed with hooking to a little country church with some friendly people to associate with.

Not so sure its good to group all christians, moslems, agnostics etc into headings like the Watchtower does. Aren't they individual people just like atheists?
Yes, some Moslems flew planes into buildings. Some christians did whatever... But some atheists did some bad things too, but I don't judge you based on what some people did. I thought it was just the Watchtower & other similar non-Christian organisations that were so judgmental, and treated people according to a given label rather than who they are as individuals.
You are one of the fortunate ones, in that you've found something to believe in with such certainty.

?, 2005 awakes last page has a review section for families.. i know that technicall it is a good thing, teaching our children and encouraging them to be dubs and all.
but, as a fader, it's features like this and articles on families/child rearing that make a quiet fade difficult.. i like it better when they ignore kids or tell them what they aren't allowed to do.
You get all that with Christian publications too, except more biblical love etc. Love and trust without the hatred and fear,
we all enjoy an interesting discussion.
but, sooner or later it seem inevitable that somebody comes along and throws a monekywrench into the mechanism and the huge engine sputters to a halt.. what do people do in a discussion that ticks you off and stops the flow of conversation and turns it from being productive to unproductive?.
is it as simple as disagreeing with you?.
Nothing really ticks me off unless I'm feeling negative, but that's down to me, not the poster.
What makes me sad is when folks have been hurt by the Watchtower, and they are still feeling negative about it & can't help using the watchtower ways to criticise others. If they hate the watchtower that means watchtower is still controlling them. Easy for me to say & see because I've never been a JW. I've felt the same myself though, but with me it wasn't the watchtower, it was other stuff that had a similar effect. Takes years to beat things like WTS and be truly free of it.

Sorry but I don't believe in any of this. In my view it is all tricks of our own imagination. I believe in good & evil but not demons as the watchtower teaches. Perhaps the biblical Satan was a parable about the dark and sinful side of human nature...

I'm feel a like you do, even though my religion wasn't JW. I was a Catholic then Adventist, then agnostic for many years. Ironically, due to my friend becoming a JW recently, and me seeing the harm it is doing, I have studied WTS & Bible for 6 months, to warn him - its a losing battle for me. In doing so, I have started to understand what was right and wrong with my former religions, both of which were much closer to Christianity than WTS, without any doubt whatsoever. I have also discovered there are many religions that are indeed Christianity, who tolerate many views but share essential truths. Like others here, I am afraid to take a plunge but feel that I am leaning towards Christianity, perhaps I never lost it from my teen years when I was at peace when I believed the following promise:
John 5:24 (NWT) Most truly I say to you, he that hears my word and believes in him that sent me has everlasting life, and he does not come into judgement but has passed over from death to life.
I wonder how the Watchtower explains the above which I believe was addressed to all. Or some of my other favourites as follows:
John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

If you confess with your mouth Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

I was brought up a Catholic & went to a Catholic Grammar School until 17, some of the teachers were priests. In many ways I categorise the Catholic Church & JWs as very smilar doctrinally. Similar but at the same time very different. Catholics only claim pope's infallibility on some very specific areas of consideration, wheras WTS must be obeyed in everything.
I was brought up a Roman Catholic and was taught from the Bible that the Church had Gods authority, and that the Popes was infallible but only when making certain types of ruling about key doctrine, not in normal teaching or congregational issues.
I learned Catholic truth which had the following hallmarks:

i always called it wtbts for watchtower, bible, & tract society.
Which one of the Governing Body famously said:
"we were the Watchtower Tract Society long before we were the Watchtower Bible & Tract Society" ?
No doubt another one of those occasions when the Bible got in the way of Watchtower doctrine. It might have been old Fred Franz but I'm not sure.

i have the sneaking suspicion that these terms each mean something slightly different from one another, but i thought i'd see how the natives use them.

Most of us English tend to refer to ourselves as British or English, personal preference, although we hold British passports. English is a bit more nationalistic.
The United Kingdom is Great Britain (England Scotland & Wales) & Northern Ireland.
The Republic of Ireland is not part of Britain or the UK (I think)
Wheras me, I'm a Geordie, you wouldn't understand my dialect. I'm from the North East corner of England that reaches to the Scottish border. I'm on the northern side of Hadrian's wall!
