i have gotten soooo fed up of trying to sift my way through hundreds of items on amazon, that i am now sick to death, and wishing jsb were never even born (may almighty god forbid) - please note my posy reference to islamic philosophy:).
i want a good recording of the bach partitas for solo violin played by a really good musician on a baroque violin with good stylistic training.. any takers??.
make a hamster happy :(.
My friend is about 10 years younger than me. I believe she told me once that she was at Julliard when Sarah Chang was there so what? 1980's. I do know she traveled afterwards in Europe performing, especially in Germany. She's in the Pacific NW, USA now.
About the congregation attitude about my playing, one incident stands out in my mind (although there were others). I was home one morning instead of being out in FS and the sisters stopped to use my bathroom as they often did when in the neighborhood. I was teaching myself a fiddle tune from a recording; four measures forward, two back, forward a few more back a bit...until I finally had it down. Anyway, one of the sisters looked at me holding my violin and asked in a scolding sort of voice "what are you doing?" She then insinuated that playing the violin was just a hobby best saved for the 'new system' I will add that I was also on medication at the time and really taking it easy to let my body heal and so was not out in FS much. Anyway, the tune I was learning became my signature Irish fiddle tune called 'The Strayaway Child'. I'm so so glad I strayed away.
I started teaching only Celtic fiddling styles at first but have over the 15 years that I've been teaching I've gone back to classical basics. I smile over the number of students who signed on with me to only do fiddling but who were turned on to the joys of Baroque era music. I make no claims to be the best teacher and feel inadequate at times because I didn't get the really intense training but this 'hobby' has been not only my passion but my soul source of income since my husband died 14 years ago. You're so right about the 120 hrs practice! I have my violin in hand far more than that sometimes just going over scales and arpeggios and beginning stuff week after week with students but I did notice early on that even that made my intonation and tone so much better. I use time in between students to practice 'my' stuff and also I play with some local musicians doing everything from Celtic traditional to jazz. Although I got a bit of a late start, this is what I really think I am here on this earth to do : )

Then you have just earned the right to critique, hamsterbait!
(I have heard armchair classical aficionados pick apart musicians and it always bugs me.)
I did NOT get to go to uni and just barely got to get private lessons because of the JW strictures. I wish I could have but my life turned in the direction Watchtower society likes to turn young ones and I ended up marrying young and having four kids and doing the worthless preaching up until the age of 41. I did continue to play on my own and when my youngest got into the teen years I started teaching. I have a friend who is in several Baroque and early music ensembles. She plays Viola D'amore and also baroque viola and violin. But she also will sit in with a 'lowly' fiddler like me and play in an Irish session or Scandinavian duet LOL. We've compared notes many times on teaching and various musical styles and I think my story made her appreciate the opportunities she had all the more so....if she'd been born into a JW family maybe she'd have been like me. When I've looked at her music from when she was at Juilliard and the marginal notations and realize she was just a young girl at the time I find myself wishing (again) that I had been born into different circumstances *sigh*
Oh well. It is what it is. I hope you find that 'just right' rendition of Bach. If I get a chance I will ask my friend if she has a favorite and let you know. Baroque technique IS different to classical!

Oh, about the picture in my avatar.....taken about 15 years ago and was cutting loose on not Bach but probably Tom Petty or the Stones. I have very eclectic taste in music but as I said, the music of Bach is my true medicine ; )

Hamster bait, do you play violin or any musical instrument yourself?
Although I cannot play a performance quality rendition of that Bach Partita no. 3 that Hahn played I can appreciate the beauty of her rendition of it and also find myself wanting to go get out my music and go into the 'Bach Zone'. There is nothing to me more fulfilling than working through a Sarabande OR Partita Or any other thing BACH! I may never be great with it but it is a 'place' a musician can escape to and brings more satisfaction than anything else I do in my ordinary mundane existence.
Unless you can play yourself I don't think you should be so hard on these musicians. The bowed instruments are the most difficult instruments to master IMO.
forgive me if this has been covered.
last year i did a synopsis of the convention, but my wife decided she did not want to go this year (thats a win), so i didn't either.
a good friend of mine however tipped me to something in david splanes talk.. its pretty mild, but seems a bit wacky.
When I was still in I always wondered about that scripture where Paul had his out of body experience. I never understood why he said he was 'boasting' until after I left and read parts of The Book of Enoch where Enoch has the same experience. It occurred to me that Paul could only be boasting to people who had read or had knowledge of this Enochian literature. I wonder if the Book of Enoch was part of his "all scriptures inspired of God"?
I mentioned that scripture to my jdub son in law and he thought I was lying or making something up. I had to show him the scripture from the NWT. He'd never seen it.
So wow ~ the GB are going to finally tackle that one! It was always a scripture that was passed over and I only knew of it because of reading on after some other scripture was quoted; got bored often during meetings. Bet they will 'spin it' real good!
i,m sure they would like to find out the names of some who post here.
venting..
There is a dilemma I think If they are reading on this site. That is the fact that they WILL get their eyes opened IF they have functioning brain cells. So, fear of learning TTAT might mean that they DON'T look here.
But we know that they do.
So they are either total morons or.......
They look and know full well the scam that they are perpetuating. Shame, shame on them!
what are the best quotes, old and new about this mystical power?
i just had a " come to jesus " talk with my wife.

"Thus the Bible is an organizational book and belongs to the Christian congregation as an organization, not to individuals, regardless of how sincerely they may believe that they can interpret the Bible."
Really? That is so presumptuous of them to assume such a thing. What a leap in logic!

.
That article on "know it's the truth" or something like that...I read more of that Watchtower article than I have in a decade at least and I am just flabbergasted at the writing style! So many assumptions and misleading statements!
I bought into all of this during my time in because I hadn't read about anything else. Were JW's the ONLY ones to oppose WWII? No...but I didn't know that nor did I know about the letter Rutherford sent to Hitler basically telling Hitler that JW's were in total agreement about the Jews (anti Semetism) and that the USA was full of *#it!
Does any other group preach about Jesus? Um....yes, a lot do.
Do other groups translate in obscure languages? I think I read on another thread here that there are other Bible publishing groups that do (I'll try to find that info). It doesn't really matter to me however because I DON'T believe the Bible is inspired by anything more than men.
The testimonies of three obscure and unknown 'brothers' was supposed to inspire belief that this is the truth....yeah right. The words of these men could easily have been scripted from the magazines (and in fact were). The typical rank & file witness doesn't even know he/she is spouting verbatim Watchtower sentences. So brainwashed.
The article assumes that there was an organized first century Christian congregation. Laughable! There was no model for first century Christians. It was a haberdashery of conflicting ideas. It wasn't until the 4th century AD that the Catholic council of Nicea gave it structure by choosing the writings that would be included in the 'New Testiment'.
so many assumptions were made. It was sickening to read and even more sickening knowing the number of people who will swallow it without a second thought
i took up cycing a couple of months ago just to get fitter and lose a bit of excess weight.. i bought a second-hand hybrid bike (weighs only slightly less than a truck) and fitted road tyres.
four or five times a week i will go for a ride after work for an hour or so.
i am fortunate enough to live in rural north england surrounded by limitless quiet roads.
I got myself a Giant hybrid for my 55th birthday...my present to myself. I mostly ride around town but like hitting the local rail trails, too. One trip to the Banks/Vernonia trail with my daughter and her boyfriend we got positively drenched but did manage to get a picture of an owl watching all the soaked bikers riding by. I sent it in to Rails-To-Trails and they used it for the main photo for that trail! If you go to railstotrails.org you can see it under the Banks/Vernonia trail in Oregon.
