a christian friend of mine had a melt down this weekend and screamed at my roommate about both of us being "preachy atheists".

he also said, in talking about me, that "i can see it in his eyes, he think's he's right!

" it was after a bunch of drinks at a bar and my roommate said that he was nearly in tears.

hey GBL, in the words of my brother (back before i realized he's a jackass), "of course i think i'm right. what kind of moron thinks they're wrong?"

when i left i went through a period where i said, everyone should be able to believe whatever they want! then i realized how naive that is, and changed it to, well, as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. a little while later i changed that to, well, as long as their beliefs can reconcile dependable science. for awhile i would try to...umm...*enlighten* them on just what i meant by "dependable science." they didn't like that. now i just believe what i believe and don't let anyone try to get away with any crap if i'm having a conversation with them. seems to work a lot better.

there's no shame in knowing you're right if you can prove that you are.

this week i paid .10 more a gallon than last week.

you know how much extra the rise cost me?.

even if we didnt use as much gas, the Chinese would take up the slack.

it's not like there is some global total allotment on any given day/week/month and that total is divided up between all the countries. demand is determined after the fact. each country uses what they use. if the US suddenly had no need for oil anymore the global demand would drop by 1/3. china wouldn't say, "oh look! there's more oil available! sign us up for an extra million barrels!", leaving the global demand unchanged.

When gas is objectively expensive it will show in your car industry.

that's true, but unfortunately, our domestic manufacturers (GM) missed the boat on the patents on hybrid technology. so now there are basically no domestic hybrid vehicles. i contacted a local toyota dealership about hybrid availability and he said they had at least a 6-8 month waiting list. hybrids are in demand here, there is just no supply. the japanese patents run out within the next couple of years, and then i think we'll see a LOT more and varied models of hybrids here in the states.

Gas prices ARE high. A couple years ago I could fill my tank on $15. That's from E to F. Do you know how much I pay now?
At least 31 bucks every single week, and I own a coupe. That's an increase of $64 per month that could be used to pay my cable or credit card bill.

my thing is that at least where i live, apartment rates are going up. cable is going up. beer at the astros game is going up. i look at it this way: the beer at the astros games is 7.50 for 12 oz in the park; you can get a case for the same price right outside. the park is gouging because they know that us alky's will pay whatever they say we will. the same goes for gasoline. we'll pay because we need it. however, if we compare the price of the gas *in the park* (the US) to right *outside the park* (the rest of the world)...it's STILL a whole heck of a lot cheaper to buy it in the park! we are not entitled to cheap gas just because that's what we're used to!

i know, i hate spending 30 bucks at the pump too, but in comparison to the amount that i spend every month on beer at baseball games, it's a drop in the bucket.

I never understood why one is not willing to give a person the chance of making a new start in life.

it's too early for this bullsh*t...

pedophilia is a mental disorder that unfortunately can't be *fixed*. it can be treated, sometimes effectively (usually not), but as far as a "new start" goes...that's just wishful thinking. statistically, the crime of pedophilia has one of the highest rates of repeat offenders. when a 'chance at making a new start' is offered, the majority of the time it is a mistake as the creep goes on to offend again. in general, i'm not in favor of the death penalty...with the exception of pedophiles. something is broken in their mind and at this time it can't be fixed.

so, i say: sorry buddy, life sucks. bye bye.

Agnostic is the term, not atheist.....

i've posted this before, but "agnostic" is a relatively new term. for 1000's of years before the term was created philosophers that did not believe in god and believed that ultimately, the question of whether god exists is unknowable, did not NEED the term agnostic. why? because "atheist" means "does not believe in _____" (fill in the blank with whichever god you have in mind). it does NOT mean "knows that there is no god whatsoever." i know some disagree with me on this, and that's fine but linguisticly, "atheist" means exactly what people think "agnostic" means. also, linguisticly, "agnostic" means that you don't know if you know whether you believe in god or not. (and this stance is not available unless you are a little baby)

one of the most difficult things for ex-jehovah's witnesses (heretofore referred to as ex-jws) to deal with is the loss of friends and family -- "loved ones.

" rejection hurts, and the pain seems to be very intense for some.

ex-jws seem validated to feel so awful since most humans naturally believe that love is a human need.

Yeah, but I'd die to have Holland's public transportation system and bike & moped paths over here.

that's true too. i'm in houston, one of the biggest cities, by both sq mileage and population in the country and yet we basically may as well have no mass transit system. some cities have fared better (chicago and NY, for sure) but in houston you simply have to have a car. that's why the SUVs have to go the way of the dinosaur. (since we have to drive, drive small.)
