Question- do JWs use the term overlapping generations
by Xanthippe in... or is that one of our memes?
thanks..

As others have said, JWs don’t talk about it, presumably because it’s embarrasong. Such a contrast with the 1980s when the old “generation” teaching provoked conversation and excitement, at least among some.
Note interesting use of the word “overlapping” in a QFR from 1952:

Questions From Readers
● Your publications point out that the battle of Armageddon will come in this generation, and that this generation began A.D. 1914. Scripturally, how long is a generation?—G. P., Liberia.
Webster’s unabridged dictionary gives, in part, this definition of generation: “The average lifetime of man, or the ordinary period of time at which one rank follows another, or father is succeeded by child; an age. A generation is usually taken to be about 33 years.” But the Bible is not so specific. It gives no number of years for a generation. And in Matthew 24:34, Mark 13:30 and Luke 21:32, the texts mentioning the generation the question refers to, we are not to take generation as meaning the average time for one generation to be succeeded by the next, as Webster’s does in its 33-year approximation; but rather more like Webster’s first-quoted definition, “the average lifetime of man.” Three or even four generations may be living at the same time, their lives overlapping. (Ps. 78:4; 145:4) Before the Noachian flood the life span was hundreds of years. Down through the centuries since, it has varied, and even now is different in different countries. The Bible does speak of a man’s days as being threescore and ten or fourscore years; but it assigns no specific number of years to a generation.—Ps. 90:10.Even if it did, we could not calculate from such a figure the date of Armageddon, for the texts here under discussion do not say God’s battle comes right at the end of this generation, but before its end. To try to say how many years before its end would be speculative. The texts merely set a limit that is sufficiently definite for all present practical purposes. Some persons living A.D. 1914 when the series of foretold events began will also be living when the series ends with Armageddon. All the events will come within the span of a generation. There are hundreds of millions of persons living now that were living in 1914, and many millions of these persons could yet live a score or more years. Just when the lives of the majority of them will be cut short by Armageddon we cannot say.

Observation on the external appearance of Kingdom Halls (or are they JW.ORG facilities?)
by sd-7 ini happened to be picking up the family from the kingdom hall today, and it struck me how the outside appearance has changed a little.
i know it's not new, but perhaps being away from it all for so long made a difference.. of course i noticed the blue jw.org box on the side labeled "kingdom hall of jehovah's witnesses", but it was two things that stood out to me.
the first thing was the meeting times.

The generic term “midweek meeting” wasn’t possible until they dumped the book study (in 2008?) because you would need to specify which midweek meeting.
I know Unitarians discussed using the term “midweek meeting” but rejected it on the grounds that it apparently sounds evangelical.

Should Reparations Be Given To Relatives of Slaves?
by minimus insome people say that’s the least we should do while others say no way!

what do you think about dispensing reparations?

Plus it seems odd to me that anyone on the left would prioritise injustices from centuries ago when there are many racial injustices in the present that need fixing first.
Such as the preponderance of black people in prisons being compelled to perform free labour for commercial companies. Is it the case that, while white people are more likely to use drugs, back people are far more likely to be convicted of using drugs?
We have a similar situation in the UK where poorer black people in London who use cocaine can spend many years in jail, whereas wealthy while people who use cocaine are considered good candidates for prime minister.

I have a question. Has anyone with any real access to power (such as a Democrat with a good chance of achieving high office) actually promoted the idea of reparations as described in this thread? It seems to me a pretty a unworkable idea as described, and it really makes me wonder if it’s a serious policy option or, more likely, a fringe idea that some on the left have suggested, and that people on the right have decided to shout about as loudly as they can, as if it’s mainstream democrat policy, and milk it for all its worth. -

STOP treating Watchtower Bible & Tract SOCIETY as a RELIGION
by Nathan R. Koppe in"the watchtower society is not a religious society for 👥 public worship, such as a ⛪️ church, but is a 💲 business corporation..."
➡️ please use and demonstrate this if you are involved in any legal action, it's not about religious rights and freedom, this is where they are 'fooling' their followers and authorities❗️
➡️ the purpose of disfellowshipping, disassociating and shunning are 'legalistic and pharisaical tricks' to 'name and shame' anyone asking (the right) questions about it's biblical teachings (aka) doctrines, (abuse) policies and the real truth about the 'truth' (aka apostate)❗️

"Its not about the numbers...Its about Love"
by Solzhenitsyn inin the org did anyone ever tell you that its not about the numbers...yet the reality was that it was all about the numbers?.

Less than it used to be. Watchtowers, Yearbooks, Kingdom Ministries, other publications and talks used to be filled with statistics. Now, hardly any.

Governing Body - Time in Ministry
by Peeringin inis there any transparency in how many hours on the ministry the governing body members do on the ministry?
by this i mean the physical act of going door to door in their area.
i guess it is plausible that they would count overseas trips and working on publications as part of their ministry, but this is not what they encourage from the jw on the street.. is it possible for a gb member to be reproved or otherwise for not going out in service?

Weren’t some of the GB 1.0 well known for doing regular street preaching round Brooklyn: Franz, Barry, Poetzinger, as mentioned, and people like that.
Has Paul Gillies been appointed to the GB yet? I wonder if he goes on the ministry. Maybe he’s lacking hours!
I'm tempted to start a thread “has Paul Gillies been appointed to the GB yet?” Just to see if it influences his promotion. Or, “why hasn’t Paul Gillies been appointed yet?” Or, “has apostate speculation ruined Paul Gillies’ rise to the GB?”
