  But I cringe sometimes to read comments that are as presumpteous as your 'like it or not' comment, seeing as though it's all based on theology in the first place.

  EP, the statement was made in the context of the word the Bible writer used for what we refer to as "soul". It has little to do with interpretation no matter if the Bible is fiction or fact. The idea here is that a person can know with a strong measure of certainty what the dude writing the Bible meant when he wrote what he wrote. Know wut a mean?

  The Hawaiians, for example, use the same words for different things, and you can only get the true meaning of what they are communicating through the context the word is used in, and in conjunction with the speaker's facial expressions, especially the use of the eyebrows, and tonality. You woulod really have to understand Hawaiian to understand the written language. "Aloha" is the most elementary example.

  We will just agree to disagree and I am blissful none the less.

  i'm sitting reading all the post on the tv shows and movies we weren't allowed to watch.

  i am now completely hysterical laughing out loud at how insane this all was.

  OMG, I know what you mean, PC. I would have "demon attacks" in my sleep and I would pray to Jehovah, I would cry out or at least whisper Jehovah, but they never let me alone until they wanted to. They stopped bothering me when I finally said to them firmly, "leave me alone and don't ever come back . . . ever!"

  Wrong, for how can you call something true which is taken from fiction? It's just another interpretation - like it or not.

  This is why I hate these threads . . . (haven't had much sleep, so this might be a bit smart-ass. No biggy)

  Ok, first of all, the Old Testiment, written in mainly Hebrew is comprised of specific words with specific definitions or meanings (just like English) that can be accurately translated into another language. If the meaning of a particular translated word is ambiguous you have to go back and find out what the original word in that language was and find out what that original word meant or at least its most commonly used definition. The original Hebrew word used in the Bible which we have translated to "soul" for example is, in Hebrew, "nephish" which has only one meaning in Hebrew and cannot be misinterpreted because it does have a specific meaning: "a breather". What has to be interpreted here? Nothing. When the Bible refers to man and animal as "souls", (nephish), it is litterally calling all of us "breathers" Just as if I called someone "idiot", it would be very hard to misinterpret what was originally inferred, no?

  Bible translators render the Hebrew word "nephish" as "soul" in english, which because of its ambiguity has lead churches to erroneously teach that the soul lives on after we die. Once you know that "soul" orginally rendered "nephish" litterally means "a breather" then it does not make much sense to conclude or "interpret" the Bible to mean that when the "breather" dies, the "breather" keeps living. That would be an obvious contradiction, no?

  I take it that you think the Bible is a work of fiction? Run along then and go bother the athiests, because this discussion is for those who believe the Bible is true and the inspired word of God. My bad patch with a little cult called the JW's hasn't left me bitter and thinking the Bible and God is all bullshizer. (((((HUGS))))))

  Yes, indeed! My ol' JW Aunt-Fanatical-Drunken-Wino Ester held that everything was demonized. Sometimes my poor mom would jump on board with that crap, too.

  When the song, One Tin Soldier came out with the Billy Jack movie back in the early 70's, she (my aunt) forbade all of us to listen to that song since one of the lines was "go ahead and hate your neigbor, go ahead and cheat a friend . . . " She said it was demonized.

  So was the plastic arrangement of roses my gramma had on her wall, as was a copy of Helter Skelter we had in our book case, and the stuffed toy bunny I was given by a "worldly" friend. It was insanity and she was/is a maniac. I have had anxiety attacks, sleep paralysis mistaken for demon attacks, and demon paranoia my whole JW life. I am happily free of that paranoia now and I no longer fear the demons as I was taught to as a child. Neither do I have "demon attacks" anymore. God! What insane slavery to nothing!

  OK, I have learned to hate these topics, but here goes.

  In order for Jesus' ransom sacrefice to be valid, he would had to have experienced death. If he did not really die at calvery, then it is all bullshizer and his sacrefice was meaningless. It was a hat trick, a pulling of the whool.

  There is no spirit. Spirit literally translates breath

  According to Gesenius Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon To The Old Testiment, a scholarly non JW publication, page 571a, says the spirit of man is "that which has breath, a living creature."

  The "soul" is "animal of life, i.e., a living creature. pg 274b

  The world of the dead - Sheol or Hades - for those who are "separated" from God's spirit, where it "sleeps" until it is resurrected by God;

  And I hate to break it to you, but, Hades is: 1. to sleep the sleep of death. 2. The place or abode of the dead . . . and 3. DESTRUCTION. pg 461a

  Nothing whatsoever indicates the soul or spirit of man is seperate and survives the physical death. Those are the facts. Take it or leave it.

  The WTBTS got this one right, like it or not.

  Congregation Book Studies in a brothers home-What weirdness did you endure?

  when i was new witness in the late 70's i was assigned to young couples new home.

  we were required to park our shoes inside the back door and proceed in our socks to the front room...fine.

  the other piece to this was the couple hosting study had a big male blood hound dog of some kind.

  Been to many different book studies hosted in bros' homes over the years. Brother comb-over Joe and sister Cathy bleach blond hosted the one where we had to remove our shoes. The other notable study group was hosted in the home of an aspiring ministerial servant and his latin wife who pretended she did not have an accent as thick as Agador Spartagus and claimed to speak not a word of spanish. Across the culdasack was really old elder-about-to-retire postman who conducted the study and his latin wife who took offense at her neigbors denial of her latin heritage and often said so openly.

  I remember how that poor old elder would pause sometimes in the middle of a statement as if he were about to say, "God, I hate this crap. If I have to come over here and conduct this stupid study with you stupid people in this stupid house one more time and rehash anymore of this stupid recycled garbage . . . two more months to retire, two more months to retire . . . I can do it. I can do it."

  Do You Study the Bible With Your Kids?

  when we were jws, studying with our kids, pumping their little minds with the wt's teaching was a top priority.

  i remember studying the wt with them, then the biblereading, then the bookstudy, the the great teacher book,etc.

  it seemed like it never ended.

  Movies and TV Shows You Didn't Watch Because You Were A JW

  this week i mentioned how i never saw the movie "ghost" because it was considered "demonistic".

  i also volunteered that that i could not watch "bewitched", although "i dream of jeannie" was a conscience matter......any thing you didn't watch because you were a witness?

  As a kid, we could pretty much watch anything on regular tv. Mom sometimes even let us watch The Grinch and Frosty the Snow Man. It was only questionable movies on "channel 100" or HBO that she monitered. I remember going to the drive in one night to see The Stepford Wives or something . . . Legend of the Hell House or whatever, and my mom was so upset over one scene that in an effort to get the hell out of the drive in and prevent us kids from seeing anything bad, she pulled away from the stall with the speaker still in the window and CRASH! glass popcorn everywhere, he he.

  Now, my fanatical JW-drunken-wino-aunt-mother-in-law to an elder, Esther, on the other hand was really over the top. I use to have to tell my cousin, word for word, dialogue, action sequence, make out scenes from that week's episode of Starsky & Hutch. He wanted so badly to watch Starsky and Hutch, but alas, everything on TV and radio was "demonized" to my aunt and we got beatings with dish towels, skillets, rulers, wooden spoons and enema bags if we were caught watching. Ah, good times, good times.
