i sent my birthday document (http://thebentinel.com/jw-birthdays.html) to a poster here that is at the very least a jw-sympathizer, if not a full-blown jw.
the response i got back indicated that my reasoning on it was seriously flawed and essentially any idiot with a passing knowledge of scripture and history can tell that birthdays are not something christians should celebrate.. of course, if you're not a bible-believer or a god-believer, you couldn't care less about pagan origins and all that.
but let's keep this conversation on the 'appropriate for christians' vein.
Hey Ross,
I see you've met the resident apologist. My daughter said a few years back, "hey dad I guess you dont know how old you are, since you never celebrated your birthday" at the time I thought that was sad and very funny.

being a professional baseball player.
i ended up being a professional golfer and teacher, one of the few hats i wear.
as a kid i lived for sports everything else was secondary, i love competition, in competition winning and losing is part of the game, it's a given.
Ha thats funny Golf. As a kid that was the coolest show.

SNG,
I am capabable of respectful discussion with any reasonable person. Jehovah's Witnesses can be reasonable. In my experience, these tend to be fairly rare, but I judge a person by the way they engage in dialog, not by the particulars of what they believe.
You make a good point. Personally its amusing to me the way a Jw apologist will conduct him/herself. An otherwise rational person in there circle of friends can turn ugly in other sitiuations. Kinda reminds me of my mom, when backed down with critical thinking, will lash out at a moments notice. Strange indeed.

Your a bit all over the place. If you wish to debate thats good. If you want to have a swagger that, you have authority, your not going to get anywhere here. Theres many here who know more about your faith than you think.

16 As a result of the zealous and diligent preaching effort of the early Christian organization people in many lands heard the good news and became believers. WT 1971 page 72 para. 16
Watchtower 1953 :
20 After a lapse of many centuries God revived the preaching of the good news in the latter part of the nineteenth century.
So for a couple of thousand years Jehovah really didnt have an organization.
17After the death of the apostles the Christian organization began to deteriorate because of corrupting beliefs brought into it from false religions. WT 1951

but there have always been true Christians (even if they didn't have total clear light about everything) throughout the centuries.
If this was the case why was Russell not from the "true Christian" lineage?

Further my point is, that Russell would not need to start another grass roots organization,(Miller and Seventh day inferences) rather the "true church" as you refer to would not need another beginning. If as you claim Jehovah has always used an organization, you fail to show continuity of the true church as you claim to this present day.
