Lifting the Veil on "Islamophobia"
by cofty inthe late christopher hitchens decribed the word islamophobia as "created by fascists, and used by cowards, to manipulate morons.. please take half an hour to read a fascinating conversation between sam harris and ayaan hirsi ali.. ayaan is an apostate from islam.
she fled to the netherlands in '92 to escape an arranged marriage and went on to become a member of the dutch government from 2003-2006.. ayaan is now a fellow with the future of diplomacy project at the belfer center for science and international affairs at the harvard kennedy school... she lives with round-the-clock security.. "some moderate muslims hate meand yes, thats a strong word, but i think what theyve said supports itbecause i make them feel uncomfortable.
the things i talk about put them in a state of dissonance that they cant live with.

Evidence For Life After Death
by Space Madness ini'm not sure if i believe in life after death but i thought of something that has me leaning toward that direction.
unlike other living beings, humans have a consciousness that is separate from our brain.
two prime examples of this are addiction and dieting.

When we die...
by Finallyfree12 indo you beleive our spirit lives on in other dimensions or are we really just dead?
?.

I can't answer the spirit question, but for me the life after death thing is easy really.
Before I was alive I wasn't here, after I won't be either...
Carpe Diem is my motto...
I have much loved dogs, they have more right to any afterlife than I ever would, and sadly I'm pretty sure they don't get anything....

Missing my Mom
by exwhyzee inshe and my dad brought us to the u.s. from ireland in hopes of giving the 4 of us kids a better life with more opportunities.. mom went to school in her village where her mother (my grandmother) was the teacher and the bible was part of the curriculum.
they even used the name jehovah.
her father was a plymouth brethern (think amish or quaker) who was shunned for the rest of his life for marrying my grandmother who wasn't "in the lord"...she belonged to church of ireland.. when the witnesses came to the door after we arrived in the u.s, mom was a shoe-in candidate for their recruitment.

Cofty, that isn't quite true. I spend a lot of my time I a predominately Muslim country, and count many good Muslims as close personal friends.
I personally am athiest, but the mainstream brance of Islam is no more extreme than mainstream christianity.
They are honesty hardworking decent people. Islam at least has obligations to donate to the poor and to support charity. None of the many people I know support calls to Jihad, or to murder infidels...
remember the bible also teaches that women are second class citizens, that non believers should be killed etc etc. the standard excuse for that is thats only the OT, but as an excuse that doesn't really hold water....
There are many things I don't like about religion, but after spending much time with moderate Muslims, I can't see it as any worse than moderate Christianity.

Christmas, Mother's Day etc etc..
by Mikado init's mother's day today, a lovely tradition that probably raises lots of thoughts and emotions in ex jws... i was walking around the local supermarket and remembered my family's next door neighbours, who were very intellectually disabled.. in hindsight they probably weren't able to look after themselves, as they lived in absolute squalor.. they didn't have two coins to rub together, yet they went to the effort to buy my family a card and get them a small gift.. i was newly out, and watched in absolute shame and horror as my mother said, in a very superior manner " we don't celebrate christmas", .
it's something i think of often with shame... i too was that superior... to my shame..

Angry Health Care Rant
by ctrwtf infor those of you who live in truly first world countries (uk, australia, canada, etc etc) you can skip this.
for those of us stuck in the usa, not a first world country at all, please feel free to read on.. i've done my best to be fiscally responsible my whole life.
i bought my first house at age 25. and because of having a little loot to protect and not wanting to end up in some overcrowded emergency room waiting hours to be seen by doogie howser, i purchased health insurance.

So, what happens if you get suddenly very ill? Can you just go to any hospital and dr and expect treatment? As a non US citizen your health care system is baffling... I can go to any hospital, see any dr, and its basicly free.. you pay about 30$ out of pocket for a doctor visit, but along stay in hospital is generally free...
An yet I see people freaking out about socialist medicine. As someone using it its fantastic!
