Shortly before I left the borg two years ago I had a conversation with an elder who had recently returned from Patterson Bethel. He was one of the "computer nuts" at Patterson and one of the things he was assigned to do was "clean up" after certain young Bethelites who had a problem with viewing porn. He said that the elders lovingly and patiently worked with these young Bethelites to help them make progress over their problem with porn. I thought at the time this was great. The society really was patient and loving in helping in that way. I wonder now if this is still how things will be handled with those young Bethelites. How can this article be reconciled with problems even Bethelites might have? Is this talking from both sides of the mouth? Or will these young Bethelites be turned out on their heads in the near future?

Am I wrong or is the first time it has been mentioned that viewing pornography could be a disfellowshipping offense?

I'm Famous: I Was Mentioned at the D.C.!
by bavman inhowever, i was mentioned.
i was told today by a very reliable source my dad gave a talk at the latest district convention.
in it, he talked about how he 'has had to endure both his son and daughter leaving the truth.

Well, not by name exactly. However, I was mentioned. I was told today by a very reliable source my Dad gave a talk at the latest District convention. In it, he talked about how he 'has had to endure both his son and daughter leaving the truth.' Awwww....woe is me....always about you isn't it Dad? Just when I start feeling sad for my parents something like this comes up. In front of 8000 people of whom literally hundreds know me you had to say that. Looking for sympathy perhaps? Thinking it might "encourage" others who have shunned their family members to keep it up? What about my 10 year old son sitting there listening to that? Talk about driving a wedge. I always love it when he comes back from these conventions and I talk to him on the phone the next day...so much colder....or perhaps this is just the thing that could help him see how cold and insensitive you and the Watchtower "toughs" are? I know the person who told me about this reacted this way. He told me he was 'very upset' that was said...that it 'realy bothered him'. I wonder too why my Dad would say something like this when he knows my sister still believes most of the witness dogma. This will make it even harder for her to return. Not too smart in my book. But then maybe it is like it seems to be. That is, the Tower is getting stricter, tougher, and seems to be saying 'like it or leave it, for we don't give a shit'. Well, I don't give a shit either, so I left as have many others and with this kind of "compassion" going around I imagine many others will be also.

I've had it. I want to DA myself
by White Waves inbut i am afraid to send a letter to my old kh.
what should i write to make sure they don't just df me?
also, they refused my request to da myself before.

Hello White Waves,
I DA'd myself two years ago and I am very glad to have done so. My letter was short and sweet on a worn out old piece of notebook paper in handwriting (one of my complaints was how corporate everything had gotten and that was my slam about that). There were many benefits to this however one of these would not be yours now. That is, the announcement at the K. Hall is the same now. I was glad to have known at the time people at the hall would be hearing that I da'd MYSELF. That wouldn't be the case for you. Still, other benefits would be the fact you decided your own fate, the elders would still know you made the decision, it would give you release and power over the situation, you would be able to keep the bastards away from you. I was already being shunned by family and others as well so that didn't come into the picture at all. Those that are willing to talk to me now of that former group are only the ones that I would want to have talk to me.
I don't see how your letter could be refused. You could also send a copy to New York and let the elders know you did so. You could also join another church or the army...that's the same as Da'ing...
Take care and I hope all goes well for you....

Bart Erhman, transformation complete?
by peacefulpete inbart began as a fundamentalist like ourselves but in time his studious nature led him to critical bible scholarship.
his books are viewed as authoritative.
in an interesting interview he recounts this transformation and hints that he has finally left the conviction that there ever was a historical jesus, or that personage/s whose lives are reflected in certain episodes in the legend served merely as sources for the jesus character.

Publisher Numbers and Romania

I remember how excited I felt when communism fell. I was at Pioneer school at the time the tanks went through the walls and I watched Yeltsin standing on a tank with my "sponsor family". How Jehovah was blessing us! Now the good news could be preached and our brothers could have freedom. Later on the yearbook could publish freely the numbers of our brothers there in Russia and as the curtain continued to fall in Eastern Europe more numbers could be published including those from Romania. Indeed the numbers that were published were fantastic! It turned out many could be counted as faithful witnesses in those lands. I wonder though, how accurate those numbers really were? Especially after reading a page from a "Bible student" website. On a side note, I talked with a local "bible student" in my area a couple years ago who also fondly "recalled" the time the curtain fell and it was found many of his brethren were found to still be in Romania and other Eastern European lands. Here's the link to the page: http://www.biblestudents.net/history/daughters_tower.htm#part43
Below is the paragraph that got me wondering....
When the Curtain fell in Europe, the Society was eager to see what was left of the Romanian Jehovah's Witnesses. They were quite disappointed. Because of the loss of communication from the war, the Bible Students had adopted the name "Jehovah's witnesses", but were still reading and studying Russell's writings and discarding the current literature from the Society. When the Society came in, they were dumbfounded at what they saw. Bible Students going under the name "Jehovah's witnesses".
Could it be that these "Bible students" were among those counted by the society. They were going under the name of "Jehovah's witnesses". Certainly they WERE NOT Jehovah's witnesses in reality however.
Does anyone have any ideas on this?

The Cassini spacecraft has found evidence of liquid water spewing from geysers on one of Saturn's icy moons, raising the tantalizing possibility that the celestial object harbors life.
The surprising discovery excited some scientists, who say the Saturn moon, Enceladus, should be added to the short list of places within the solar system most likely to have extraterrestrial life.
Recent high-resolution images snapped by the orbiting Cassini confirmed the eruption of icy jets and giant water vapor plumes from geysers resembling frozen Old Faithfuls at Enceladus' south pole.
"We have the smoking gun" that proves the existence of water, said Carolyn Porco, a Cassini imaging scientist from the Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colo.
If Enceladus does harbor life, it probably consists of microbes or other primitive organisms capable of living in extreme conditions, scientists say.
The findings were published in Friday's issue of the journal Science.
David Morrison, a senior scientist at NASA's Astrobiology Institute, cautioned against rushing to judgment about whether the tiny moon could support life. Scientists generally agree habitats need several ingredients for life to emerge, including water, a stable heat source and the right chemical recipe.
"It's certainly interesting, but I don't see how much more you can say beyond that," Morrison said.
Scientists believe Mars and Jupiter's icy moons might have or once had conditions hospitable to life.
Saturn is around 800 million miles from Earth. Enceladus measures 314 miles across and is the shiniest object in the solar system.
It was long thought to be cold and still. But scientists now believe it is a geologically active moon that possesses an unusually warm south pole.
The water is believed to vent from fissures in the south pole. Porco said the venting has probably been going on for at least several thousand years, potentially providing a lasting heat source.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a joint NASA-European Space Agency project. The spacecraft was launched in 1997 and went into orbit around Saturn in 2004, exploring its spectacular rings and many moons. Cassini made three flybys of Enceladus last year and is expected to fly within 220 miles of the moon again in 2008.
