  that’s my attitude toward anyone making an assertion.

  i’m sick of people saying such and such is true simply because we are saying it.

  i would think that those here would agree because we all have been jehovah’s witnesses.

  The burden of proof rests squarely on the shoulders of the people making the assertion. That's how science works. It's also fundamental for intelligent debate.

  E.g.

  "Science is sexist" - well, what evidence do you have to support your assertion?

  "Trump is not only a racist, he's also a fascist" - again, show me the evidence, please.

  "The USA is racist" - er, you're not stupid, you get the idea.

  "Jeremy Corbyn hates Jews" - again: evidence, please.

  Yeah, good thread Min- people who make assertions need to provide supporting evidence. Otherwise, they might be talking crap.

  How Much of the WT Teaching Did You Believe?

  some people on this forum have said that they never really believed any aspect of wt teaching, that they couldn't wait to get free of it all.. others seems to have been really gung ho, believing it all until something happened that got you questioning "the truth.".

  i would say my own high water mark was about 50%, which put me squarely on the fence, trying to decide if i should be in or out.. how about you?.

  At one stage I believed most, if not all, of it - especially when I was working to meet the conditions for baptism.

  Things kinda changed when the GB suddenly changed the 1914 teaching in Nov 1995. They had painted themselves into a corner of a room, then just decided to walk out, stepping in all the paint. That same Watchtower also had an article about what to do (or not do) in the event of allegations of child abuse.

  Would you be OK with someone removing "Jesus'" name from the New Testament?

  would it be all-right with you if a translator removes "jesus'" name completely from the new testament and replaces it with a substitute, like "master" throughout?.

  Jesus and his followers were all Jewish and so they had Hebrew names — although they would likely have spoken Aramaic. The “J” sound used to pronounce Jesus’ name does not exist in Hebrew or Aramaic, which is strong evidence that Jesus was called something entirely different by his contemporaries - true, the letter J doesn't exist in Hebrew and Aramaic.

  But Jesus's real name in either Hebrew or Aramaic isn't as different as Joe is from Patrick - that's a false equivalent, I think.

  Jesus is the Latin version of Yeshua. An alternative English equivalent seems to be Joshua.

  You can replace 'Jesus' with 'Yeshua' or the Aramaic equivalent and that would be ok. You can't replace it with Joe or Patrick, tho ...

  Why is Life Expectancy in the USA So Low Compared to Other Countries?

  i was looking at the world health org.

  report and it shows the us ranks 37th in the world (tied with albania) for combined male/female life expectancy.

  the top 5 were japan, switzerland, singapore, israel and spain, all around 83 years.

  are Canadians less stressed than Americans that ultimately affects their health? If so, why? - Canada has much lower population density.

  Amount of people per square km is much lower.

  He pointed out that black people proportionately commit more crime, then wondered out aloud if genetics were involved. That's all.

  And mean IQ varies according to ethnic group (just as mean percentage of fast-twitch muscle fibers, mean bone density, and mean percentage of melanin do). Different ethnic groups split many thousands of years ago and evolved mostly in isolation. Natural selection acts on different organs and body parts. All this may be an uncomfortable fact, but, sorry, it's a fact nonetheless.

  This is an adult discussion. And adult discussions call for people of differing opinions to discuss difficult, sensitive topics.

  the so-called caliph, one of the most evil men in human history, has blown himself up along with three of his young children while being pursued by american special forces.. the ambition of isis was to expand the territory of the caliphate under the leadership of al-baghdadi to whom individual jihadists swear allegiance.

  now isis have nowhere to call home and no leader.

  what a pathetic bunch of losers.. they will of course appoint a new caliph and reprisal attacks will no doubt follow in western capitals by christmas but the more contemptible they appear they less likely it is that young men and women will join their delusional cause.. respect to the elite forces who hunted him down - those on the front line and the many intelligence specialists who made it possible.

  Al-Baghdadi led one of the worst groups of all time, certainly the worst group in current years. He, and all who would take his place or carry out terrorist acts, must be wiped out. End of.

  Obviously, the average life expectancy of 77.8 years takes gun shootings into consideration, plus things that rich countries generally have to deal with, such as deaths from alcohol and obesity from junk food.

  The US has lots of healthy food and drink but because it's a free country, citizens cannot be forced to eat and live healthily.
  

  Cuba may have a slightly higher average life expectancy but Cuban people are all poor and not free. It would be intellectually dishonest to claim otherwise or sweep these other factors under the carpet.

  You get Cuban people defecting to the US; you don't get Americans defecting to Cuba.

  Profiling is bad and lazy policework - no, it's not, not at all.

  Profiling helps catch criminals.

  Here's a quick example ...

  A guy robs a jewellery store. Witnesses describe him as being of medium tall-ish height, medium build and ginger with a thick beard and curly hair.

  So, the Police Dept. profile the suspect. They're looking for a guy who's approx. 5' 8 to 5' 10, medium build, with white, possibly pale skin, and a thick red beard (or heavy red 'shadow' if he's since shaved), and ginger hair. The police wouldn't be looking for black men or black women or Asian men or Asian women in this scenario, right?

  Well, that's profiling, chum.

  The cop deals with the person he's speaking to in a very polite, proper way. He seems to be a decent guy - if I was a Yank, I'd be happy there are cops like him keeping me and my family safe.

  Generally speaking, yes, I support the police.

  That have to keep law and order ... and pursue and detain violent, selfish criminals. They also have to deal extremely awkward people/situations.

  In short, their job is very difficult on a regular basis.

  The UK has a particular problem with policing, especially policing and local communities.
  

  A couple of decades ago in 1993, there was a black guy called Stephen Lawrence who was killed by racist thugs. His killers were never properly brought to justice (or it took way too long to bring them to justice - sorry, can't remember), due to police incompetence, difficulty in producing the evidence, and possible and assumed racist bias.

  The aftermath of this was The MacPherson Report (1999), which basically labelled the entire police force as 'institutionally racist.' This is total bullsh*t. There have always been a few bad apples in the police, certainly, but the whole Met police cannot be condemned as 'racist'. In fact, it's a form of bigotry to do such a thing.

  The MacPherson Report has had considerable ramifications. Stop and Search (called 'stop and frisk' in the US) has largely been discontinued since 2010, on the grounds that it is somehow 'racist'. It has been kept for terrorist suspects only but discontinued for gangsters, drug dealers, etc.

  Result: London's levels of violent crime and gun and knife incidences have increased.
