Do you charge your 18+ kids rent?
by tall penguin ini've been wondering what people think about this.
as soon as i turned 18 and had an income (it was disability but income just the same) my parents began to charge me room and board.
is this common practice?

I was charged rent the minute I got my first job (at 16 and back in the 70s) I had to pay $50 a month of my meager salary and that went up as my earnings increased. Ridiculous but what can I say, I was raised in a cult.
No way would I charge my kids rent, never have (they are now 25 and 22). I subsidized their earnings while in school, they have always been full time students and part-time workers. I paid their rent and health insurance. My daughter graduated last summer, is engaged and has opened a restaurant with her fiance. (no longer requiring my subsidies!) Both of my kids lived outside of the home after 1st year of school, and I helped with rent as described above. My son is still in school and I pay his rent. A very worthwhile investment IMO.
I consider it a blessing to be able to help them in this way. It has not made them selfish, unappreciative, lazy or anything else of that nature. They have learned to manage their money, they don't receive a free ride and while at home they didn't expect one - they pitched in with cleaning etc. Even though they didn't have to pay rent.
I think it is an old fashioned concept to think that you can't teach your kids good values and an appreciation of money, finances, etc. without charging them for upkeep etc. As their parent I am delighted I can help them and I'm confident it will reap rewards in the long run.

""I get so irritated when I see the people who are on welfare that I am supporting (via taxes) making more money than I do at a full time government job!!"" you must have the shitties government job on earth if welfare recipients make more money than you do.

Maybe Tigerman is 80 and .... ? Molesters deserve condemnation and punishment, period. JWD is not alone in condemning such acts. The rehabilitation factor is virtually non-existent with pedophiles. If these charges are true, and apparently they are since his is being SENTENCED, he deserves everything he gets and more.

"Again, defd defends the religion, yet denies it by being on this forum. The hypocrisy is what annoys me." Perhaps there is more to defd's being here than meets the eye? The transition out doesn't happen overnight. Now defd may protest, but being on this forum is exposing defd to ideas and experiences of others that may change views. I agree that you should just .... simmer down a bit.

I have to confess I agree with Old Soul. My original reaction was along the line of daystar's.... but then after a bit of thought I reminded myself of what life was like in the cult. Comparisons of JWism to other religions and are inappropriate. NOT being an "upstanding"member of the Watchtower Society is a positive thing. Having the gumption to frequent our site, for whatever the PROFESSED reason, is something we should be encouraging about, not attacking. Doesn't mean we can't take a sense of humour in our approach. Gentle ribbing is one thing. Personal attacks are another.

I don't know about popular but it is true that defd in the past month has been the 3rd most prolific poster here. hmmm.... if defd IS an active JW, their service report is fattening up quite nicely.
