It's not quite true of Mormons. It may be that ordinary Mormons are told to avoid critical literature. At the same time they have a small army of academic Mormons who do little else but read and refute literature critical of the church; activity sanctioned by the church, and much of it in collaboration with Brigham Young University. JWs have nothing comparable to this.

I am currently reading the new history of the Holocaust by British historian Laurence Rees and it reminded me of a comment in the Awake! magazine I read years ago and trusted as factual. I quote both passages without comment.
Awake! 8/22 1995.
Although Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Dachau, and Sachsenhausen were names unknown to most people until after World War II, they were well known to readers of The Golden Age and Consolation. The reports of Jehovah’s Witnesses, smuggled out of the camps at great risk and publicized in Watch Tower literature, exposed the murderous intent of the Third Reich. The Holocaust: A New History (2017), Laurence Rees, pp. 73 and 74.
The Nazis did not hide the concentration camps. Their existence was well known and newspapers around the world carried stories about them. On 1 January 1934, for instance, the Manchester Guardian accurately described the reality of life in the so-called bunker in Dachau... The consequence of works like Im Moerderlager Dachau, and Juda verrecke. Ein Rabbiner im Konzentrationslager, together with articles in the Manchester Guardian and other newspapers, was that the brutal nature of the Nazi regime was known to the world from the beginning. -

by rory-ks ini'm just making my way through crisis of conscience for the second time and once again i am struck by the presentation of such detailed records.
letters are shown in full - copies of letters from the branch, and to the branch.
reports are quoted vebatim.

Who has Raymond Franz's archive now?
Let's hope not the same people who have utterly failed to keep his books in print.

1914 to be abandoned around 2016
by Alfred inthe other day i was doing some research about "1914" for a friend on my wt cd library (spanish) and i found it quite interesting that the number of times "1914" is mentioned in the watchtower magazine during the previous 3 decades has been dropping exponentially as follows.... 1980-1989: mentioned 854 times.
1990-1999: mentioned 492 times.
2000-2009: mentioned 222 times.

Maybe not today, and maybe not tomorrow, but someday, and for the rest of our lives, the Watchtower will abandon the 1914 doctrine.

There might be a drop of 75% of mentions of 1914 over the last 30/40 years. But how many fewer words appear in the magazines in total these days. It might be a similar drop in total number of words. So in proportion 1914 might not be any less prominent.
It was included in the new Bible. And it's centre stage of the crazy new overlapping doctrine.

Trump vows to repeal limits on churches
by StarTrekAngel ini know the jws would not necessarily take advantage of this (or may be they would) but certainly, they will spin it off somehow.. https://www.yahoo.com/news/religious-looking-trump-protections-081209487--politics.html.

You okay Landry? You should see a doctor about that.
Mind you, last time I visited the doctor I told him I thought I was shrinking.
He told me I'd have to be a little patient.

DefInitely. Some people seem to think they are only pretending to be short of money. It doesn't look pretend to me.
And rebelfighter makes a good point. Many assume that all the money from the property sales goes straight in their pocket. But for all we know they could have borrowed against their property assets years ago. It would have been very tempting when property prices were rising so fast.

I had a look at your post history. I notice that you had an existential crisis 8 months ago but that it was resolved 7 months ago. I salute your concision and admire your ability to get on with it. I'm still languishing and directionless 17 years in. Personally I've never understood the need to make dramatic goodbye threads and would never indulge in the practice myself.
