  since about 2015, hollywood has congratulated itself and circle-jerked over the 'strong women' characters they've written.

  i'd say this roughly began with rey in the force awakens (2015).

  what hollywood forgets is that strong characters have to have a personality, otherwise audiences don't really relate to them.. well, hollywood should really stop patting themselves on the back as if they've done something special.. strong female characters have been a staple for decades.. here's one: private vasquez, from aliens (1986).

  @redvip - yes, the actress who played Vasquez is called Jenette Goldstein. She is of Jewish heritage.

  There had been some fuss because to play Vasquez, she actually had to 'brown up', put brown skin colouring on.

  In reality she is a fair-skinned Jew with freckles.

  I can see why 'blackface' is wrong but this case case is different.

  But you're right, it wouldn't happen today because of the outrage by people who make it their life's mission to find outrage everywhere.

  Here's one: Private Vasquez, from Aliens (1986). She isn't stunning and brave like today's feminists, and she's too busy working as a space marine to smash the patriarchy, but from pretty much the first time we see her, we can see that she is one strong woman who gives as good as she gets.

  There are, of course, many more strong female characters in film but I thought Vasquez is a pretty good place to start.

  @Diogenesister - I kinda agree with a lot of the points you made - there are people in prison who shouldn't be.

  Prevention is better than cure.

  The trouble is, how can we devise a system that prevents crime without taking away liberties for law-abiding people?

  other than adding 20 lbs over the last 15 months, no known health issues during covid.

  i’ve taken 8 lbs off so far and i am within goals.

  thank goodness nothing serious here over the pandemic.

  I've now had both my jabs (AZ). I did experience flu-like symptoms after my first jab. But I was fine after my second.

  Mulholland Drive (2001) - what do you make of this movie?

  i first saw mulholland drive (2001) about a month ago.

  i bought it second-hand from the local market.. it's kinda weird, it's a david lynch film, lol.

  i've seen half his movie output (5 films out of his total of 10).. in addition to this film, i also own eraserhead (1977), the elephant man (1980) and blue velvet (1986).. plus, i remember watching dune (1984) on tv years ago.. mulholland drive is definitely strange.

  @Phizzy - yeah, giving it another watch is a good idea.

  After I first watched it, I was like 'hang on, what happened here' but after seeing again I kinda sussed it out.

  Lynch isn't my favourite director but I admire him for making the films he wants to make.

  As such, his films have great rewatchability, even if it's just to figure out the plot, lol.

  Plus, yesterday I bought a second-hand dvd of The Straight Story (1999), so I now own 5 of his films and have seen 6, but there's no way I'd buy Dune (1984). Dune's crap, lol.
