as some or most of you may know, i'm gay, and i've recently been coming out of the closet after being repressed most of my life.
well, as i read a number of the testimonials here about leaving the watchtower, it strikes me how familiar the feelings of those who are contemplating leaving are so similar to mine in coming out.
the fear of what people will think, how it will affect lives, the change in life path, disappointment of famliy members, the sense of freedom after it's been done, etc.
God, I was terrified of "coming out" to my family. My father was one of those men who used to swerve his car and aim for someone crossing the road who "looked like a fruit", while laughing his head off at their reaction. He carried a baseball bat in the boot of his car which he fondly refered to as his "fruit juicer". Truly a delightful man. Anyway, I left the dubs and immigrated to England in order to "come out". I went back to South Africa on a trip specifically to tell my family I was Gay... I remember the terror I felt on the flight over, but KNEW I had a home and job and life in England I could come home to... the hardest/saddest part was knowing I was going to alienate myself with one statement, two words long "I'm Gay." My sister had made it clear to me that all homosexuals are peodophiles (with bad breath no less) and no homosexual would be allowed near her children. 8 years later she has been true to her word. I have not seen my niece or nephew since. My father barely speaks to me. He was in England in December with his new wife, in Oxford for 3 weeks... didn't hear from him. Hey ho. Their loss now. I am so happy and free I would never ever go back to the old days!!!

i was a little surprised by his answer that nearly all of them were!

I remember when George Benson visited a meeting at the Bethel Congregation at Roodekrans (South Africa) while I was serving there. One of the sisters was a radio presenter and he attended as her guest. He arrived with a half dozen HUGE body gaurds who "gaurded" the exits and entrances and sat on either side of him. It was ABSURD to say the least. And the excitement that there was a "celeb" in the crowd was pathetic. I remember a sister asking him if he found it difficult to juggle the "truth" and his career and he said not and in fact he was an elder... which I found HARD to believe.
i mentioned before on another post that i am in college working on my ba degree and i am having such a "hard" time with believing in the bible since taking my science class.
the information that i am learning is totally destroying my faith in the bible.
i still believe in jehovah and jesus and would never chose the "atheist" way but i am wondering if maybe the bible is just a book of fairytales to teach us a lesson.

i had a long conversation last night with an old jw friend whose sister and brother-in-law are bethelites since the 1970s.
she is an artist, and he runs a small but important department there.. we were talking about the bethel downsizing (my friend was well aware of it), and i told him i figured his sister and b-i-l would be safe due to the fact that they are now in their 60s and have something close to 4 decades seniority.
but he said no, that they were worried that they would be asked to leave as well, sent into the circuit work or as special pioneers sent where the "need is great.".
I wonder what is happening to Bethel's around the world. I remember the Bethel brother who studied with me, Gerard (basically I fancied the PANTS off him) ALWAYS told me that should the Borg ever run out of money, then he would know it's not the truth. Well, I wonder if he ends up on his arse as a result of his Bethel running out of money, if he will then believe it's all bullshit.
